The Hart is also kinda flawed, usually goes to the Art Ross winner. I mean I wish MacKinnon to win the trophy, he's due, and he is currently leading the charge of our team. But if you actually go by the definition of the trophy, Kucherov is more valuable to Tampa than Nate is for Colorado this season. Kucherov has almost 50 points more than the next guy (Point) in Tampa. Nate has 30. Rantanen is still a 100 point guy, despite how bad he's looking eye test wise, and Cale Makar is still in the Norris hunt, despite him having the downyear as well. Kucherov has been Tampa this season, and they are actually getting hot at the right time.
I can see that argument, but personally I think there should still be an element of team success for the Hart too, because the best players lift up the rest of the team, and make them winners, which is ultimately the goal.
I like that if you don't make the playoffs, you're essentially eliminated from the Hart. Tampa's in a Wild Card spot where the east seemed to feast on weaker competition this year.
Colorado's still in contention for 1st in the cutthroat West and 1st overall, though both are probably unlikely at this point. They'd be nowhere close to that without Nate this year, and Cale and Mikko being a bit off.
And whether it's diet, practice, off ice conditioning, dedication, selflessness, or just general desire to win at all costs, Nate has made most of the guys on the team better in one way or another.
He's also really stepped up his positive leadership this year in Landy's absence. We've heard he's been rooting guys on from the bench this year, and very welcoming to the new guys like Mitts. Just his on and off ice impact helping Drouin be the player he's capable of this year should win him the Hart IMO.
