We will end up seeing how successful (or not) Dubas will be. He has what he wants with control, vision, and organizational buy in (FSG is a perfect partner for his vision). Now we will see what he does. The results are unlikely to be immediate though and more 5-6 years down the line. Mostly due to the ages of the Big 3 and allowance organizationally for them to retire with the Penguins. So the proper rebuild doesn't really start until 2026, but the groundwork will start now.

IMO anybody jumping to conclusions either way are premature. The only thing I'll really guarantee is ideologically, this is an ideal fit for both sides.

Maybe Dubas will become President and GM? I think that was what Sakic was and others are like that in the league.
And yet still drafted Bleackley
Before the draft, he was high-touted as being a character bloke who was captain as an underager (unheard of). I get the premise and totally agree that they did draft him, but he fooled more than the Avs scouting department. I am not sure if he was ever classified as a "swing for the fences" type of pick (those are the Kochetovs'/M55/Joey Hishons' for me), I viewed him as a less talented version of ROR, but the same sort of impact if he had a pro attitude.

I know how he was portrayed and looked at... more of my point is that if you're weighing character of 17-18 year old kids very highly, you're likely to miss more than you hit. Not that character guys are more or less talented... just that most people change drastically from 17 to 25. I'd say most times that is good... sometimes it is bad. This is an area that is sure to change more than almost any other area for a player. At 17/18... you actually have a pretty good idea of how big a player will be, how skilled they are, how they process the game, etc. You have really zero idea how they will progress as people.

That is missing a line he also said... somebody who counteracts my weaknesses. I've worked a long time in various leadership roles and in various industries. IMO one of the best aspects of a leader is knowing their actual weaknesses and hiring people that fill that gap. Dubas' press conference exuded high-end leadership, vision, and intelligence... but results matter we will see in 5-6 years where they stand.

Totally agreed, I think a lot of it comes with being "humbled" when entering the league and knowing that you gotta be a good teammate, but more importantly, a good professional (level of maturity). Or you become confident in your abilities by making the big leagues and that confidence surpasses to the point of arrogance/pride (like you see in DeAngelo, Zadorov, and soon-to-be Byram). I absolutely agree that more players become humble and professional (too much to lose for them) when growing from 18 to 25 than becoming arrogant. Avs scouts were just way too cautious.

I'd agree and I think the Avs get way too tied into how players interview in the process and reputations.

I'm curious to watch how Byram grows and develops.... he's got that Doughty ego without the Doughty talent. Does it check up and mellow as he ages, or does his ego leave him a bit enigmatic.

He'll get sent packing again and it will be someone else's fault it didn't work.
Proclamations like this on day 1 don't make sense to me, but the second part... he has not said a bad word about Toronto nor put blame on anybody else.

Just had his lickspittle in The Athletic and all his Stans do it for him. "Shannahan was making all the trades".

Sounds like the plan (foolishly IMO) continues to be win now for the Pens so I don't like that part of it for Dubas. Then again, I guess they have no other choice after their last few offseasons. Much tougher to pivot now after all of these vets are locked in. Good for him getting the President title and full control but it could be some rough years unless he's exceptionally good around the margins.

It was very likely dictated that the Big 3 are not to be touched. Given that was part of the disconnect with Hextall too... that is coming from FSG, not Dubas. He's taking the job knowing that is a part of it, and if FSG is smart, they'll hold evaluations for a while after they can start a full rebuild. Which they will likely start in 2026. Malkin retires, Letang LTIReires... and Crosby is done or only has a year or two left. From that point forward it is really a blank slate.

He usually does when he reads anything about "Statwhackers" and gets triggered.
Been calling it for a while
