They'd better save some of the budget for a dedicated golf cart driver.
I think Brunette is a good coach. Calgary should have hired him.

Weekes is annoying af
Said that from the beginning with the lame video announcements but was basically told here to f*** off, that he's funny and original and not boring like the other insiders.

Ok then.

We'll see. I think he's a very good assistant coach, not sure he's a great head coach. He largely just continued Q's system as the interim HC in Florida, and was unable to make adjustments in the postseason--and the adjustments he DID make were IMO mostly bad.

I also have no earthly idea what the expectations are in Nashville. They have an aging roster, a couple legit stars, and a franchise goalie. They have some very young players on their way in who could be really good so the retool might be fast, but again, I really don't know what Trotz's plan is.

Calgary needs a guy who can get immediate results. The roster is too old and contract situation too screwed up to take a risk on a guy like Bruno. If you're going to keep the group together, you need a guy who will get results in the first year or two... your Gallant/Boudreau type. If you're going down the path of rebuilding, you're basically giving up on all the UFAs coming back... at that point, you have one of the biggest names in house for developing in Mitch Love.

IMO Gallant makes the most sense for Calgary. At best you get 3 seasons out of him, but more likely you only get 2 or 2+. The first season though, you're getting immediate results and making a playoff run. If the right things fall in place, Calgary could contend in the West. That shot is worth taking and if it happens to fall apart in year 1, you sell anyway and fall back to Love.

I really would like to know what's Gallant's problem with his GM's.

Dude can't stand authority? Does he want to decide who's going to be on the roster? What the hell is happening?

Why would Rangers fire Gallant and then hire Laviolette? I get it that Peter is sort of on the downswing when it comes to coaches, but I think he has a bit more talent than what you lot are saying on here. However, he's more of the same as Gerald was and why I originally started this post with a snarky question.

He has his own ideas on what works and what doesn't and if you take away a player he likes (for example) he doesn't hesitate to let his superiors know about it. The throwdown in Florida was because he got all pissed about losing Gudbranson, which of course IMO is ridiculous but he likes big, physical defensemen.

Wonder what happens to Hynes. I'll admit he was more successful than I thought he would be in Nashville.

I find him to be a bit of an oddity. He's a coach who's supremely good at one thing, and that's constructing a rush offense. He's absolutely brilliant in that regard. But it's almost to the point of ridiculousness because his systems almost seem to favor generating chances off the rush over sustained pressure. A lot of one-and-done scoring chances happen with him at the helm. Seems like that would make him more of a specialist-type coach than anything else, but I'm guessing he gets a HC gig again at some point.

So Laviolette is going for his 6th different HC job and Gallant for his 5th. At least Gallant actually went the assistant route for a bit while getting back to HC. Laviolette just gets fired (or not re-signed) and immediately handed another gig.

Seems like the Leafs decided on Treliving from the jump and didn't really focus anywhere else other than to give off the public perception of really doing their homework.

Shout out to the Caps for going for some new blood and giving someone their first opportunity.

Here’s how the leafs work:

Decide on a path forward with zero conviction
Leak story to public
Gauge public’s reaction
Adjust zero conviction plan if reaction is unfavourable

I've sat in on dozens of group interviews over the years for work and have noticed there is a "type" out there that interviews so dosh darn well, but when given a position, they really don't know much. Some may eventually succeed because they can learn on the job and/or lean into their people skills and become good administrators at least but most suck for a year or two and then move on to something else or even in the rare exception are let go.

I have a feeling Peter Laviolette interviews extremely well versus some other head coaches that might even be stronger.

[edit...Friend of the show, Brett McLean, has been hired as HC for the Iowa Wild. He'd been an assistant in Minnesota I guess for several years. How, did I not realize that before?]

So let me get this straight, the Leafs decided the guy who let Johnny Hockey walk for nothing and gave Florida one of the best players they've ever had for expiring contracts of older and crappier players was the best guy they could find to deal with the Matthews/Marner/Nylander contract nightmares that Dubas created.

That organization is cursed to the be the laughing stock of the NHL.

And apparently Shanahan wants Keefe to stay too, is Treliving going to have any control to do any moves even?

Do old boys clubs egos ruin the NHL?

If Keefe stays, he'll have a very short leash. The only 'big' name out there that would fit with Toronto is Gallant. Sutter is done, Babcock for obvious reasons, they might have missed out on Lavi. Which basically leaves Hynes. They might as well hold until the middle of the season to see how they are doing and if guys like Sullivan, Berube, or Bowness shake loose.

Not quite right. The best TML could do while basically telling the candidates they will be GM in name only and must run everything through Shannahan first, who is known to have rejected many things in the past, was Treveling.

Lavi has to complete the Metropolitan Division tour (credit to Jeff Marek) before he is done.

To be fair to Lavi... of the 5 teams he has coached, he took 3 of them to the Cup finals and he's made the playoffs with each team. In the seasons that he has finished, he has made the playoffs 13 out of 18 seasons. The only team he missed multiple times with was Carolina where he missed 3 seasons out of 4 (the one season was their Cup year).

He wouldn't be my top choice by any stretch, but I do understand the appeal of his record.

Gotta get all the news out by the end of Friday or face Gary's wrath!

I'd have spent that pick for Grubbe in a heartbeat. I don't think there is much offense there despite him showing some in junior. But as a PK and bottom 6 center, I think he has a future and he's going to be a coach's favorite with how he plays.

What would've been your move, considering the owners would not allow a tear down rebuild to occur?
