I forget what player on CBJ he talked to, but they talked about the peaceful life outside the rink and that sold him on the idea.

May be biased because I went to college there, but I imagine Columbus is an awesome place to live for a NHL player who doesn't want all of the spot light but passionate sports fans. The city is underrated, not stupidly overcrowded, and you'll never be more popular than the left tackle for OSU. The rest of the state is meh though.

You also can't understate the significance of his wife and her preferences. She is, from what I have understood, a pediatric nurse, and Columbus just so happened to have one of the US' leading children's hospitals. Gaudreau mentioned it himself too, iirc.

Bunch of pull factors in play there.

Chiming in on Gaudreau. You got the highlights. It's a lot of small details that add up. Columbus is closer to south Jersey than Calgary is but not so close the families can just drop in any time they want. It's barely even an hour flight. The Flyers didn't even try to move cap to offer him a contract. He turned down more money in Calgary and possibly also NJ. Wife is a pediatric nurse and Nationwide Childrens here is one of the top children's hospitals in the country (not to mention OSU's medical center is also top notch). Plus his childhood best friend's brother is on the team in Eric Robinson (he and Buddy were each other's best man) and Cam Atkinson is a friend from college. Cam is a HUGE Columbus ambassador and I imagine will be in the front office here as soon as they can legally hire him. The Boston College connection is also the root of the Kevin-Hayes-to-Columbus rumors. Dalton Proust also strongly recommended the city (and Jackets fans still love him very much for the TKO of Lucic back in the day), and Gudbranson had just signed and their wives are besties.

The zoo in Cincinnati is top notch, as good as San Diego IMO. And the chili there is interesting. That’s all I’ve got though.

QOL is not just big cities and “more stuff to do”.

The era of Caps and Pens is over. They can retool a bit to sneak back in next year at best. The writing was on the wall for some time but a bit surreal to realise this.

NJ is already on the rise. I'd expect Sabres and Senators to get back into the playoffs next year, they have some exciting talent. Feels like a generational change is happening as far as franchises go (it happens all the time, but now 2 generational talents are falling out of the playoffs so I guess it gives extra feeling).

Pittsburgh needs to revamp their blueline. Not sure how they will, but it's awfully drab as it stands. It's basically an aging Letang and a handful of Marcus Petterssons.
