Remember when we just had to move Bratt++ for this guy for reasons such as defense and grit? We just look at the gritty defense he plays. Also look at these superb numbers.

I find it hilarious that everyone people have screamed from the hilltops that we needed to move Bratt++ for is always currently worse than Bratt or Bratt surpassed shortly following

I think only one person seriously tried to make the argument for Bratt plus plus for JT Miller, maybe two. Bratt plus for Thachuk was at least a more reasonable debate point but since Thachuk didn't want to come here anyway, it's a moot point

Bratt+ for Tkachuk was always super dumb too. It’s basically a lateral move and you’d have to give up a substantial addition for at best a marginal upgrade. Even without the plus it didn’t make much sense. We’d be solving nothing

What we'd be solving is that Tkachuk would (in theory) be extending with us and Bratt may not.

I think there were only two people going crazy for Miller. He was always going to be a bad deal in both assets and contract and I'm not sure what Vancouver's plan was being so picky.

I know it’s only 5 games but this is Gusev 2020-21 effort here. I didn’t want Miller but I thought he would still have a pulse after getting his big deal.

All we heard about was how this guy is such a cancer in the locker room and they're gonna trade him.

First they were trading him last year, then it was in the offseason, then it was ''It's no rush to trade him'' and then it was ''Maybe at the deadline'' and then he re-signs.

Now, almost all of their problems are from the Benning error, but this is looking like a really big opening strikeout to start things off with the new regime.

They got 8 more years of this guy (including this one that's barely started) that they kept talking about getting rid of.

He's gonna be 37 years old when that contract ends? How many 37 years old are even in the league anymore? It seems like there's fewer and fewer every year. By the time he's 37 there may be hardly any 35 years olds in the league.

Ty Smith didn't even make the Pens roster?

Wow...
Supposedly he was “sent down” to the AHL just for contract and cap purposes and it was just a paper move but now he’s played 3 games down there. He’ll light it up in the A (1 and 2 so far) but as we all know his foot speed and size will hold him back at the next level.

Wow...

I didn’t think he was expected to make that roster this year. It was one of the reasons the Pens traded for him - ELC / waivers exempt. It’s also why I thought the Devils didn’t need to give up a 3rd in the deal.

Basically Pitt dumped the Marino and Matheson contracts and revamped their NHL defense (including resigning Letang). They also brought in a former 1st round pick who they can stash in the AHL and see how he develops.

Smith had to beat out PO Joseph to make the team. The Pens have invested in Joseph and know him. That was always a tall ask for Smith.

This logic doesn't really add up. Ty Smith being ineligible for waivers is nice, and does make him a little more valuable than a player who isn't, but the real value there is his AAV. I do not think they were antcipating PO Joseph beating him out for a spot.

What especially doesn't add up is the notion that because Smith is eligible to go to the minors, he is somehow equal in value to Marino? Marino is getting 20 minutes a game here and playing splendid hockey.

PO Joseph got into 4 NHL games last year and he was healthy all season, that doesn't sound like a player they've invested a lot in.

That said, Pittsburgh is right at the cap with a 22 man roster and Smith makes 35k more than Joseph, that plus Joseph being eligible for waivers and Smith not might've forced their hand.

The whole “too good to be true “ vibe comes up with Marino for me.
He has been very good so far and makes me question why the Pens traded him. I know the reasons were laid out in a prior post but it still seems like it’s not enough for the Pens to move someone as good as Marino has played. Dosnt seem to be a D bag or anything in interviews etc?

It's funny to me how, every offseason, there's at least one contract that makes people go "well it's ok in the short term but it won't age well," and then it's actually immediately terrible. If you're already saying "it'll be a problem in 3-4 years" before the player's even played a game on the new contract, you're basically admitting to yourself they're already declining.

That’s true of almost every UFA deal for a player who signs for big money in his late 20s

Six goals and eleven points in six games, he's definitely outperforming the contract at least lol
