New GMs always make mistakes... we area experiencing that right now. Dubas made his fair share. I'd say Tavares is partially on Shannahan... he wanted him at all costs. The worst deal he made was Mrazek though.Still he assembled a good team despite his mistakes and the meddling of others. His next stint as a GM will be better than this one. Even as troubled as this one was, he still lead Toronto to the most success they've had since the lockout.

IMO Dubas is far from perfect, but I'm going to be interested in what he accomplishes elsewhere. Also interested in how the GM coming into Toronto deals with their messy contract situations.

If Roy comes back to the NHL, do y'all really think it'll be behind the bench? I always figured if he came back, it would be as GM since his biggest hang up was not having final say to build the team the way he wants.

I wonder how much, if at all, would Roy and Dubas see eye to eye. I would love to be a fly on the wall whenever Patrick Roy talks/argues over players with a GM.

by god that's Francois Beauchemin's music! UNRETIREMENT INBOUNDDDD

Actually thinking more about it, it's hard to believe Shanny actually told the core 4 they are staying in Toronto, can't imagine many new GMs would want to take the job knowing they can't move those guys

I think he’s going to coach first. He feels like he has unfinished business. He will want some control though and that’ll be tough for a lot of places… New York, maybe not.

Adds to the challenge, but Malkin, Crosby, and Rust could all be gone by the summer of 25. Letang with be a legit LTIRetired. Rackell is really the only contract that could be a hold over in 2 years. The rest could be elsewhere and you have a near blank slate to deal with. That just doesn't happen often outside expansion.

I think it is a great job, if you have that backing. If you don't, then you wait 2-3 years for reality to set in and then go for that job.
I think it’ll take another year of shit before ownership finally buys into a rebuild. They’re still under the delusion that the current core can get it done.

Are they really going to keep the core 4 in Toronto and try to run it again?
The problem is you can't trade Matthews because the fans would riot (plus he says he wants to stay now), you can't trade Marner because he's from the area and could be the most talented out of all of them, you can't trade Tavares because not even Arizona would want that contract, and you can't trade Nylander because he was legitimately their best player in the playoffs that got them to the second round in almost two decades. Obviously, you trade Nylander above all, but maybe there is some sneaky wagers by the next GM to get rid of Marner due to his contract running out at the same time and that Matthews will demand the bank. Marner would get one hell of a defenceman though.

What's ironic is that Roy had plenty of control with the Avs, probably the most of any coach had since the lockout. He just wanted to be a GM here too.

Bednar and Sakic/CMac have a great relationship and I'd bet Bednar has more say than the majority of coaches in the league.

It was when his control was fading and the team was making decisions against his thoughts that he left.

IMO it is fairly clear Bednar doesn’t have that power. He’s stated a number of things over the seasons that point to him not having a ton of roster control.

Why is Dubas a hot commodity? The Leafs are a good team sure. But as an outsider it doesn't seem like he's done an amazing job. Not saying he's terrible but it seems like a very average body of work.

Some stuff that worked out well. Some stuff that didn't. He's managed to keep improving the on ice team despite being in cap difficulties for most of his tenure. But the cap situation was the bed he made.

Tangs is gonna make a great head coach one day, but I think it might be a season or two too soon. If he's hired this year, he might flame out within a year or two before being great in a 2nd run.

Bruno would be a great hire, but it sounds like he's taking over for Ruff upon any struggle or the end of next season, and New Jersey doesn't want to let anybody interview him for a job this year (he's under contract for next season, so they don't have to let anyone interview him).
I want Tangs to lose his first coach's challenge. A blatant offside but Tangs will be incensed because his player was "only" like 2 feet offside.

The Leafs were better when Burke and Wilson had Kessel lthe charge

GM of the leafs is one of the most difficult jobs in this entire industry. Not a fanbase that’s going to sit quietly while their team sucks for 15 years allowing a proper bottoming out. Cough cough. Dubas is pretty solid at drafting. He would have done much better with our picks than we did (Bleakley, Jost, Kaut, Newhook, Byram to name a few). He’s not the best gm in the league but I’d say his failure in Toronto is more based on unrealistic timelines , fanbase expectations, and meddling of management above him.

It's probably the toughest TBH.

IMO Dubas is 10X better than he was when he started. Experience is a huge factor for NHL GM's. He's made many mistakes that he won't make anymore.

I used to hate him, now I'd hire him in a heartbeat.

Look at the other potential GM candidates.

Dubas did a decent job. He made some mistakes and got better as he became more experienced. He's not perfect, but i'd rather roll the dice with Dubas than a dinosaur like Bergevin.

Dubas was a good GM. I don't think he was elite, but I think he was quite good. Most teams would kill to have the regular season success that he did, and he started his tenure having to clean up some of the God-awful mess that Lou left (and it was costly).

He'll get a new gig somewhere and I'm curious to see how he does.

Lol Flames never change. I know we had several player-coach conflicts last year so hear me out fellas. Let’s bring in one of the most abrasive old school coaches out there in Gallant.
