Saw that Wayne Simmonds has announced his retirement. There was a time I wanted that cat on the Avs.

The article said he was signing a one-day contract with Philadelphia to retire a Flyer. I didn't realize that players did that. I just assumed that once they retired any team they played for could honor them how they see fit. Players don't go into the HHOF wearing a jersey after all. Is there some other significance to the one day deals? Do they happen often and I've just never paid attention?

Yeah it’s been done before. Would not be surprised if EJ did something similar this offseason (at least I hope he does).

Happens all the time. If you’re interested in one that the organization handled really well, there’s some good articles and great video out there of Bieksa in the locker room talking to the guys during his one day contract to officially retire as a Canuck. They showed it on SN during a pre-game or intermission once right after it happened

The sudden discourse between Sens and Wings fans this year on here and Reddit has been entertaining for me lol

It doesn't really have any material significance. It's more just a symbolic/sentimental thing to "officially" retire as a member of a certain team.

Huge win for Washington. They leapfrog Detroit for the final WC spot and have a game in hand.

Though I believe out of all the teams fighting they have the worst roster. Nobody seems to want WC2 but if you get Boston in round 1, you might have a shot against those phonies.

If you had said before the season that Washington would have a better chance making the playoffs at this point then NJ you would have got destroyed. NHL is wild.

That is a team that's quit plain and simple. No new coach bump, lethargic play, physical contact avoidance. Pathetic display from those players.

I get they’ve got brutal goaltending all year but good teams tend to overcome adversity in the regular season. Look at the injury issues the Avs faced last season. Didn’t implode until the playoffs.

I think they’ll be fine long term but pretty clear they weren’t ready to contend this season. I had them in the 1-5 range like a lot of people but was obviously premature looking back.

Loss of Ryan Graves really hurt them.

So how the hell did Sean Couturier go from great comeback story/possibly Masterton winner, to captain, to possible healthy scratch/buyout?

Cooter has been horrific the last 15 or so games. He's had his ice time cut a lot in specific games for poor play. With how badly he played against the Bruins, not surprising. They won't buy him out though this year.

I'd argue that when goaltending is THAT bad, it eventually has an effect that works its way into the entire team. Can't play effectively when you're constantly looking over your shoulder wondering if you're going to get a save.

NJ goaltending wasn't just bad, it was the worst in the league all season. Ottawa's team Save% is the only one that's worse and it's only by one point. But I'd argue the Devils goalies were way worse because the Ottawa defense was the very worst in the league by far.

Devils took a step back defensively, but that's to be expected when you let two top-four guys walk and replace them with two 20-year-olds. I still cannot believe Fitzgerald thought he could get away with an unproven prospect and and career backup in the face of a defensive downgrade like that. He should get turfed for that alone. But I also think him thinking getting Timo Meier would make them "harder to play against" is...well...look at the results.

I will say some of this still falls on the players. To let the Rangers injure two of your guys in two games, you get a five minute power play in each game and do NOTHING with it...that's just pathetic.

Like the Avs last year, I think it falls on the players. There is a good argument that the lack of push by CMac last year just took the whole wind out of the sails of this team last year. I think that same argument can be applied to New Jersey this year. The team just got no help even though they were screaming for it. That doesn't make it right for those players in New Jersey and they'll have to correct that, but I think it plays into it.

They could probably use a shake up trade too.

Luke Hughes had to replace Hamilton who got hurt...he didn't walk.

He and Nemec were the de facto replacements for Severson and Graves, THEN Hamilton got hurt and made things worse.

I also haven’t really seen him play a lot this year but apparently Siegenthaler had a really rough year.
