Thinking on it, Why is this such a bad trade? ELI5. Seems like a nothingburger. Bad contract for do nothing assets really.
Jones will lead to Jones.

They also got a 3rd.

Got rid of $5M in cap for a severely declining player in a flat cap world.

Time for Chicago to ravage a few teams.

Id put money on them being better than Van next year if Toews and Dach are back healthy.

I will reserve my pointing and laughing at Edmonton until we see what Benning does and how he tops Holland

You said it yourself. They took on a contract few or no teams would sign as it stands now, and gave up assets for it.
True. I guess i just dont view those assets as anything and that contract isn't the worse seeing as it ends in two years anyways. It hampers them, but i dont see it as some worst move evar thing that most do.
Basically worse moves could have been done and this isn't even close to that bottom.

They have already told their base they are rebuilding and Toews is also a worthless asset and bad player. Dach is good but not 1 man carry good. I mean i wouldn't be surprised if we are worse than a rebuilding team, but i doubt it seeing as mission mediocrity is in full swing here.

No retention and the Oilers give up a pick????
That’s brutal. They have so many holes to fill and waste $5.5 cap for the next two years on Keith. Like others said though I’ll wait to see if Benning can top it.

But we have Benning! He will save us. :help:

Big picture it's a nothing trade like you say. It doesn't have the catastrophic consequences that Benning trading for OEL would bring.

But conventional wisdom says that the hawks dumping an aging player on a bad contract should have cost them.

The expectation was that to get out from Keith they would have had to retain or they would be the ones giving up the picks.

I think that's where the reaction is coming from.

No one said these things. They said it was a shitty and confusing trade, which it is, and not one of the worst ever. And the relative value of a 3rd round pick or anything else isn't relevant to whether flushing it down the toilet is a good idea.

Pretty much.

Does Keith have any gas left in the tank? His contract isn't catastrophic but you would have thought it would be a negative-value asset.

Duncan Keith's defensive stats have not been good 3 of the last 4 years. His production has dropped too, with only 9 ES points last year. Signing their best defensive Dman in Larsson, then using the remaining cap to improve their forward depth with good covid deals would of been much wiser.

That's what I'm thinking. Feels like people are judging this based on last off season's sudden Covid cap crunch leaving a lot of teams in trouble and salary an extra critical trade value. While the cap is still static having a full year to prepare for it now and with fans/$$$ back in the building I think things will ease off a bit more where you don't get to trade for a guy like Nate Schmidt at the cost of a single 3rd round pick.

I mean I don't think it's a particularly good trade, but I'd give this one the wait and see approach and think people are really over reacting.

Larsson would be a good target if he shakes loose.

I think what's surprised people is that no salary was retained. Keith is still a useful player but not at his current salary. Also you'd think Chicago would be willing to convert some cap space into futures.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
Does Ken Holland have dementia? Like is this a serious deal?
Once more Jim Benning moves up in the GM rankings without doing a thing.

Couldn't have happened to a better team (Oilers).:thumbu:

I still think Jim Rutherford trading for NoGoodBranSuck a few years back was worse. Another person that apparently has dementia.

seeing the tampa bay celebration is making me so sad. Why does this stupid team have to perpetually aim low now a days.

Seriously you have the senators who did so much stupid shit last summer and now you add mcguire like this should be an automatic call to them to try and dump the bad contract guys that they may see value in
