why isn't it a team friendly deal ?

if we're to believe JT was offered 13 plus years ago i'm sure they would have been teams willing to offer Mac (who's a much better player) 15m plus as a ufa

I wouldn't call getting the highest aav in the league as a team friendly deal by any means.

I also wouldn't call JTs contract team friendly either.

Nope. He said he took a discount before and he will do it again. He never at any point said he would take a cheap deal if they don’t win but will cash in if they win

That’s not true at all. You are making it up.

Regardless. You hated the Tavares contract which was less money less AAV with less term when he was also a 2 time hart finalist top 2 scorer.

You ignored that Tavares actually had 13 million dollar offers and assume mack gets 15 with no proof

If a team offered mack 15? Then. Matthews and Marner were on steals and should be more than 15 right?

Be psychotically consistent.
From mack own mouth he said he never meant discount, he took what he was worth and nothing more. Admitted at the time of signing he didn't do anything to deserve more and that it doesn't mean he took a discount.

It was never going to be a Gio/Spezza team friendly deal, hes 27yo. Him and Makar both shaved a milly or more off their price a la Pens/Bruins.

If we win a cup next year and Matty signs an 8 year extension at 12.7M AAV I would consider that a team friendly deal as well - regardless of being the highest paid.

Couple things to take away from that Mac contract.

Mac has played like a $12m player for $6m for how many years now, has gotten them past round #1 how many times and has a SC?? How do you know he did not give a discount given you can see Matty's (who have zero playoff success) next deal starting with a "13"??

Give him $34 more than Mac got if he wants to be the highest played player. Unless he gets us past round #1, IMO he does not deserve to be making much more than Mac.
He was paid like a $6 M player because that is literally all he was when signed. At 27 his only major individual award is a Calder versus at 25 having a Calder, Rocket x 2, Hart and Lindsey.

Alex Galchenyuk lands on a PTO with the Colorado Avalanche. I think Galchenyuk playing on your team would have to be one of the four horsemen of the cap-pocalypse.

You can' just stop half way through his quote. He said he'd take a discount on his next contract to try and win a cup with this group". That's what he said. Cleary, having now already won a cup with this group, the quote doesn't really mean much.

But regardless, Mac did of course take a discount.

If Tavares was offered 13 mil as a ppg player with no playoff success, what do you think a player as good as Mac would get after JUST WINNING A CUP?

And yes, if Matthews wins a cup this year while putting up elite numbers, give him 15 x 8. I'm all for it. See, I understand the difference in leverage between ufa's and rfa's. Unfortunately Dubas doesn't. And that's why (as I predicted) playoff disappointments every year. And Marners deserves nothing near 15x8, btw.

Mack deserves the contract.
Discount or not, he is worth that contract.

Now can the Avs win when his new contract kicks in is another question.

Alex has done everything he can to play out of NHL. This is going to be his career it seems. 1 year contract here, a contract there

Mackinnon said he’d take a discount to help the team get a cup. Well, he and they got one. Don’t really blame him to go after the money now. It’s what everyone else does. ESPECIALLY leaf star players.
I'm a big fan of WIN first and then get paid upon delivery.

MAC is like other previous Cup winners like LA and Chicago and Pens, where they secure the Cup and then get the bag $$$, which them makes their teams less Cup compitive afterwards due to rewarding success in a Salarly Cap World. It the price of success.

You are right. My point was that he outplayed the contact. I believe he could easily have gotten $13+ but simply wanted to become the highest paid player and as such gave the Avs a discount. Here's hoping Matty does the same but I'm not betting on it.

You think 12.6 x 8 is a discount? lol

Same reaction to macks contract as to matthews back then it seems

Mack has a good number moving forward after this season. Avs are looking at one tight off season in which they will either trade girard or toews due to money but as the cap climbs and your players are locked in and the % goes down thats when all the experts start realizing ... oh this was a good number and good value

When he could have easily gotten more, yes. Gonna be interesting to see the usual suspects twisting themselves into pretzels when it comes time to defend Matty's next deal.

It would certainly be nice but I can definitely see why it wouldn't happen based on resume. One has basically already punched his HOF ticket by 25 years old. IMO they should owe some discount due to not dialing back the cap hit amount commensurate with front load. They have been made rich young, which is better than rich old (interest and such) so they could help themselves win the ultimate prize at this point, though I also can't fault them if they take care of themselves, given the accolades.

Could easily have asked for $13+ and walked if Sakic refused. Instead he stayed. His AAV will look great after Matty blows it out of the water.

That's always easier to say/do when all your vets are in place at the start versus having to build around your stars from the ground up.

Tkachuk didnt walk. He did the right thing and told Calgary he wasnt signing there so they arranged a sign and trade.
If he had lied and said he would re-sign then declared free agency, he could have picked the team he wanted plus guaranteed they wouldn't lose anyone in a trade.

Putz.

Nate MacKinnon @ $6.3 mil + Nazem Kadri @ 4.5 mil & ( 71 games 28-59- 87 points) & Darcy Kuemper @ $4.5 mil (57 games 37 wins 2.54 GAA & .921 sv%) = Cup competitive @ $15. 3 mil.

Now

Nate MacKinnon @ $12.6 mil - Kadri - Kuemper & goalie Alexandar Georgiev @ $3.4 mil = Cap Hell @ $16.0 mil
