12.5 million for Drai and 15 million for McDavid are huge team friendly discounts.

And even that adds 7 million to the Oilers cap.

Then you have Bouchard who will be a pylon in his own end but putting up 80 points and will need a big raise too.

This makes zero sense to me. It's still the NHL. The East and West aren't vastly different from each other, other than maybe the travel. It's not like it's old college football where you had the Big 8 and Big 10 where 80% of everyone was option/run-heavy based teams, and the ACC/SEC/Pac 10 where most everyone was predominantly finesse passing-based teams.

Why are the Minnesota Wild loosing so bad each game? Can't Kaprizov save them or something.
Their goaltending sucks is the main reason they are where they are... but they aren't getting blown out much worse than the Avs. The Wild have 4 3 or more goal losses, the Avs have 3. If you look deeper though, 2 of 4 for Minny were via EN. Minny is losing close games where their goalies are giving up a softy (or 3) a game.

If Minny was getting just average goaltending they are likely 7-4-2 or 8-4-1.

You know what? I think the 2024 Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers are going to be just fine.
We're all going to look very silly when McDavid is lifting the Cup in June 2024 with coach Gerard Gallant smiling behind him with Jordan Binnington and Petr Mrazek fighting to be first to get the Cup after Drai and Nurse, having each won 8 games in the playoffs.

We are all happy to see the Oilers struggle but I'm OK with them to start winning games. I DO NOT want them to get a top-10 pick in the next draft let alone a top-5 pick.

The Oilers will improve and regress to the mean at some point. If that doesn’t start happening soon though they’ll likely finish outside the playoffs

Also the Canucks will almost certainly make the playoffs but they will also regress to the mean soon to be more where they should be - an average playoff team and not a top of the league contender

The biggest advantage for the Oilers is that the West is looking like a conference where 92 points has a good shot at getting you into a Wild Card spot. There is an outside chance of even 90. Which basically means they need to get 87 points in 70 games, or a .621 P%. That's not really a world beating pace at a 102 point full season pace. Especially for a team that has performed better than that for the past 3 seasons. 90 points for the rest of the season most certainly get them in and that is only a .642 P%.

They can't flounder for 3-4 more weeks where they are, but if they start playing .500 hockey for the rest of the month then play .640 hockey to finish the season... they should make the playoffs.

Oh I still do they will make the playoffs. But any talk of them being a contender should've ended by now. There's no way they can remedy their goaltending and d-corps to that end.

Ehhh... I'd pump the brakes there a bit. We are still early. The Blues won a Cup after being horrific to start the season and if you're a pure believer in advanced stats being a primary indicator of team quality, they arguably have the best in the in the league outside goaltending in some areas and in others they are close to the top. They are just shooting at an abysmally low rate and getting shit goaltending more than anything else. Just as an example... the are already 21 goals below their expected differential. No other team is above 16, most teams are within 6 or 7. Things are just wildly off. If that reverts to a more normal level, there will be a drastic turnaround and a stretch they win 13 of 15.

If they get willing to mortgage the future and sell off 2 or 3 first round picks and their top prospects... they could reasonably get a good starting goalie and a middle pairing defensemen to shore things up. It is a pretty large if that they get that desperate, but if there was a time to do exactly that, they are at it. I do think they absolutely need to make a goalie change, and not for a guy like Mrazek or Binnington... they should be working on Gibson, Saros, or Ullmark. If it costs them the next two firsts + Broberg + Bourgault... so be it.

I certainly wouldn't peg them as a favorite or close right now. But a couple tweaks, regression to the mean, and the proven ability they have to score in the playoffs, I wouldn't count them out quite yet.

I just don't get what Ken Holland's end game is here. Why stockpile all of these draft picks and prospects if they're not going to help the team right now yet he wasn't willing to draft Jesper Wallstedt?

Such a weird GM. Never been a fan of his. I think he's been overrated his entire career and he rode the backs of Yzerman/Lidstrom then Datsyuk/Zetterberg to his "success."

Broberg, Bourgault, 2024 1st, 2025 1st, Lavoie, Holloway, Petrov, Niemelainen, Savoie, hell even 2026 1st should all be on the table. Throw Stuart Skinner in there, too, if you're targeting a goalie and have to give one up since nobody will take Campbell.

I said it before but that team is such a fantasy "what if" scenario for a GM and two GMs in a row have managed to f*** this team up inexplicably.

I'd be giving Nashville whatever they want for Saros like, now.

Yea the Oilers can absolutely make the playoffs. One of the playoff spot right now is going to the Ducks and all the teams standing between the Ducks and Oilers are pretty much garbage.

Not even sure the Canucks will get in...so that could open another spot.

Ultimate dream scenario is if they miss the playoffs by one point after mortgaging their future in trades to get back into it

And the funny part is, both those GMs had Cup rings prior to getting the job.

I lost any faith that Holland knew what he was doing the moment he looked at the Oilers roster, sad goalie situation and all, and concluded that the thing that team needed was a broken-down Duncan Keith.

Mind you, I replay the final moment of Keith's career, too slow to cover Arturri Lehkonen on the eventual series-winning goal, so for that I'll be forever grateful to Mr. Kenny Holland.

I’ve watched this like fifteen times and still can’t figure out how the hell the puck got through.

Looked like it was rolling and he went to stop it with his stick, but instead it ramped up his stick and jumped over his skate, between where the pad stops, and the skate blade pushes against the post.

Feel bad for him at this point. Misplayed it with the stick, but how often do you see a guy one time a rolling puck on the backhand, and it rolls toward the goalie like that? That was in slow mo too, so it rolled a lot quicker than that.

Let alone it happening after he was sent down and his confidence is in the gutter. Kind of crazy odds of both happening at the same time.
