Start drafting the paperwork for 8 years $12.7 million AAV

please

We may be able to get him at 13 mill. At the very least we are not talking about a major raise. This doubled MacKinnon. We would be paying Matthews 1.5 mill more.

This may keep our Matthews/Marner/Nylander raises under 4 mill combined. That would be a major win since Tavares will hopefully be making a lot less than 7 mill on his next deal.

Really hope Matthews ends up coming in around 14mx8. Obviously less would be better, but would love to get 8 years this time.

Matthews is going to want 8 years. It is not like he would be giving up prime years if he does. It would be cheaper for the Leafs to give up term.

Yeah what makes the Matthews raise easier to handle is it’s a smaller incremental raise. Not saying there wouldn’t be headaches but the big contract signings from low cap AAV to market rate is what kills teams. (Hyman, Campbell). A couple extra million should be fine. It also makes it hard for another contender to carve out $13 million to try and pry him away.

Couple things to take away from that Mac contract.

1) his talk about giving his team a friendly deal a couple seasons ago was obviously BS
2) Matthews will have the highest aav in the league when it's signed. Though it may not end up as a major jump - can see it potentially starting with a 13

I'd run a 1 man roster Matthews 82 mil AAV if the alternative was never seeing him in a Leafs jersey again. Sign me up for blank cheque route.

Mac has played like a $12m player for $6m for how many years now, has gotten them past round #1 how many times and has a SC?? How do you know he did not give a discount given you can see Matty's (who have zero playoff success) next deal starting with a "13"??

Give him $34 more than Mac got if he wants to be the highest played player. Unless he gets us past round #1, IMO he does not deserve to be making much more than Mac.

Leafs should just hand matthews the checkbook. Tell him he's signing for 8yrs and he decides for how much. No negotiations.

I think Matthews also knows that, regardless of where he goes, his cap hit affects his team's ability to build a contender (which I do believe will be a top priority for him). He is going to get paid regardless.

What do you then do with Mitch when he demands a similar deal ?? Love Matty and he deserves to be the highest paid Leaf but you do not give anybody that has zero playoff success a blank cheque.

I mean... you hope that changes by the time contract negotiations occur. Matty's contract doesn't expire for two years, and Marner's for three. If we can't win a round in the next three years, then screw it, some big changes need to happen.

Mac's deal comes into play after next season and the cap remains unknown. I'd be happy to overpay Matty again if he'd sign for 8 years July 1st. Lose in round again and if he refuses, I seriously start shopping him. Perhaps we can a package starting with the #1 pick.

IMO, that's jumping the gun a little. Is it Matty, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly who need to go? Or do you continue to build around the superstar C, and move other pieces? Personally, Matthews is the last guy you move...

I get what you are saying with the eight years or move him... but still, where do you draw the line on an extension? Is seven years ok? Six? I can't see him not signing an eight year contract though...

Honestly i can see another potential 5 year deal leaving him young enough at 32 i think to get another big short term

Matty is no doubt the guy you want to stay but if it looks like he does not want to sign any deal, you can't afford to let him walk like we saw Gaudreau and Ratchuck do this summer.

Absolutely. That being said... it wouldn't shock me if McDavid and Matty want to play together at some point..... here? Maybe? 2026?

Makes no real sense though from Matthews point of view. For example, would a team give Tavares another big contract after this season if he had only signed for 5 years? Another thing to keep in mind is.....what if he (Matthews) sustains a serious injury and his play dips?

He will be paid for 7 or 8 years or he's leaving money on the table.

Well the injury potential is there for everyone regardless of years.. yeah what if

But what does a figure at 5 yrs vs 8 yrs look like.. 13 to 14.5. Lets say thats 65 vs 112.5

With the cap potentially much higher by 2029.. could he get another 5 x 15.. another 75 million.. so 140 million versus what contract will he get at 35?.. another 27 million over 2 years to be equal

Obviously these numbers are just random numbers but i could see the player friendly approach

Would you give Tavares a raise after this season? Because that's a comp.

A 32 year old player will be on the downside, and all teams know it. Teams won't pay for what he did, they will pay for he is currently doing or will do.

Players don't make risky bets where they could leave $40+ million on the table. Especially their agents won't.
