Bettman: Bruins signee Miller 'not eligible' in NHL
Just one day after the Boston Bruins' controversial signing of prospect Mitchell Miller, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Mitchell is "not eligible at this point" to play in the league.www.espn.com
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Saturday the Boston Bruins did not consult the league before signing Mitchell Miller and that he would "need to see a whole bunch of things" going forward.
"He's not coming into the NHL, he's not eligible at this point to come into the NHL," Bettman said. "I can't tell you that he'll ever be eligible to come into the NHL. If in fact at some point they think they want him to play in the NHL -- and I'm not sure they're anywhere close to that point -- we're going to have to clear him and his eligibility, and it'll be based on all the information that we get firsthand at the time."
Bettman said the Bruins were free to sign Miller to play somewhere else, a reference to the fact that Miller was sent to play for the Bruins' AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. But then he added that, "nobody should think at this point he is or may ever be NHL eligible and the Bruins understand that now."
An NHL Players Association source, however, told ESPN Saturday that the NHL has not informed them about any suspension for Miller or any other action that would impact his eligibility to play in the League. The NHLPA is aware of Bettman's comments and intends to reach out to the NHL because "there needs to be more information provided by the League" on Miller's status.
When asked about Bettman's comments regarding Miller's eligibility, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski that Bettman "wouldn't rule on eligibility without a hearing."
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Miller's contract has been registered with the NHL and that there was nothing official from the league that would have prevented any team from signing him.
Oh no
Oh no
I was fortunate to meet Peter at a game back in the day and he was kind enough to chat with me. Really friendly and at ease with a fan. Hopefully his family had their chance to say their good byes and get some closure. Cancer sucks. This is heartbreaking.
1) In the Avs GDT I commented that I didnt recognize him while watching the Avs RSN-feed between periods-- not realizing he was battling cancer.
2) For those that watched Avs intermissions in our recent game, you know that Peter was ON TOP OF HIS GAME to the end. No kidding-- he knew more about the Devils than any other away broadcast studio analyst. I was blown away by his knowledge.
3) My first years as a Devils fan we're spent in my room as a high-schooler watching Gary Thorne and Peter McNabb calling Devils games on SportsChannel. They were an excellent broadcast team. Now that we know what we know about Doc --- it seems strange to say that I was actually upset when I tuned into the first game of the season and Doc was suddenly doing the broadcasts and that Gary had moved on. A couple years later Peter moved on too.
RIP Peter McNabb.
I would assume some tribute given his ties to the organization. He was a player a commentator here plus his father was the GM and long time exec with the team.I know I didn't hear him in the last couple weeks, but I thought he called a game at some point this year since the season opened? Perhaps I'm remembering wrong. He was definitely still calling games last year at points and I think he was even on the Avalanche radio broadcasts for at least part of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Very bummed to hear, as last I heard his cancer was in remission.
While Chico will always be the franchise color commentator, just as Peter McNab will always be the Avalanche franchise color commentator, he was the Devils color commentator right when the team started to become competitive through the first cup win. He had a pretty good playing career and also played here for a couple of years at the very end of his playing career, but he'll be more remembered with the Devils as the partner of Gary Thorne and eventually Doc up in the booth.
I'm sure we'll do something to recognize him before Tuesday's game. And we better, with all the weird video packages and ''Welcome back's'' we do with former players who will hardly be remembered here.
How many of them can possibly know anything about hockey? 10? 12? The rest are just parroting whatever nonsense they are fed.Unsurprisingly, the Facebook boomers are up in arms about Bettmans decision. These people literally take an L on every f***ing thing.
