They do have to move some of them out, they have 7 contracts expired and 7.7M. EVen if you do get that 7M back for Zaitev and Nylander trade, and Marner gets 11M, that leaves 3.2 to sign 6 players. Nobody is taking Marleau without a contract coming back.

And having 3 forwards eating up 41% of your CAP, is lunacy. And it weakens your team, and the depth at all positions, esp defense and center, that you need to go deep.

The minute they traded for Tavares, their fate was sealed.
The pieces that Dubas would have to move out would create holes that Marner cannot fill.

You are assuming they HAVE to sign those 7 players, they don't, they need 3 of them back.....Marner, Johnsson, and Kapanen......the other 4, Gardiner, Ennis, Hainsey, and Marincin, can walk and be replaced internally.

The price to take on Marleau's contract for a season is going up. Blake's patience may be paying off. The Kings may want to send a contract the other way, but it is not a necessity.

I wouldn't settle for less than a 1st and a good prospect now to take Marleau. In return the Kings can send a 7th round pick. The extra year and the NMC on Marleau's contract were ill-advised. Why did Toronto think they needed him in the first place is an equally good question.

I feel like AEG doesn't want to spend the money for a 2nd round pick that Marleau's buy out would require.

That's why I think the price of taking him has to go up to a 1st round pick and a prospect. Toronto is in a box here. The Kings are probably one of the only teams to which he would accept a trade. It's nice posturing by the Toronto GM saying Marleau may stay put, but Toronto needs to move him. Time to take advantage.

You may be right about AEG and a budget. When it comes to deals like this, they should spend the money, and find some savings somewhere else like maybe combining the President and GM jobs.

I think he'll accept it anywhere under the premise that he is immediately bought out. He will only play for SJ or Toronto.

Forget about the 1st. Marleau's contract is for 1 year. Solve some problems in LA with a known commodity attached to Marleau's contract. Take on Kadri, Kapanen or Johnsson to get it done.

Honestly, I think Toronto keeps those 3 guys, lets Marner get offer sheeted, takes the 4 first round picks, and drive on.

Hyman-Matthews-Kap
Nylander - JT - Bracco
Moore - Kadri - Johnsson
xxx - Gauthier - Brown

Reilly - ???
Muzzin - Dermott

Lol. If they keep one of the two current office-holders, I assume you would prefer Blake?

I think what you suggest would be a smart move by Toronto, but if they take the draft picks in compensation for Marner, I think they hold onto Kapanen.

That makes Blake "Red Rover".

That's new info to me. I thought he would be willing to play in LA for one season, well at least until the trade deadline.

Why would San Jose want Marleau back?

He gets bought out so he still gets paid. Takes a minimum or even smaller salary to go to SJ.

Former pro and good writer verbalizing the issue better than I did earlier:

I don't know, he's looking at it from a team/league/opposing team view, ie, omg Tampa just saved this much by doing that, how dare they......

And not at the competitive player angle that completely devastates them after news like that.....

If Tampa, or ANY TEAM does something like that to a player, that's not on the up and up....you would hear that player scream from the rafters and then some, almost reminds me of Joffrey Lupul and the Toronto Maple Leafs.....

EDIT: I was curious about the Lupul situation and found this, "In September 2017, the Leafs declared Lupul had failed his physicals at training camp before the 2017–18 season. Lupul then made several posts on his Instagramaccount saying he was healthy and accused the Maple Leafs of cheating by designating him injured so his salary could not count against the salary cap.[21] These accusations prompted the NHL to administer a second physical by an independent doctor, which he subsequently failed and confirmed the Maple Leafs' initial claim he was unfit to play.[22]"

So like I said....players will absolutely scream if it's not true etc.

Got it. I guess veteran depth at league minimum--if he signed for that--isn't a bad thing to have? Better than playing Haley in the WCF.
Yeah, I wasn't understanding your angle there, which makes a lot of sense. Marleau as you said could accept a trade to any team as long as they agreed to buy him out. Then, he could return to San Jose on a minimum contract.

Yep. I know it is fun to shit on San Jose because we hate them but their players love playing there. Listening to a podcast with John Scott on it this week, he was saying that Thornton still texts him all the time to see how he is doing and Scott only played there for one season. You generally see everyone re-sign there. Marleau took his money grab and is all sad now and wants to come back.

They are still losers until proven otherwise, just saying their guys love playing there and it doens't turn in to easy beach living like it has with the Kings far too often.

Exactly.

To steal one of your sayings, "It's not a video game".

These are real life people, and to think these players would just be ok with this is beyond ridiculous. But fans like to make conspiracy theories and/or get angry that teams are getting free of cap space. They did it with Richards, Horton and Hossa too.

To be fair, Hossa thinks harder about gutting it out if his contract didn't dive down so far at the end.

...but I saw Stamkos on the grassy knoll.
