I will say Nashville was 2 points behind St. Louis on April 1st as well hardly guaranteeing anything
Pretty sure that was the closest it got, and even that wasn't as close as you're representing, as you're leaving out games played again.
it seems the playoff matchups are among the top reason's you watch games in the regular season when it's like 15-20 for me and not really important at all.
It's not one of the top reasons, but it adds to the fan experience, and it's stupid for a business to set up a system that takes it away for no reason.
nothing about the playoff matchups because it truely doesn't matter you gotta win 16 games doesn't matter the opponent.
Of course playoff matchups matter. It impacts the difficulty and chance of winning those 16 games.
and so yea I much prefer the current playoff setup. it's not broken at all and thats simply your opinion.
It's not an opinion. It's factually a broken system. You're free to like the broken system more if you want, but for the record, you haven't actually said a single thing you like about it. Just dismissed the things that other people don't like about it.
but there have been times where losing under the old conference system where finishing 6th was better then 5th because the third division winner was usually weaker then the 4th place team.
Yeah, the previous system had issues too. Still better than this one. Or we could just have a new system that fixes all of the problems.

I agree with Dekes - from a purely entertainment value point of view, knowing your playoff matchups in October is garbage. Right now it would be much more interesting if we could potentially be playing NYR or TB.
Have the playoff matchups been locked in league wide since October or just the Leafs?

That would be lovely.

After Kane's idiotic comments this weekend, I hope they fail. McDavid puts up a season for the ages, and the team doesn't make the post season. You'd just hate to see it.:naughty:
20 times a player has scored 68 or more goals in a season, and only once (Lemieux' first time) did the team not make the playoffs.

there is a good chance oilers might not even make the playoffs

I don't know what's the most surprising thing out of this graphic:

1. The Oilers fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot despite getting one of the greatest individual seasons of all time.

2. The rebuilding/retooling Kings sitting second in the division. And trading their legendary goalie along the way.

3. The defending Cup champs scratching and clawing their way to make the playoffs, even with the ridiculous amount of injuries they've had this year to some of their top players. Although they seem to be hitting their stride and should be okay, particularly with the games in hand they hold.

4. The Flames winning the division comfortably last year, and looking like they may miss the playoffs entirely this year. Markstrom a testament to the volatility of most goalies year-over-year. Let's see if he can go on a run these last 15 games to lead their push.

Leafs need to stop pretending Gustafsson was anything more than a dump from the caps to allow Sandin to walk into PP1 right off the hop. Send him to the press box and be done with it.

There's really no reason to have a rusty player (in the event they have to utilize him). Play him some of the time, but not all of the time.

Yeah, the previous system had issues too. Still better than this one. Or we could just have a new system that fixes all of the problems.

on April 1st Nashville had played 68 Games and had 82 points, while St Louis had played 67 games with 84 points, On February 1st Nashville's win% was 652 while St. Louis was at 648 are you still going to say St. Louis and Minny were guaranteed to play each other in the first round early in the season? St. Louis on Feb 1st was 3 points behind with 2 extra games in hand so a worst winning% plus the points in the bank for Nashville. this is a complete myth that the central seeds of 2 and 3 were set in stone long before the end of the regular season.

also you can say what you want about something being factual but you haven't given any facts to prove your opinion other then things that are your opinion, you don't like how the 2-3 seed in our division is basically been decided since December but that's actually factually incorrect as factually we haven't even clinched our playoff spot yet. so it's an opinion that currently it's going to be Tampa/Leafs in the first round. second reason you believe it to be bad is you want to see different matchups, well I completely disagree with that sentiment. I have friends who are Ottawa/Boston/Montreal/Buffalo/Detroit. and because of that there's no better games to watch then those because of the banter it creates. so reason number 2 as to why I like this system is it gives you those matchups more it's like Pittsburgh/Flyers/Rangers matchups those are always great games. the current schedule is weighted towards your division you play them more then anyone so why would we be compared to someone like New Jersey who gets an extra game against Columbus and one less game vs Boston? this current schedule is the most fair(Identical) among all the teams your fighting for playoff spots for.

if you go back to the conference system for example with 16 teams per, 32 games vs the other conference leaving 50 games vs Conference teams. with 15 other teams that means 3 games each + 5 games extra vs teams in your conference. what if team A finishes 8th beats Team B by 1 point but Team A played there extra 5 games vs teams 16-11 and Team B had to play there extra games vs teams 1-5? that's totally unfair and would be the definition of a broken system. I've seen some claim 32 teams top 16 make it, well same issue occurs from a scheduling point of view unless you change the number of games played to 93

also from a travel perspective this is much more team friendly/cheaper. which as fans don't matter but if your looking at this objectively it does matter. so why again is the system factually broken? teams play almost identical schedules to those there directly competing with.

as far as playoff matchups your likely going to have to beat the best teams anyways at some point so no it doesn't really matter except series are more fun when playing the teams I mentioned earlier because of the banter. I'd be interested in hearing/reading your idea's of a better way to handle the standings, without completely changing everything. or keeping it relatively plausible
