It might be complicated, but I feel the cap should be based on player salaries after state or province taxes. So, a $5M post-tax salary in FL or MTL or CA would be the same cap hit. (The actual salaries would be different, but the post-tax hit are the same.) This would eliminate the inequity among the teams with no state income taxes and ones with high ones.
...or these states could lower their ridiculously high tax rates. This is one of the consequences of living in a particular state. High taxes effect the ability to compete of every business in that state. The cap is the cap, I don't think the NHL is going to make it any more complicated, and I don't blame them.

Return on Duchene trade will help shape Avalanche’s defense for years

This article citing the moves the Avs made, Turris and Duchene, reshaping their defense for years. The return:

  • Samuel Girard, at the time a 19-year-old defender and a top prospect in the Predators’ organization
  • Shane Bowers, the Ottawa Senators’ first-round pick (No. 28 overall) in the 2017 NHL draft
  • Vladislav Kamenev, at the time a 20-year-old forward and No. 42 overall pick from 2014
  • Goalie Andrew Hammond
  • Two draft picks that turned out to be Ottawa’s first-round pick (No. 4 overall) in 2019 and Ottawa’s third-round pick in 2019

No. 4 overall 2019 is Byram. The 3rd round pick Center Matt Stienberg

add Cale Maker who was their own pick, to Girard and Byram, and that's young top d, that's pretty good

Turns out Sakic did a little constructive destruction with the Duchene deal. Good for him.

Fair deal for both sides. Sanheim is on the rise and 2 years from now in a better position for a payday.

Flyers now have 18 M in CAP space with 6 skaters to sign and at least 1 (Fletcher said maybe 2) goalies. Provorov and Konecky are the 2 top contracts from the list.

I may be in the minority but I think the Kings prospect D still needs upgrading. I know elite talent is hard to come by but I feel FO needs to work up a trade to acquire a highly skilled A grade defender.

There doesn't appear to be a Top 2 guy in the bunch.

I just don't think they will have the assets to do so until another off-season has passed after this one.

States will get their money from you no matter what - either via income tax or property tax. But I don’t want to get into a political discussion - I’d rather get back to hockey.

I agree, the NHL won’t do anything in this area - but I still feel they should. You don’t, and that fine. Next topic.

What is the deal with Hartman. Sure gets bounced around a lot

money. He wanted more than they were offering. Fletcher has him on the 4th line and that's not how he sees his path forward i guess. I like Hartman and wish him well in Dallas. But Fletcher needs money and wanted to gets something back that was cost effective. Hartman is good player , would be a solid middle 6 forward for Dallas.
Pitlick is 4th line fodder for the year, if he even makes the team.

Bowman the bandit. I get that the Canes need money, but De Haan is a good defenseman (who chose to come there) who was good for them (outstanding in the playoffs) and will be missed. The return was poor , I can't believe they couldn't have gotten a draft pick a better prospect if clearing CAP space was the goal.
I guess it means that maybe they will be keeping Faulk. And needed space for Bean.
But still, great pickup for the Hawks.

I’ve been a fan of CDH for awhile. His game is simple but effective. Good guy to have on the pk unit.

I’m assuming Forsberg will be the new backup in Carolina unless Nedeljkovic beats him out. I know Carolina is high on the kid. I think he’s got a chance to be a solid NHL goaltender.

Forsling just turned 23. He’s serviceable but, it’s likely he doesn’t turn out to be more than a bottom pair guy.

I’d guess the Canes’ qualify both guys.

I don't think you know this but in order to raise taxes in California, you need a 2/3 majority from voters

Not if they have 2/3 majority in state government which they have now ....didn’t you notice the extra gas taxes we pay....... no states taxes put everyone else at a disadvantage

and it seems like CA is okay with that increase.
but most of the increases are thru ballots both statewide and local. May I remind you that Measure EE was voted down. that needed 2/3 majority.

If the Flames sign Talbot, that's another example of why it's tough for the Kings to trade Quick, even if they wanted to.

Not to me, Calgary does not have the cap space for Quick.

Also I imagine what has hurt the market for Quick more than anything is Quick's play. Why trade for Quick when you can sign Varlamov for likely less money and term.

That's what I mean. Between cap hit, term, age, play, and/or assets traded, it's easier to just sign a guy and hope he has a good year than to invest any or all of the above in Quick. Even if Quick was good last year, I would bet it's still tough to trade him.

I'm not surprised, I haven't thought Quick was going anywhere since his trade value started being talked about.

Because the Flames are okay signing a 1B goalie for the 12th year in a row, haha.

Some people never learn.

They're just trying to balance the cap. They already have one bad contract. They have to give Rittich some sort of raise. Bennett will likely get at least a little more. Tkachuk might break the bank a bit. At least $6m, if not more.

If the Flames aren't as good as their record indicates, we've seen where Quick takes an average team. They can always trade for Quick during the season if things change, but it doesn't seem like the Flames are the only team not knocking the Kings off their feet with an offer.
