They’ll still make the playoffs (and probably be dangerous), but they need to be much better.New Jersey is the most disappointing team in the league by a fair margin.

That's really bad
Yeah. IMO Fitzgerald should’ve been fired for thinking Schmid/Vanecek was remotely adequate for a proper contender.New Jersey is the most disappointing team in the league by a fair margin.
It's still a gross overpayment, like all of the Toronto deals. Nylander actually was willing to take less, his camp said it multiple times during the summer. He just didn't want to be the only one taking a discount. Then they went ahead and signed Matthews to his dream deal of 13.25x4... And Nylander and his camp obviously said f*** it, we are getting paid as well..Like Nylander’s last deal… in 2-3 years it’ll look like a steal. Prices are going way up
It is market rate or close to it. A few years into the deal it’ll be less than market rate. We are simply in the next stage of inflation in the salaries now that the McDavid cap has been broken. It's still a gross overpayment, like all of the Toronto deals. Which is why I'm not THAT worried about Mikko. He'll sign for slightly less than MacKinnon, 12,25 or something like that. Which is pretty fair TBH don't you think?
The interesting part is what are they going to do with Marner.
It's not. During the offseason, we were talking about 8.5-9m dollars for Nylander. Now all of the sudden it's 11.5 just because of his amazing start to the season? No, it's about him establishing his position in the big-4 of that club and getting paid accordingly. It has nothing to do with the outside world, though no doubt some GM could've offered him that in UFA.It is market rate or close to it. A few years into the deal it’ll be less than market rate. Both Rants and Marner are going to get paid.
The top UFA wing on the market on the way to a 100 point season after a 40g 85+p season. Pretty much the same thing as Pasta was heading into last season. This is the new market and will be the norm for top end guys. It's not. During the offseason, we were talking about 8.5-9m dollars for Nylander. Like I said, Marner got paid more than 1.5m more than Rantanen did. They were and still are pretty much comparable players. If Marner will get 13m, I still think Rantanen can get bellow MacKinnon money.
Do you think 1,5 year of difference will make Mikko get 2m more than Pasta? I don't. Besides, there is an internal cap of MacKinnon right now with the team. The top UFA wing on the market on the way to a 100 point season after a 40g 85+p season. This is so wrong. There is ZERO goalie interference there. None. Horrible call.
Rants will get more and then Makar will get more than Rantsthere is an internal cap of MacKinnon right now with the team.
We are talking about ~9m in cap growth over the next two offseasons seasons and teams with plenty to spend.Do you think 1,5 year of difference will make Mikko get 2m more than Pasta? I don't. Besides, there is an internal cap of MacKinnon right now with the team.
Sure, if they want to test things. Then it's up to the Avs to say look, this is what we can do, we can give you the 8th year so the contract will be the same even if the AAV is less etc...Internal caps don’t work with UFAs if they want to test things.
We can revisit this in the future… we won’t agree here.Sure, if they want to test things. Then it's up to the Avs to say look, this is what we can do, we can give you the 8th year so the contract will be the same even if the AAV is less etc...
I just don't see Rantanen getting past MacKinnon. And if he does, it won't be with the Avs.
Well, remains to be seen then I guess. I sure as hell hope I'm right. We can revisit this in the future… we won’t agree here.
100% that's part of the equation.Wonder if it's related to Treliving getting burned with Gaudreau.
