I agree, but if you think they're never going to perform in the playoffs, cut bail and trade them all for massive hauls. Realistically, this is about as good (on paper) of a core as one can expect in Toronto. Any players acquired in the next 2 drafts are probably at best 4+ years from being an impact player and that is a best case scenario which with how late we're drafting probably happens 10% of the time AT BEST (when our core will be nearing mid 30s)

The next 2-4 years are in all honestly and likelihood the best and last chance for them
Probably right. But the fact is that the two with the least drop-off are signed and sealed (NMCs). The best thing might be to cut bait on the only one we can, who is also the one with the worst drop.

The more I think about it, the more I can convince myself Brayden Schenn is a good idea, not because I wouldn't have long term concerns, I would and I do.

But look at the east as a whole, and Washington aside, I think the east is weaker then It's been in a decade if not more.

Tampa is not the same

Florida is not the same

Boston is certainly not the same

The Rangers are not the same.

Carolina is not the same.

I think there is a legitimate argument to made that the Leafs are the 2nd best team in the east.

because they are where they are in the standings and they haven't been anywhere close to healthy, at one point they had 7 forwards out of the lineup they were STILL winning.

If there was ever a time to strike and make a big move it's now.

Let's say you got Brayden Schenn you could run.

Knies Matthews Marner

McMann/Domi-Tavares Nylander

McMann/Domi Schenn-Jarnkork.

I know people don't like Marner and Matthews togethe for some reason that does not and never has made any senser but let's be honest at some point they will be put back together.

It doesn't need to be Schenn, it could be Schenn, but it could also be Brock Nelson, ROR, Yanni Groude I don't really care.

The point is adding a quality 3rd line center makes this team legitimately 3 lines deep and with the Eastern Conference being weaker then It's been for close to a decade if not more, a team that is 3 lines deep will be tough for anybody to handle.

In fact I'd go knock on the Rangers door about Reilly Smith too.

Because if you can find a way to add that quality 3rd line center and a guy like Reilly Smith then you are nearly 4 lines deep, especially if you can hold out Jarnkrok until the playoffs.

This is the time to strike

For me another C is a must and Schenn would be an excellent addition. I’d have Matthews, Nylander and Marner on seperate lines though.

Perhaps a 3rd line LW as well.

Knies Matthews Domi
McMann Tavares Marner/Nylander
New guy Schenn Marner/Nylander

Marner has shown he can play with anyone so Nylander gets whoever suits him best, probably Schenn.

The players are extremely talented, for us to get players of their talent level again will be very hard. The Oilers had 3 1st overalls (RNH, Nail, Hall) that are worse than Nylander, never mind Marner or Matthews.

Ultimately you just have to hope this group figures it out, not super likely, but the talent is there, this is arguably the most talented Leafs team since the last cup. Not the hardest working or most likeable, but most talented for sure.

If the cost is close I would be looking at Brock Nelson rather than Schenn. He is not as far removed from his productive seasons and Schenn's remaining term isn't a positive if he isn't significantly better than this year. Paying extra to add a player with term vs adding a 33 year with term is inviting two different outcomes.
