Bah...

From Elliotte Friedman (sportsnet):
Calvin de Haan is still rehabbing from in-season shoulder surgery has talked to the New York Islanders about coming back. He’s also received interest from other teams.

Is there a dark horse not mentioned anyone can see winning the bid?

I don't think they'd go through all the trouble of having teams fly out to meet them in LA, only to then sign with somebody who didn't make a presentation. Although Stamkos was supposedly turned off by the package Toronto put together to woo him a couple summers ago, so anything is possible.

NHL.com is speculating he'll let the Islanders know today on what his decision is since he'd have to sign before Sunday to be able to get that 8th year.

Can't wait til it's over, frankly. Sour grapes here but since he's not even considering us I'm getting sick of hearing about it.

i believe he leaves. if he was going to stay with the islanders he would've resigned by now. honestly too it looks ridiculously bad that he went to this level of holding out even if he does resign with them.

Stamkos fielded offers and then re-signed with Tampa on this exact same day. Obviously not with this type of pomp and circumstance that Tavares has done, but you can't really fault the guy for seeing what's out there. He's a gigantic fish in this FA pond, he knows he'll get paid pretty handsomely.

I do feel that he'll leave though, as well. Stamkos at least had a Cup contender to come back to at the end of the day where as Tavares has better possible options out there with the field. If I had to guess, I feel like San Jose makes the most sense for him to compete now.

Not necessarily true. As has been pointed out, Stamkos did wind up coming back to the Lightning two days before UFA. So I don’t think this means Tavares is out.

I do however get the feeling and vibe that he’s not coming back to the Islanders though, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

I just hope Tavares leaves because players signing with new teams is exciting for some reason. Also seeing the Isles go out and overspend on some other FA in a corresponding reaction move is always entertaining (when it’s not us, Volchenkov/Tallinder).

I hope he leaves cause it weakens a division rival and other than maybe Toronto there’s nowhere he can go where it conceivably matters in the playoff chase.

Stamkos also Hedman, Kucherov, Johnson, Palat, Stralman, Namestnikov, Killorn, etc. to play with, and was coming off a Cup Final appearance in 2015 and an ECF appearance in 2016. It's pretty easy to say yes to that situation.

I know I sound like a jerk, but Lou should have done something with his goaltending by now, which is one thing (assuming he was behind Andersen, but maybe he wasn’t) he definitely still seems to be good at. JT can’t feel particularly confident looking around and seeing all these others teams that have better goaltending (or actually have goaltending st all) and then seeing Thomas Greiss as being at the top of his current organization’s goalie depth chart.

Maybe they couldn’t trade for Grubauer though. I thought it was a lock, as soon as they hired Barry. Carolina supposedly offered more than Colorado did, but Washington didn’t wanna send him in-division.

As overrated as Martin Jones is, I think a player around the league is gonna be a lot more confident in him than Thomas Greiss. Especially when it’s a player who played with Greiss last year and was witness to the atrocity that he provided in net. Even the glass blimp in Dallas instills more confidence from the trainers room or while on IR than a healthy Greiss does.

I agree with you. I think he’s gone. I just don’t think it’s because he hasn’t signed yet. Obviously, the later he doesn’t sign, the higher odds of him leaving probably goes. I just don’t think him currently being unsigned takes the Islanders out of the race or rules them out just yet.

I think Lou has paid enough attention over the last two years to know that dealing for Cory right now could be the death knell for the Islanders. If he dealt for Cory right now, I’d totally believe Lou was working for the Devils again and is a double agent who took the job with the NYb to sabotage the Islanders from within. Then we’d even start trying to connect conspiracy theories if Tavares walks, as to Lou doing something to ensure he left.

I don't think writers make enough newspaper articles for him to keep up, anymore, though :sarcasm:
