With the Sharks reported to have re-signed Logan Couture at 8 years, are they still in Tavares talks? And if they are, could the Devils be trade partners? Nothing jumps off the page to me, but maybe someone here watches the team closely and sees a good trade candidate

Jack Johnson intrigued me. I know his numbers don't scream "good" but to get a five year deal is a LOT of term. Obviously they see something in him.

3 million AAV right now is an average #4. He should be that and depending on how he rebounds, he could be a steal at that price.

It's likely he wanted some stability and guaranteed annual income with his money issues. Johnson probably took the longer deal rather than sign a two or three year deal at ~4ish and Penguins figured it's their best bet at keeping the AAV down.

I believe they're still in the running for Tavares. As far as trade partners go, I don't really think there's anything that I'd like to have from them, at least not that they'd be interested in selling to us. Hertl would be pretty sweet, but there's also a lot of guys on bad contracts (Vlasic is already declining, Braun is f***in worse than Andy Greene and we don't want him), Pavelski is old and will be a UFA after this year. The Sharks need to move on from him if he wants anything more than a 1-2 year contract and a raise from his current deal. I think Donskoi would be pretty cool too. I'd love to try and get him for fairly cheap.

Stay away from Melker Karlsson, he f***in stinks. He's good for a couple of really sweet goals once in a while, but is an otherwise abysmal player. Don't want him at all. I fear he may be the next Wingels, he's already down that path, but I don't think he'll wind up bottoming out as bad as Tommy Wingels did. By the same token, Tommy Wingels best seasons were also quite a bit better than Karlsson's best seasons.

Who did you have in mind from the Sharks?

I know a ton of ppl on here dump on him but I wouldn't have minded taking a flier on him. Obviously a two or three year deal wouldn't have gotten it done though. I wouldn't go 5 years for him though so whatever.

Wow this is great insight. I think Vlasic would've been a good idea if his term weren't so extreme. If the Sharks are building the team around Tavares/Couture, maybe the Devils can get Pavelski on the cheap (but I'd doubt it). Beyond them, the only others I had in mind were Karlsson and Donskoi, so you actually hit all the main points I had in mind!

I figure Jack Johnson will probably be the Pens amnesty buyout in 2-3 more years, whenever the CBA is up and the league gives out the freebie amnesty buyouts, so that teams can be compliant with the inevitable (temporarily) lowered cap number once the next CBA is put into place.

I'm not an expert on the Pens cap situation currently, but I figure they don't have any other poor contracts right now. As we know, a lot can change in 2-3 years though. There could be somebody that looks fine now, but is a plague on their cap is 2-3 more years. I expect Johnson to be pretty bad in 2-3 years from now.

I think Pavelski would be good here. He's slow, but a 20+ goal and 60+ point guy is still a 20+ goal/60+ point guy.

I doubt he'll be this good in 2-3 years from now, so I'm very against the Sharks handing out a lengthy term extension to him after this year, and I also think the price to acquire him will be pretty steep for us. More than it's worth, but I wouldn't be against him here. I'd just be against what it would probably take to acquire him. He can tip a puck like no other in the league. It's a skill with him more than anything or anybody else.

Honestly, I don't even know what the hell is happening with Thornton right now.

I think Vlasic is still okay, but I don't think he's that effective as a #1 guy anymore, if even a #2 guy anymore. I think his term and cap hit are a little too much. Doug Wilson has handed out a few really big contracts lately. I'm sure Couture's will be more of the same.

LOL just watched a clip from Insider Trading and they said at the very end that Cam Ward was moving on from the Canes and expected to sign in Chicago as insurance for Corey Crawford.

The window truly has slammed shut for them. Because Anton Forsberg is actually worse than Cam Ward? Okay....

5 years for Jack Johnson is too much, but at least the cap hit isn't so bad to where they can't dump him if they need to get out of the contract in a few years. I think he's pretty good buddies with Crosby too, so that may have played into it.

I saw that same clip earlier and I knew you’d love that.

Good news is this means the Carolina Nascars are keeping Scott Darling and not burying him or buying him out. Everybody got themselves some from Darling last year. I don’t know what they’re doing in nets, nor do I know what Lou plans to do, either. Word is that Carolina tried to trade for Grubauer but Wash wanted more for him since he was in-division. So Colorado got him instead.

I'm not sure what Lou is doing in goal, but I sure hope JT is asking him what the hell he's doing about it. Grubauer seemed the most logical for them, now he's gone off the map. So it looks like it's either some kind of stop-gap signing or trade. Maybe he likes Calvin Pickard, who was brought into Toronto via trade after Vegas waived him at the start of last season? He played for the Marlies for most of last year. Does he sign someone like Bernier?

I’m sure he’ll sign the forward Bernier, yes.

I feel like Lou might actually sign Mrazek or Hammond (one or the other), then DD will talk about how they'll definitely be in the playoffs, if not do a lot of damage in them once they get there.

I think he's UFA.

I wonder if Craig Anderson would be an actual option? In his cycle of good year, bad year he's due for a good year.
I think they'd be better off staying away from Anderson. He's had bad years like that before and bounced back, but he's turning 37 this year. I think it may be the end of the road for him. He looked like the 2014 Marty most times I saw him this year. Definitely against Florida when we needed them to lose late in the season. He was awful and he used to be money against the Panthers and rarely ever lost to them, let alone got lit up by them.

Oh how it kills me to see the Blackhawks window closing. I wonder how their fans will cope? Probably by crying into all the Stanley Cups they've won since we've been rolling out the likes of Josefson and Tedenby
