I don't fault anyone, if they have Q. Hughes over Cale Makar this season in their Norris ballot. But to suggest that Makar is not in the top-3 is pretty dumb from Button. Cale is having a down year by the eye test, but the stats speak for themselves.
I mean tbf this is by far his worst season defensively statistically and by the eye test.

This speaks more to how much better he is than every other defenseman on the planet, tbh.

A down year and he's in contention / being debated to win it. Crazy.
Correct. He’s still been very good, but he’s set the bar so insanely high that being the 3rd/4th best dman in the league over a season seems off lol.

I don't think they place enough value on defense with the Norris, and Cale has had a down year in that department, but that still feels like a contrarian take from Button.

IMO you should be top 3 in both points and pts/gm among D men to win the Norris. Especially in this day and age where offense from defenseman has become so key to winning.

Cale's 2nd in points, and 1st in pts/gm. Josi and Hedman are 3rd and 5th in points, and 5th and 6th in pts/gm.

Cale's also 2nd in goals (one behind Josi) and 1st in goals/gm.

I don't know if Cale win the Norris this year, it should depend on how Hughes has played defensively, and I haven't watched him enough.

But Hedman and Josi don't deserve to be ranked higher than Cale. Cale should be 2nd at worse on everyone's ballet.

There's not that much debate over the current NHL awards categories, but the one you constantly hear from fans and some analysts/reporters is that there should be a separate trophy for the best defensive defenceman in the NHL.

The Hart is also kinda flawed, usually goes to the Art Ross winner. I mean I wish MacKinnon to win the trophy, he's due, and he is currently leading the charge of our team. But if you actually go by the definition of the trophy, Kucherov is more valuable to Tampa than Nate is for Colorado this season. Kucherov has almost 50 points more than the next guy (Point) in Tampa. Nate has 30. Rantanen is still a 100 point guy, despite how bad he's looking eye test wise, and Cale Makar is still in the Norris hunt, despite him having the downyear as well. Kucherov has been Tampa this season, and they are actually getting hot at the right time.

NHL award voters are sports writers and therefore, by definition, idiots. The non-statistical awards are always given out due to Reputation and narratives and Quinneas Hughes - rightly or wrongly - sewed up this year's after ~20 games or so when Vancouver weren't as middling as expected. I have no idea how good he's been this year. He's been largely anonymous against us. But based on the stats and the unhinged postings of Canucks fans on here he's clearly having the best year of his career so far, so I'm sure in a crowded field he's certainly more deserving than not.

The problem is how neatly everything comes in. Fox won his (shouldn't have), Makar won his so now it's Quinneas Hughes' turn. Then they can all pat themselves on the back and say look at this golden era of NHL defensemen we're in that we've now validated. That's literally it. The fact that Makar has been middling defensively and not matching the eye test while matching Hughes' scoring is moot. He'd need about a 20 point lead on Hughes to actually be seriously considered for it. I'd enjoy the historical aspect of Makar, rightfully, winning every Norris for the next fifteen years but even the concept of he (or anyone) winning it even for just two straight years is always going to be a struggle because of the people voting on it.

Damn near every day for the last 2 months, you've see a story about how shitty the Nike/Fanatics branded uniforms for MLB have been. Now this one where they haven't even gotten some uniforms to teams, even though the season started a week ago.

I cringe at the though of how horrible the NHL uniforms will be next year.

Yup. This is why I just grabbed a road Makar adidas jersey. I have no plans to buy anymore. I will say my son’s Fantatic Mack jersey is fine but I was willing to risk that one ha.

I can see that argument, but personally I think there should still be an element of team success for the Hart too, because the best players lift up the rest of the team, and make them winners, which is ultimately the goal.

I like that if you don't make the playoffs, you're essentially eliminated from the Hart. Tampa's in a Wild Card spot where the east seemed to feast on weaker competition this year.

Colorado's still in contention for 1st in the cutthroat West and 1st overall, though both are probably unlikely at this point. They'd be nowhere close to that without Nate this year, and Cale and Mikko being a bit off.

And whether it's diet, practice, off ice conditioning, dedication, selflessness, or just general desire to win at all costs, Nate has made most of the guys on the team better in one way or another.

He's also really stepped up his positive leadership this year in Landy's absence. We've heard he's been rooting guys on from the bench this year, and very welcoming to the new guys like Mitts. Just his on and off ice impact helping Drouin be the player he's capable of this year should win him the Hart IMO.

April 26? Have they already planned the Rangers playoff series without knowing the other team and know they’ll be having a Friday home game in the playoffs? Didn’t think you could wear alternate uniforms in them either unless you opted to wear them for every home game

Hughes has much better defensive numbers than Makar this year. Norris is going there mentally prepare yourselves
