I think he'll be good, too, but he's got to learn that contact is coming at all times in the NHL.
All players go through it... he'll be fine. It was a clear situation where icing should have been called and the linesman screwed up, but yeah he shouldn't have been to lackadaisical about it.

People are sleeping on how good he has been though. With his role increasing, he's really making a big impact... it is too small of sample to really know for sure, but if this continues for the rest of the season, he should be in the running for the Calder.

I can see why people like yourself (and Torts) are upset but I'm perfectly fine with that ruling. Especially when it comes to Hathaway, who is quite possibly the dirtiest player in the entire league. He hits to injure at least once per game if not more, taking him off the ice is doing everyone, including Philadelphia, a service.

I know the puck was there but also that's an extremely dangerous spot to be throwing a hit that violent and Hathaway COMPLETELY ignores the puck in favor of laying that hit. That also may have been a bit of a reputation penalty but I don't f***ing care--that guy is dangerous and is going to end someone's career before he's done.
What is Hatheway supposed to do differently there? The whistle didn't blow, so he makes body contact. It's not his fault the linesman messed up. We hear it all the time "you play until the whistle." Hatheway was doing exactly that.

It's not Hatheway's job to ensure Hughes protects himself in that scenario. He and Torts had every right to be pissed at that call. That was 5 and a game because the linesman messed up.

Yeah I don’t blame Hathaway… but if that was Makar that got leveled, this board would would have the tar and feathers out.

Hughes is trying to play the puck. I suppose some awareness could be learned from both this and the hit from Colton a few games ago but he’s going in to do what most defensemen do in that scenario. I also agree that yes, the whistle should have been blown.

But Hathaway could’ve easily gotten the puck, instead he completely ignores it in favor of demolishing Hughes in a very dangerous area. I guess it was technically legal but Again, even taking that guy off for arbitrary reasons benefits everyone on the ice.

With Lehky on LTIR, he would've worked right now. Once Lehky was ready to come back, I would've shipped Dermy and Tatar to Abu Dhabi.
Ok, and? Because that's not enough cap cleared.

The only way Zadorov would've made any sense for us would've been at 50% retained. Calgary wasn't doing that.

I don't disagree about Hatheway the player being stupid and at times quite dirty. However, this hit had 0% dirtiness to it. He's playing his role to the best of his abilities.

The linesman got Luke Hughes hurt last night. Hatheway just happened to be the guy delivering the hit.

It's called 'playing the body'. The NHL is not two-hand-touch hockey. Perfectly legal hit under normal circumstances. Hathaway did nothing wrong.

That was an unfortunate situation, borne of poor officiating.

People can disagree with me all they want but there's certain players who absolutely do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. Legal or not (and I'd say there's still some room for argument that it wasn't), that's a hit that should absolutely be taken out of hockey. And that's regardless of whether Hughes braces himself for the impact.

He absolutely DID do something wrong, but that's my opinion, and obviously the refs thought so too even after review.

With Franky on LTIR, I thought it would, but I guess not. I guess we would have had to pay more for retention.

I honestly think Hathaway should be suspended. I love the physical game as much as the next bloke, but there is no reason to make that hit, especially on a 50/50 icing call and that far away from the boards. Hughes could've potentially missed the rest of the season with a shoulder injury like that. The refs and NHL deemed it wrong when they threw him out of the game, he should've gotten more punishment.

Poke, I love ya. But I do disagree here.

Hathaway may or may not be a dirty punk. But we can’t have the refs making calls based upon the player’s history, rather than the play at hand.

That play was inside the whistle (barely), shoulder to chest more or less, the puck was right there. There was no hit from behind into the boards, etc.

Why does that hit need to taken out of hockey? If the defenseman was prepared for it, it would have likely been a shoulder to shoulder nothingburger.

So has anyone dug into Dom's new player cards for this season? The updates for this season are pretty slick I think. Here's an example of Cale's...

DJ Smith, how long does he have? Should've been done before Woodcroft IMO.

The Devils, how many over at HFAvs were drooling over them? Well, looks like their great forward core isn't good enough to overcome shitty goaltending and defence. Things aren't going to be improved by having Hamilton out (though Nemec is very promising).
