Toronto's problem wasn't not going all in by adding. Their problem was not trading a high priced player to fix the D core. Probably Nylander or Marner, which seem unlikely now.

If the problem was not going all in, they wouldn't have a chance to win the Cup for many years from now, if they finally fix their D core, which they can't afford by just adding, they need to shed salary with smart trades.

They have plenty of time left on the clock. Especially since Tavares deal comes off the books in a year. They just need to trade for a good two way 1D, to push Rielly down the depth chart.
Not that Dubas is blameless in Torontos failures, but it sounds like part of the reason he left is that Shanahan wouldn’t let him move Marner or Nylander for a Dman and Dubas wanted to. But that was also stuff coming out in the PR slinging after Dubas left so, grain of salt and all.

Yeah, that's certainly possible, but I'm at risk for heart disease with all the salt I'm taking on with that one.

I think they were on the same page with not moving Marner or Nylander, and the PR just tried to pin all the blame on Shannahan after Dubas left. They're both prototypical Dubas players.

The problem with the Tavares signing for Toronto wasn't that they overpaid him. He got fair market value for a high end 1C on the UFA market at the time. The problem was that Tavares was a luxury piece for the Leafs. They already had a young, soon to be elite 1C in Matthews, as well as a future Cup-winning 2C in Kadri, plus two young 1st line wingers. Tavares took up a lot of cap space that prevented them from upgrading other parts of their roster, and he just didn't fill a critical role in their team building architecture.

And it's tough, because it's hard to argue that adding a player like Tavares to your team for free is ever something you should turn down. Tavares was available and he clearly wanted to play there, what GM could say no to that kind of player falling into their lap? But at the same time it really handcuffed them in their quest to build a good defensive corps and solve their goaltending questions. And when they had the opportunity to let one of Nylander or Marner go instead and belatedly fix it, they doubled down on their "core 4" and resigned both to blank check contracts. And again, usually when you have a player as good as Marner or Nylander coming up for a new contract the right play is to keep them at all costs. But having already made the Tavares mistake they couldn't afford to do that.

Exactly. You can't make luxury signings in cap world. It will handcuff you very quickly.

Like I said it was put out there in the PR shit slinging, so very much could be false.

Tavares was an almost PPG centre who was never a good skater. Giving him an above market value, max term deal was... a choice.
I just don't think that was an excessive or unreasonable contract at the time. He was one of the best centers in the game at that point, a true superstar in his prime. Not only that, but it was pretty unprecedented for a player of that caliber to become a UFA at all. The Islanders would have been very happy to offer him the same contract if he had been interested.

As for the term, no agent in the world would have permitted him to sign anything less than a max term deal. Agents aren't stupid, they're as aware of age regression as anybody. Signing a short term deal, regressing at 30, and then having to sign another, smaller contract for the remaining declining years leaves millions of dollars on the table. Top UFAs always get term, because teams that don't offer it aren't making serious offers.

It's hilarious.

At this point you would think he would have his name on stone after all the injuries he has suffered. Poor guy.

They said Stone might not play in this playoffs. No matter who Vegas gets, not having Stone is gonna hurt them badly

WTF are the Leafs doing? Re-acquiring a player they didn’t like enough to retain the first time they traded for him and dealing away multiple picks in order to facilitate double retention???

And here’s the fun part—the pick the Leafs dealt for Lyubushkin the FIRST time hasn’t even been used yet.
