Like Nylander’s last deal… in 2-3 years it’ll look like a steal. Prices are going way up
It's still a gross overpayment, like all of the Toronto deals. Nylander actually was willing to take less, his camp said it multiple times during the summer. He just didn't want to be the only one taking a discount. Then they went ahead and signed Matthews to his dream deal of 13.25x4... And Nylander and his camp obviously said f*** it, we are getting paid as well..

Which is why I'm not THAT worried about Mikko. He'll sign for slightly less than MacKinnon, 12,25 or something like that. Which is pretty fair TBH don't you think?

The interesting part is what are they going to do with Marner.

It is market rate or close to it. A few years into the deal it’ll be less than market rate. We are simply in the next stage of inflation in the salaries now that the McDavid cap has been broken.

Both Rants and Marner are going to get paid.

It's not. During the offseason, we were talking about 8.5-9m dollars for Nylander. Now all of the sudden it's 11.5 just because of his amazing start to the season? No, it's about him establishing his position in the big-4 of that club and getting paid accordingly. It has nothing to do with the outside world, though no doubt some GM could've offered him that in UFA.

Like I said, Marner got paid more than 1.5m more than Rantanen did. They were and still are pretty much comparable players. If Marner will get 13m, I still think Rantanen can get bellow MacKinnon money.

The top UFA wing on the market on the way to a 100 point season after a 40g 85+p season. Pretty much the same thing as Pasta was heading into last season. This is the new market and will be the norm for top end guys.

Do you think 1,5 year of difference will make Mikko get 2m more than Pasta? I don't. Besides, there is an internal cap of MacKinnon right now with the team.

We are talking about ~9m in cap growth over the next two offseasons seasons and teams with plenty to spend.

Internal caps don’t work with UFAs if they want to test things.

Sure, if they want to test things. Then it's up to the Avs to say look, this is what we can do, we can give you the 8th year so the contract will be the same even if the AAV is less etc...

I just don't see Rantanen getting past MacKinnon. And if he does, it won't be with the Avs. You make it very clear this summer, we are getting it done now or not at all. Not going to let it drag into the season.

We can revisit this in the future… we won’t agree here.

Well, remains to be seen then I guess. I sure as hell hope I'm right.

One caveat: if the Avs win the Cup, I'm pretty sure at that point they would give him whatever they want. But in that case I doubt you would complain either :D

If we win the cup this season, it changes all the mathematics for me as that would be two cups with this core. Yes, pay Mikko what it takes and commit fully to going the way of the Penguins (we've got MacK, Mikko, Nuke, Toews along with Rants new one). Be pretty ruthless with everyone else and look for bargains like normal.

But if we don't, I just believe that we will have entirely too much cap wrapped up on the wings to adequately fill the hole at C. In other words, if we don't win before Mikko's next contract kicks in, I don't think it will be possible.

If I'm wrong, someone please show me the light because I don't see a path that doesn't require another GM doing something that isn't in the best interest of their team.

Mikko is not going anywhere regardless if Avs win another cup or not

The Leafs board is right. No one was going to offer Nylander 13.1M X 7 next summer. They should have waited to see what's out there and outbid them with the 8th year. Right now they are bidding against themselves.

That's a bad decision.

Wonder if it's related to Treliving getting burned with Gaudreau.

Damn… kinda insane that Edmonton can be back in a playoff spot after tonight if they win. Everyone wanting to write them off in November and they are back in during the first week January.

(This is a solid jinx post if the lose)
