Imagine Vegas gets at least a phone meeting. I assume Shero is at least trying to worm his way in there.

I actually think location might have killed us with him. My guess is if he leaves Long Island he wants to get out of the area.
kudos to him for respecting the fans and getting out of the metro (if he does). i'd rather he goes full traitor and join us here though :sarcasm:

No state income tax, that’s the only reason I can think of.
Dallas area is so overrated. I went there the last two summers for an event and that city/area is soooooo boring. Nothing to do. Houston area is a million times better since it is near the water.

The whole "states with no income tax" benefit is virtually a myth. Texas has one of the highest property taxes in the country.

Sure it's great to net all of your income, but get ready to pay a boatload on taxes every year on that multi-million dollar mansion you have.

Ugh... Houston. I never knew it was physically possible to have over 100% humidity till I went there.

These interviews really don't mean anything. He is under no obligation to sign with any of them. He very well could, but you guys are acting like a signing with one of them is imminent. He's going to get a call from every team in the league. We have a week until he puts pen to paper, a lot can happen.

The bottom line is that the cost of living in Texas is nothing compared to the New York metropolitan area. For example, a McMansion in Frisco, which is where a lot of the Cowboys live, will cost maybe half of what the same thing will cost in one of the better suburbs of Northern Jersey or Long Island. The extra property tax amounts to maybe a couple of hundred thousand dollars whereas New York or New Jersey state income tax will cost him probably $1 million extra a year.

I get the impression JTs sense of loyalty to the Islanders is the reason he isn’t fielding offers from divisional rivals.

I think it might be one of those situations where he knows leaving is the right move for his career but he doesn’t want to screw over the Islanders or turn their entire fanbase against him, which is exacty what would happen if he ended up a Devil/Ranger/Flyer.

My guess is he’ll end up in a smaller western market, both San Jose & Dallas make perfect sense, as do Vegas and Nashville to some degree. He can play in relative obscurity on a competitive team and the Islanders fans will eventually come to terms with it.

I think he’ll be a Shark on July 1st, seems like a great fit to me.

Imagine that transition for the Sharks and their fans. Out goes Joe Thornton, in comes John Tavares. From one JT to the next.

How spoiled.

Is it possible to be spoiled with one WC championship and zero Cups in 25 years?

I’d honestly be worried if I was an Isles fan he didn’t sign after the draft the way Carlson has. They’ve done everything they could and can offer the most money, if he was all in on staying he wouldn’t be going through the LeBron dog and pony show.

I think Tavares is leaving, but I don't think you can conclude that based on taking meetings. Stamkos took meetings too.

i mean, the caps won the cup, so why wouldn't carlson want to stay? it seems that JT is loyal, but obviously he's been hurt from the past. Lou has to work real hard to convince him that they're moving in the right direction, considering they missed playoffs last season

He did but I think he was genuinely conflicted about Toronto, plus he and Cooper weren’t getting along at the time and they were trying to reduce his role late that season iirc

I think that maybe a big part of it, though the Rangers are not an attractive opportunity right now no matter what.

We would have better odds for him if we were out west.

I am content with the fact this isn’t going to happen so I don’t care much anymore. Be best if he goes out west, but besides that whatever.

For those unaware, Ken Dryden is one of the leaders of the concussion and CTE awareness movement. He had an op-ed published by the Washington Post yesterday.

Opinion | The National Hockey League is skating around the brain-injury problem
...the words of one longtime NHL executive in an email revealed by the lawsuit: “We need to make sure every elbow to the head is not a major penalty. Five-minute majors attract attention. Two-minute minors go away quickly, especially with the media”

That's a good point. Even if he is not going to be a Rags player(which would be the ultimate betrayal), he would still have to contend with plenty of bitter isles fans if all he did was switch teams to one (Devils) across the river.

I also think he'll end up heading to a team out west....far away from the EAST Coast.

EDIT : Whoops. Corrected. EAST coast, I meant.

Duclair is gonna be a UFA, Hawks didn't send him a QO. Wonder if Shero is interested. I know I am.

Where would a guy like Duclair fit on this Devils' team? I'm seeing he's only a LW, meaning he's pushing one of Hall, Bratt, Johansson, Coleman, Quenneville, Wood (all primary LWers) out of position/lineup. He needs to clear waivers so no way the team can stash him in Bingo.

Yeah seriously... with his speed, he would fit right in. Only 22 years old, so plenty of time to break out still. Wonder why Chicago let him go...

The Devils writer for The Athletic mentioned that at the draft a few people mentioned team's might not give QO's to a few guys just based on the contract limit. Maybe Chicago is too close to the limit? Either way, would be nice for Shero to sign him. He's still so young and has a lot of talent. Might fit in well.

Looks like Chicago's at 44 contracts without their free agents. I can see how they're up against the 50 limit after they re-sign Jurco and their minor leaguers.

That said, I'm not really a fan of Duclair. If anyone under the radar, I'd like to sign Austin Czarnik.

There has to be some untapped ability that a lot of teams haven't seen for the Devils to think he could be a regular in the current forward group even if it can seem a little bit underwhelming at times.
