Greer was the most dominant player on Utica in the games I saw and he looked like a guy ready for a real shot in the NHL.

He was also a UFA and he got a 2 year one way deal on team that offered him more opportunity as a winger.

Zetterlund is very similar, 3 year younger, player and the forward core is too crowded for him even after Johnsson was sent down. I don’t see why Greer signs here.

Agree with all, but I don’t know that Greer and Zetterlund are clones. From what I’ve heard / seen, Greer is a spark plug: works very hard, fights, does the dirty work. Zetterlund seems big and physical, but I don’t know if the work ethic is the same. Or the fighting.

Greer also is the kind of player who does well with a veteran squad. I think the story of someone toiling away for years to get their shot doesn’t quite resonate with a young team, most of whom are just getting their own first shot. With the B’s though, someone like Greer probably is a shot in the arm to the vets.

The primary color is Outer Space. If you try to check a player wearing this you're sucked out into the airless void.

Well Zetterlund doesn’t fight guys and then immediately leave the penalty box to fight someone else. (That was some of that borderline psychotic behavior in the AHL that derailed Greer in Colorado.)

Zetterlund certainly appeared to be a very emotional player in Utica. He played physical, definitely got in other teams faces, etc. Probably more of a pest/agitator than a fighter, but those are more useful anyway.

He has a lot of charisma, he seemed very Wood-like in his ability to get the team’s energy up. He has to make the transition to the NHL but he’s not just some finesse player.

And I don’t see how his work ethic is any worse than Greer’s, he’s developed quite nicely at a much younger age.

My point was even if Greer explodes in Boston, he was clearly better off signing with Boston. They’re thinner at wing, have a thinner prospect pool and had guys out due to injuries on top of that.

Greer’s is almost 26, he needs to play right now. He was a UFA and he signed a generous deal with a great organization that offered him the best shot at a NHL job.

Not disagreeing at all. I was just saying there are also reasons why Greer would be desirable elsewhere / that Greer fills a slightly different role than Zetterlund. I don’t think the Devils had any way to keep Greer and I don’t think it made any sense for Greer to stay. I’m happy he’s doing well.
