That's pretty bad isn't it?

Where is that from?

Obviously the 2nd tweet is facetious, but still. How the hell did we get to this point?

Also, I like Torts for the most part but I get tired of his shit sometimes. This is one of those times.

And THEN you don't even show up to talk about scratching your newly-minted captain!?!?

This ain't good.

This is why Torts is effective wherever he goes but he doesn't stay long.

Torts' tenures are 7 seasons, 5, 1 and 6 prior to Philly. The average tenure in the NHL is 2.4 years. Only 4 coaches in the NHL will have completed 5 seasons with their teams at the end of the year (Keefe right on that edge). Right now Torts is tied with a bunch of guys (not kidding 9) as the 10th most tenured coach in the league. Say what you will about Torts' style and whatever he's doing here... the doesn't stay long is just factually incorrect. The one blip was the disaster in Vancouver. The rest of the time he's a ~6 season guy, which only Bednar, Sullivan, and Cooper can claim today.

This is certainly very odd, but given the results he's shown and how his 'difficult' treatment of Frost earlier in the year lead to a resurgence and playing time for him (one of the reasons Cooter is getting scratched actually). Torts should be given a lot more leeway than he is. If it blows up, it blows up... let the story go wild then. If not, let the man do what he is clearly very good at.

This is a straight bitch move. Expected more from Torts.
Yup. I think scratching the captain is not a good look, but not unexpected from Torts. It is what it is. I'd just expect him to show up for the media and explain it. It's not like you are scratching a 4th liner or 6th D-man. You're scratching the guy that was just made the captain of the team.

Like the Avs last year, I think it falls on the players. There is a good argument that the lack of push by CMac last year just took the whole wind out of the sails of this team last year. I think that same argument can be applied to New Jersey this year. The team just got no help even though they were screaming for it. That doesn't make it right for those players in New Jersey and they'll have to correct that, but I think it plays into it.

They could probably use a shake up trade too.

Atleast the Avs made the playoffs. I remember the Avs heating up at the end of the season. They did win the division. It was the playoffs where the lack of depth/injuries finally did them in.

My point was beyond the issues and failures of the FO I’m kinda surprised by how they’ve played lately. Good teams usually put up a fight. Have 5 games already in March where they’ve scored 2 or less goals in a game. Playoffs are dead for them but still time to make it a little more respectable.

RIP Chris Simon, probably the toughest bloke I've seen in hockey.

Torts probably overstay his welcome everywhere he goes, but Couturier isn't a player of the future for them. Even if he's captain now, he is still probably considered fodder by Briere in the grand scheme of things further in the future.

It is certainly a failure and the FO has to do something about it. I hate the seasons where it is mailed in regardless of when it happens.

Yeesh two suicides today from ex NHLers.

How difficult would it have been for the Avs to play the LTIR game with RyJo? Gotta think his camp knew there wasn’t many options around the league for playing time and it’s looking pretty clear he has zero interest in the AHL.

Probably insanely difficult. RyJo as a guy who still can play and hasn't won a Cup... no way you accept LTIR when you can still go. But riding the bus in the AHL that random back injury from 5 years ago sure hurts...

This whole thing with RyJo is further proof the Avs don't play the LTIR game like other teams do.

Yeah but he had to know he was getting shopped and what his market looked like. Feels like the Avs could have played hardball and sold him on the idea. Basically be deep playoff depth/injury insurance but head to LTIR vs getting dumped into a situation with zero shot at a cup and likely in the AHL.

He had the injury on deck ready to go. I don’t want him anywhere near the roster so who cares but feels like you could have took that route nowadays without paying to dump him.

You have to have the player sign up to do it. I can think of plenty of reasons why RyJo would want to play for us and not play for Philly. Or rather, not play for Philly or in the AHL.

I don't think it has to do with Philly, it has to do with the AHL. A team like Vegas would make the same threat, but the Avs never even scratched him, let alone threatened to demote him.

Briere is basically admitting they're playing games too.

"He claimed to be injured." "They found something." "He's going to be doing rehab until...we don't know when."

The LTIR requirements are just a joke. All the doctor has to do is "find something" and all the players have something.

Shit not again. These old enforcers really have a tough go post career. They just fought too often and didn't let their brain heal. RIP.

Very sad. I’m someone who misses the gritty more physical NHL but on days like this your reminded why the changes to the league were needed.

Shout out that one year with the Caps where Simon got a 3rd place Hart vote. Almost 30 goals and had a crazy finish to the season.

RIP to him and condolences to his relatives and friends. I'm not young enough to know how Chris Simon was in his earlier career with the Nordiques/Avs and the Caps. All I know is that it ended ugly with the Isles. For me, he's not "one of the toughest guys to ever play the game". He's a guy who has the #4 and #6 longest suspensions in the NHL history (for on ice stuff) from two incredible dirty plays, trying to injure an oponent. And they happened inside a single calendar year.

But once again, makes you wonder about the CTE. Because he did have his share of fights.
