Here we go Kings fans, on your mark, get set, never mind we are paying all of our salary cap to guys over 30-years old.

LeBrun Notebook: Will this star-studded RFA class finally...

Unless you’re a hockey fan living under a rock, you know that Sebastian Aho, Brayden Point, Patrik Laine, Mikko Rantanen, Mitch Marner, Matthew Tkachuk, Kyle Connor, Timo Meier, Brock Boeser, Zach Werenski, Ivan Provorov and Charlie McAvoy are all coming out of their entry-level contracts this summer.

Not likely that even a few of these guys will actually be on the move. Honestly, I don't think Marner will get an offer sheet for a contract he would sign. If he doesn't get an offer sheet, the Leafs will have much of the leverage in the contract negotiations with him, and they should force the issue to resolution to their advantage.

I could see someone offer sheeting Meier, honestly. But none of the others, they can all match with no problems. Leafs and SJ though have at least the (empty, maybe) threat of having their feet held to the fire because of cap concerns. I love Marner punching Dubas in the dick here simply because he can and should use his leverage over what is looking like a bad piece of GMing (overpaying Zaitsev, Marleau, arguably Nylander, Tavares, tying all their money up in forwards all before even getting out of the first round). But I agree that ultimately he'll probably just settle for 9-9.5 like Mark Stone and predictably Leafs fans will chest thump as if Dubas knew what he was doing all along and was never sweating.

I don't think Dubas was responsible for the Marleau signing. His hands were tied on Marleau since he had to deal with the NMC.

Dubas did give ridiculous contracts to Nylander, Tavares and Matthews, which is going to lead to ridiculous demands from Marner and his agent.

If Marner does sign an offer sheet with four 1st round picks as the compensation, Dubas would be wise to take the picks and walk away. It would sting, but he would then be able to hang onto his other RFA forwards.

Not sure how he gets Zaitsev moved out of there, but surrendering Marner for the picks allows him to fix the defense, maybe.

If Marner doesn't get an offer sheet, time for some hardball.

I honestly don't think he takes anything less than $10 million and that might be on the low end. I believe he is going to visit with 3-4 other teams this week. Should be interesting anyhow.

If Marner doesn't sign an offer sheet, or isn't at least offered one, he is going to lose his leverage in his contract negotiations with Toronto.

I find this game of chicken between Marner's agent and Dubas fascinating.

Dubas came away looking like a whipping boy in the Nylander deal. He caved on term and money and lost the player for half the year spiking his cap hit last year making it harder for Toronto to add rentals for a run. If you were going to make a player wait Dubas needed to at least win the money or cap hit battles. Lost both and sends a statement to other RFAs.

Agreed on this point. At some point he has to stop making the same mistake. He can't afford to do otherwise.

If Marner is offer sheeted, I don’t think TO takes compensation in any scenario.

If it’s a $10.5m+, then I think it’s match and trade. They need a player, most likely two, to try and replace him. They’re in win now mode, futures does nothing for them.

Best of luck. One of my all time favorite players.

And of course, that hits the Canucks where it hurts: (and they deserve it, after pulling the rug on him in the Schneider trade)

The Canucks’ biggest concern might be
Roberto

" I don’t profess to know Luongo’s final decision, but outright retirement — instead of going on the long-term injury list — is a legit possibility. Should that happen, they are looking at a cap recapture penalty of approximately $3 million per year for the next three years, with Florida at just over $1 million a year

Vancouver is such a shit show hahaha. 1st round pick for JT Miller too. They have to make the playoffs this year so they don't lose the 1st in 2020 and now they've got $3MM of dead cap for three years.

Wait...Vancouver fans are actually happy because this could limit Benning from doing something haha. What a life.

Recapture would have been a lot worse if he retired after this year. Also the Canucks were already on the hook for his retention and that goes away, so the actual luongo cap hit to them is less than $3M

I like this for the flyers. I like Elliott over Talbot especially on a one year deal like that.

and he's well liked, a real team player. Didn't quite get why Talbot was added , didn't add one thing. Hopefully Elliott can stay healthy, which has been an issue and also, the Flyers recognize he's a backup and don't overuse him.

Luongo gives up over $3m in cash. A) That's when you know you've done well in life, and B) you have to respect a guy actually retiring in that situation. He lives in Florida, he wouldn't have to go anywhere to fail the yearly physicals, but he just says I'm done.

Pretty sure the 1st in 2020 is lottery protected. It moves to 2021 if they fail to make the playoffs this year.
