He is an important player for Edmonton though. A lot of players exercise their no trade clause not to go there and they generally need to pay a big premium to attract FA’s. Keeping decent players like RNH who actually want to play there at a fair cap hit should always be a priority.

Yes. Plus, Draisaitl will turn 26 early in the coming season and McDavid will turn 25 at the midpoint so the time is now for the Oilers to try to contend. It makes sense for them to take the standard pain risk at the end of lengthy UFA contracts to get the upfront benefit.

Why would Seattle want a cheap veteran everyone agrees is a top culture carrier and leader? On an expansion team? Kinda feel like that question answers itself. Very much in the same vein as Thorburn and Bellemare being picked by Vegas.
Dude what, Simmonds is an old slow replacement level 4th liner.
Available for free basically always.

That's who you're picking for you franchise start?

Players that played lesser minutes on better teams will play more minutes on worse teams.

That's like calling Tyler Myers a #1 defenseman because he's the Canucks even strength ice-time leader.

Replacing RNH with a cheaper player allows you to build depth behind him.

Zucker, I guarantee you, is the odd man out on a cap-strapped Penguins team this summer. Burke does not like small forwards.

if your team has depth, you only need minute munchers at the highest level, but if you do not have depth, finding someone to chew through lots of them at a higher than bottom six performance level becomes important. the oilers are among the thinnest teams in the league. they do not have the cap room, trade assets or marketability to remedy that fast, so they need minute munchers and they cannot afford to go backwards with connor hitting his prime.

there is no way zucker, or donskoi or kerfoot are playing 21 minutes of tough match up hockey a night and not being blown apart. it's not a realistic discussion to have. those guys perform as they do in controlled match ups in controlled minutes. you cannot project them to do the same in the kind of wide open deployment that rnh sees.

You act as if RNH is Edmonton's shutdown center. He's not - he's a supporting winger with the ability to slide over if injuries hit. The fast majority of his mintues are played with McDavid + Draisaitl.

You gotta think they'd rather take a guy like Dermott over Simmonds, no? They'd be silly not to, IMO.

i act as if he is a good defensive player who can play centre or anchor a line whenever they need one.

his time with eichel is poorly documented i think.

Really curious what Alex Wennberg will get in the off-season. If cheap enough I'd be interested in adding him as an offensive 3rd line centre. Assuming we don't get a chance at drafting McTavish.

Solid deal for Edmonton - RNH. Not without some risks but he's a homegrown player from Oilers' perspective. Can we extend Boeser using RNH as a comparable?

I am truly jealous of the way Tampa Bay has been run. Great scouting in getting guys past the first round or undrafted free agents in Kucherov, Palat, Johnson, Point, Cirelli and Gourde. Also trading dissappointing first round picks while they still had value in Drouin, Connelly, and Koekoek for Sergachev, two 2nds, and a useful bottom pairing D in Jan Rutta. I also loved how they adapted after the playoff sweep to Columbus. They didn't panic and move anyone other than Miller for cap reasons. They added Maroon, Coleman, Goodrow etc. So that they could win against the skilled teams and the physical, defensive, trap teams.

The Tampa Bay area is blessed with the buccs and Lightning managements. Very smart move leading to 2 excellent teams. I wish the city of vancouver could be given managements like that.

This RNH discussion is so refreshing. I can actually see why 2 people would have a different opinion about it and can understand both sides. Holy hell it’s refreshing to read.

MAF wins the Vezina. And to think we could've got him, along with a 2nd round pick at 50% retained and avoided Holtby. Sigh.

Where are you getting this? Only thing I heard is that Vegas' owner didn't want MAF traded.

This was reported multiple times by multiple sources last offseason. Surprised you didn’t see it. Not the most reputable source but am on my phone atm

Marc-Andre Fleury surprised he didn't get traded, but will it work in Vegas
I don't think the timeline would've worked out though.

Originally, it was widely reported that Vegas didn't want to retain any salary on Fleury and were looking to pay a 3rd team to do the retention for them, which obviously they couldn't find. If Vegas did end up changing their minds and would've retained themselves, it most likely would've been much later and after Holtby was already signed.

Turns out the flames tabled up two Norris candidates (one winner) and Ferland to get Hanifin and Lindholm. Elite mediocrity unlocked.
