I don't think Tampa is going to have any issue getting value for some of their back-to-back cup winning players with salary that they need to trade, especially considering they are actually good (instead of being like Keith, who is a complete liability).

All it takes in one or two teams who think that Palat, Killorn, Gourde, Johnson, etc can improve their team (and for 95% of teams those players would) for them to get value. There isn't a 30/31 team cabal going "ha ha! we shall not help out this team we are very smart!", teams are self interested and will make whatever deal they think will improve their club.

They were over the barrel before and still got a great return for JT Miller. They'll do it again.

The Keith trade could impact what Vancouver does with its defense this season. There are two players that fit our needs on RHD.

• Will Adam Larsson now test free agency?
• Will Nikita Zadorov be re-signed by Chicago or traded? He likely isn’t being protected ahead of the draft.

There absolutely is, its why Chia had to pay Hall for Larsson after spending a year on trying to obtain a defenceman, the best deal he could come up with is Larsson.

Chiarelli only got Larson because he didn’t aggressively market that Hall was available and specifically wanted Adam Larson.

I don't know what their defense situation was like prior to the trade, but now they have Keith they have to protect him in the expansion draft.

(If they valued him enough to trade for him, they'll definitely protect him, NMC notwithstanding. But if they had another 3 defenders worth protecting the timing of the trade would be funny.)

No it was clearly a massive conspiracy amongst general managers that the Oilers have to pay more in trades because of McDavid. Not anything to do with a bad GM not doing due diligence and exploring the market.

The fact that bowman was able to get value for Keith without salary coming back astounds me. Holland basically did Chicago a favor.

I wish Benning was more like bowman and has the ability to convince other teams their washed up players have value but instead, he's more like Holland getting fleeced for most of his trades.

How is the trade even possible? Keith is still NHL caliber but clearly declining and could be useless by next season, carrying a 5.5M cap hit until 2023. Oilers are hard up against the cap with all their huge core contracts and need flexibility badly, yet they tie it up in a guy that almost certainly won't play close to his cap hit value? Meanwhile Hawks get to have wiggle room for UFAs competing for room in a flat cap world full of bloated pre-COVID contracts - possibly the best time in the cap era for a GM to be in an open market with room to spend.

Oh yeah, and the expansion draft is coming up - Hawks rid themselves of an asset to protect and the Oilers have to waste it on a 37-years old. The hell?

It's mind-bending the Oilers gave up assets without having the Hawks retaining anything.

Nah, he also wanted PK Subban. Bergevin asked for Hall + 4 for Subban + 9 to take Dubois, Chiarelli wanted Sergachev. Not sure if the Oilers killed the deal once they knew they'd get Puljujarvi or if Bergevin was offered Weber/only wanted Dubois and killed it based on that.

Also, the NHL is an insanely stupid league, and although on paper this is essentially the dumbest transaction since the Hall trade, there's like a 5% chance that having HHOFer Duncan Keith barking at refs actually gets the Oilers calls in the playoffs and as a result McDavid can score points and win games without dealing with bat shit clutching and grabbing.

You said it yourself. They took on a contract few or no teams would sign as it stands now, and gave up assets for it.
