That is sort of a blow to a really talented kid. I hope he is capable proving everyone wrong yet again and becoming another legendary player for the Habitant. I hope he becomes the one bright spot for them for the next decade or so.

"Caufield led Wisconsin with 36 points in 36 games this season, and his 19 goals were tied with Alex Newhook of Boston College for the most among NCAA Division I freshmen. Caufield, who became the first player from Wisconsin to win the Big Ten scoring title with 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 24 conference games, is a finalist for Big Ten Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year."

He'll be fine and continue to develop. The kid is a gamer.

His line mates/team mates/draft mates all have signed pro contracts and have left him behind. He will very likely be fine but he has been left behind and that has to be sort of a blow. He has proven everyone wrong every step of the way so I bet he continues to do so.

Am I missing something or why is it a bad thing he is going back for a year. Especially with all the uncertainty of everything else in the world.

I'm assuming same reasons I would think Turcotte going back is bad in this case--less to do with the player and more to do with the program. It's a young team and the coaching/leadership appeared rudderless paired with the rumors about players 'only worried about their stats' or whatever. Not a terrific development environment.

Maybe less for Caufield because it's clear he was made "The guy" there from day one and allowed to do whatever the f*** he wanted, sort of like DL's criticism of Michigan, recruiting a bunch of stars then letting them run amok instead of 'developing' (Opinion). I mean do we think any single one of those Wisco kids is more ready for the NHL now than at this point last year? Maybe marginally. If it's one kid that's his problem, but literally every one of them has the same issue, from Caufield to Turcotte to Miller and more.

Bummer to hear about The Hockey News. They had already been on thin ice in recent years since selling magazines is a tough business model especially now with viable competitors like The Athletic. Even though I disagreed with their rankings more or more with each passing year, I always looked forward to the Future Watch (which just came out and might be the last issue ever?) and Draft Preview issues. Those are ones I had been buying since the late 90s, some guys on the main board were collecting even further back.

On an unrelated note, my dynasty league would use THN's Draft list as the default in case somebody no showed. This was a bit of a deterrent since we all quietly knew how bad their list usually was. In 2011, my old college roommate was in town and we were out til like 4am. I set my alarm for the 9am draft time, but I hit snooze and missed my pick (15th overall). Eventually I snapped awake and immediately thought "OH NO, ZACK PHILLIPS." THN curiously had Phillips ranked #9 that year when most of us thought he was a late 1st rounder at best. Sure enough I got defaulted Phillips and had to pretend I had remotely wanted him; I managed to trade him a couple years later when he still had "former first rounder" value. [/coolstorybro]

It also probably didn't help that they were all buddies from the development program as well. Easy to get distracted by the NHL and to look too far ahead when you're with all your friends. It seemed like as the season was winding down at least Turcotte sort of got it. Caulfield will be fine. Have him become the leader of the team and then he'll be ready for at the least the AHL by the end of next season.

Yeah, I remember reading that he was their main target. I wonder if the Kings end up signing any college free agents at all, I imagine they have to be picky due to the contract limit.

That and they have so many prospects in the pipeline now. I imagine had there still been an AHL season, they may have looked into signing guys to minor league deals.

Other than that, I would guess that they’ll be looking at signing a couple of their own collegiate prospects, like Tyler Madden and Cole Hults.

I was bummed waking up this morning to see Calgary had picked up both of those defensive prospects but I then remembered that I don't have the Corona (yet) and instantly felt better about myself.
