Simon once had a 29 goal season while being the best enforcer in the NHL at the same time.

Him and Probert were two unicorns.

Edit: One thing that few people know is he could speak French very well. First time I heard him speak French it was pretty unexpected.

This whole thing with RyJo is further proof the Avs don't play the LTIR game like other teams do.
I think it shows that other players currently on LTIR can most definitely play right now. It also shows that there is more grey area now than ever before than what needs to be for these LTIRs. Those are much more important than if Avs are like Vegas or Tampa.

They go hand in hand though. There's no grey area with the Avs usage of LTIR.

They could have threatened to demote RJ to get him on LTIR like Philly did but they didn't. They could have utilized LTIR more with Landy last year too, but they didn't.

Landy and Franky are legit this year. Both had very serous injuries and their careers could be over as a result.

Can't the Flyers terminate Ryjo's contract if it is proved he doesn't have an injury and he doesn't want to go down to the AHL? By phrasing it that way maybe Briere is trying to force the NHL to look into it and prove no injury?

I doubt they would do that, imagine how the NHLPA would react?

There's like 15 games left until they buy him out. RyJo has likely played his last game in the NHL.

I don't even see a team giving him a PTO for next camp.

Forcing the NHL to look into it or terminating his contract? Terminating a contract for not reporting to the AHL has been done before IIRC.
Sure, but if the player says he's hurt and the team tries to say "you're healthy and we are treating you as such", I doubt the NHLPA would like that.

I don't think that's what he's doing at all. He's clearly irritated with Johansen, but it doesn't really benefit him at this juncture to try and prove he isn't injured because then there's no LTIR relief, and if he's proven not to be injured, Johansen will then report to Lehigh Valley, no way is he walking away from $8 million-plus.

Also, I don't think he'll be proven to not be injured. There's definitely something there, the only question is Johansen's willingness to play through it. That's the only thing that changed.

If the Flyers terminated, there would be an arbitration case... where RyJo would likely win and in the middle of the season Nashville and Philly would get a surprise cap hit. After years in the NHL you can find an injury on almost any player that is good enough for LTIR, the players just have to be willing to go along with it. He could obviously play through it, and with a contending team, I'm sure he would. Probably even Arizona. But riding the bus in the AHL... not a chance.

Though I'd argue financially it would be better... no escrow.

The trick for Philly is proving he isn't injured so they can buy him out. That I can see being a battle.

I could see the odd PTO offered by some team out there, but I do think there's the very real possibility of him pulling a Joe Colborne and just being done. At least with Colborne, he got concussed and never really recovered, I just think Johansen DGAF anymore.

I don't know....it is just weird the way Briere worded his comments. He is almost admitting the injury is fake. Why do that unless you are trying to get the NHL to look into it? It would be much better for Briere and the team to just say "RyJo has an injury." Period.

I think he knows there's an injury there and that Johansen is just plain refusing to play through it so that he doesn't have to report to the AHL, that would annoy any hockey guy. I don't think there's any underlying intention there, he just doesn't like lazy-asses. Can't blame him there.

Because Briere is former player turned into a young GM, who gets more emotional about stuff like this?

I mean I think is more on the RyJo side of things than the Avs.

Not sure about that. If the Avs threatened to demote RJ, I think he'd probably react the same, and try to go on LTIR instead.

The difference was the Avs didn't take that route, and probably wouldn't have. They've had many opportunities to exploit LTIR, but they haven't. Only the most drastic cases.

It's been said they're exploiting LTIR like other teams do, but there's a clear distinction IMO. Makes for an unfair playing field, but I suppose that's by choice for the Avs, if the league won't tighten up the way it's utilized.

My God, Torts is such a dick. But I love it.

He's honest... to a fault, actually. That's why he gets results. People respect the hell out of it at first. They truly appreciate that they know where they stand with Torts. The issue is he never lets them forget about where exactly they stand with him. That level of honesty and demand from the coach ends up burning a locker-room out quicker than other methods.

This is where Bednar does such a great job. He seems to keep everything between him and the players. He very, very rarely calls players out negatively in public and when he does he's usually throwing the entire team under the bus not just one or two players specifically.
