As much fun as it is sitting in 30th place, im really glad not to be a blue jacket fan. there is no way they are winning the cup this year and if they don't trade Panarin and/or Bobrovsky they are really hurting their future. To top it off, if they try to salvage this trade and re-sign Duchene, they lose another first, further hurting their future. Duchene is not worth that IMO, not really even close.
I don't agree with this sentiment. I guess after the Kings won two Cups this decade, I'm not overly concerned about winning it all. There's a value to watching a talented team play in the playoffs. I mean, what's better than playoff hockey?

If the Jackets lose in the second round with Panarin and Bob, then lose them in free agency, then they still had a go at it. As a spectator and fan I would have been happy and entertained. If they go all the way and still lose Panarin and Bob, then as a spectator and fan I would be even happier. Heck of a lot better than not being in the hunt at all.

I'm having a hard time getting motivated to watch Kings hockey these days because they have nothing to play for and because they are boring as hell to watch. How is that better?

Tough spot for CBJ. All in for this year is fine...but what a void for next year.

YEah it is a tough spot. Panarin and Bob will be Panthers next year. So trading them gets you pennies on the dollar for a rental. THeir best option is trying to make a solid push. THey wanted Duchene badly last year, tried hard to get him from the Avs. Now they got him. But unless Bob's playoff woes turn around, it won't help.
A wouldn't call next year and beyond a void. THey will have to adjust, it happens to teams that lose a star.

I was king of thinking the same thing. Deals like this get GM's fired if they don't make a deep run because they most likely will see Panarin, Duchene and Bob walk.
Being GM of a team for six years and then having to blow up your team because you couldn't win a single round in the playoffs also gets GMs fired.

The only way Kekalainen gets to keep his job at this point is if the Blue Jackets go deep in the playoffs, right? Might as well go for it.

It's nice to know that two former Kings are making Pen's fans miserable.

Pittsburgh only has .67M in cap space next year with a 16 man roster.

They're talking about giving up a 1st for a team to take Pearson and JJ off their hands. As crazy as it sounds, I'd probably do it.

If they do it for a bunch of no names prospects and low picks, the league should void it.

I could see the Islanders being players for the pair.

Metro feels a bit weaker this year. Washington/Pittsburgh are close to capped out and the Islanders are in a peculiar spot about how much they should be adding at the deadline despite leading the division. But if Columbus were to land on the other side of the bracket, that'd be a mine field with Tampa/Boston/Toronto.

Not the year not have a top 5 pick when you have to rebuild. The Avs are going to get a really good player with the Sens pick, plus their own in the draft. It would be a miracle if the Sens found a way to get a 1st for Duchene on Monday.

Well, looks like they were able to pull it off. My god is Duchene over rated.

I totally get what you mean as far as enjoying playoff hockey and how dreadful watching the kings are right now. However, the Blue Jackets are 1 point out of the last wildcard spot, its one thing to add pieces when you are at the top or middle of the pack but they are at the bottom (Actually not even IN the playoffs right now) of the pack. I don't think losing first round picks, or prospects like Thomas, JAD, Clague etc... are worth it to see 4-8 playoff games. Those types of moves have a disastrous impact on the future of the team.

Now... if they go all in and Win, or even go all in and have an amazing ride to the finals or even make a hell of a series out of the conference finals, then I can see how it might be worth it for a little taste of glory for the fans, and watching the young players grow but that is a really risky move.

OK, that is not a fair way to sum up the position the Blue Jackets are in. They are 33-23-3 and have 2 games in hand on everyone above them, while having the most ROW in the division. You say they are one point out of the last wildcard spot, but fail to mention that they are 2 points out of 3rd in their division and 5 points out of 2nd(again, with 2 games in hand). They very much are a playoff team and are now a potential contender. The franchise needs a series win, I think this is the correct move for them.

That's the double-sided coin of being a bad GM. He can walk and find employment elsewhere while the team he leaves in his wake is screwed for years.

One playoff series win and I bet all is forgiven even if Duchesne, Panarin and Bobrovsky run away from Columbus July 1, 2019. Baby steps. Hahaha.

...and a 1st round date with the defending champs. This is a long shot.

The Blue Jackets have more ROW and are just behind the Caps in pts%. I'm sure they recognized the potential for a 1st round date with the Caps, which is why they went out and picked up a top 20 center. The franchise has 5 total playoff wins in nearly 2 decades, they need a series win badly.

...at what cost?

I would be pretty pissed right now if I was McConnell.

1. how dare you disagree with my post in front of everyone.
2. you made good points.

Then he's not very bright.

I guess that is up for interpretation. The BJ's were up 2-0 on the Caps last season and have now added Duchene, so they have a real good shot at taking that round. Further, let's say they don't make this trade and end up losing Panarin/Bob in the offseason, when is the next time they will have a chance to do major damage ion the playoffs? If I was him, I would have no problem trading a 1st for an opportunity to give the fanbase a real shot at a good playoff run.

I think it's short-sighted. I would have moved Panarin and Bobrovsky out of there earlier in the season.

It’s too bad Martinez is injured. I bet we could have received two second-round picks for him.
