They have 43M tied up in Toewes, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson and Hossa

Doesn't leave a whole lot more...
If they sign Panarin to 6M, for 17/18 they would then have 64 M committed to 7 forwards, 4 d and 1 goalie.

That's just brutal.

Right now, they are 70.6M
and then there is this wrinkle:

You didn't even include the ~$5 million for Anisimov on a full NMC. And they won't sign Panarin until next summer. Then they'd have to protect him at the draft won't they?

The thing is, how many of them, if any of them, could not be justified at the time of their signing those big contracts? Just life under a hard cap. It's comes calling for everyone eventually.

And while peopel are busy executing BOwman and Lombardi, keep an eye on Tampa and their issues now too. Everyone seems to think their team is the model and immune to it but sure enough once their RFA talent catches up with the rest of the league they're up **** creek just like everyone else.

Yes, the 'smart way' to build in the cap era is to continually cycle cheap youth in, and most teams are showing how hard that is to do, even the ones that are getting lauded as geniuses while everyone slams DL.

Edit: in other words, oh my, we lost Lucic. Meanwhile Dallas is losing Nuke, TB in danger with Palat/TJ/Kucherov, etc.

Florida is in best shape right now. All core guys are signed at or around 6M.

I like a lot of what Florida is doing but next year could be tight for them. They have $60M committed to next year and need 6 more roster players. Definitely room to move but also have to be careful

Use Kane as an example. Would the Hawks let him walk as a free agent, so that they opened up room to sign other guys? No, that would be crazy. Potentially smart, but no GM would do that. Unless they were guaranteed not to be fired for the next decade. You might see more GM's take a bunch of wild chances if that was the case. However, how many teams would be lining up to trade a bunch of youth for Kane, knowing they themselves would have to then sign him to a $10m contract, making their own cap situations that much more complicated? How much youth could you even get, because who can absorb $10m while only $2m is going the other way?

Lombardi has made some hockey mistakes, but he's also been on the wrong side of timing and the realities of life.

You can add the Ducks into that too. The have budget and won't go above it, and now as their cheap defensive talent contracts come up they can't pay them because of the other contracts. If reports are correct Lindholm is asking around 7.5 mil and Rakell is looking for 4 mil x 6 and is nowhere near to being signed .

Some tidbits from around the NHL from Bob McKenzie

Trouba - Asking price for Trouba is a talanted young LD. 15 teams contacted them but very few have the right fit. Boston, NY Rangers and Colarado, are the most interested with NJ and Detroit in the mix as well.

Isles goalie trio- Halak, Greiss and Berube, somebody has to go. The ISles are leaning towards a younger duo and it could be Halak odd man out but right now, no goalie market.

Johnny Hockey- no eligible for an offer sheet and Calgary taking their time, they want something in the 6.5 area and he wants 8. Could be he signs a short deal, as rumors that he wants to go back to the East Coast.

Tobias Rieder- Coyotes and Rieder can't agree on LTC so are trying for a 2 yr bridge, Yotes firm at 2.2, Rieder at 2.5. Yotes not willing to move , consensus is that Rieder has done all the moving and was a total team player, never balked at his assignments

Rasmus Ristolainen (Sabres), Hampus Lindholm (Ducks)- Both teams using Jones 5.4 and Reilly's 6M as comparables but the players camps are at Eckblads' 7.5 So far not much movement

and from the

Tampa Bay Times - Kucherov is said to be 6M for LTC but Bolts need to move $$$ out (Bishop most likely) to do that.

Why would Islanders trade Halak? Berube is unproven backup. His contract expires after this season, same as Greiss who is not even a year younger than Halak. One season as a starter and 41 games only, because Halak was injured. Bishop will be traded first(a big if). Maybe Tampa should have let Stamkos go together with his awful passing ability.

I really hope this is the last game of the World Crap. It's also the first game I'm watching, probably just in time to see Kopitar break something on live tv.

I could see the Islanders trying to position themselves to get Bishop eventually; Bishop and Garth Snow are both University of Maine alums. Shedding Halak's contract would help since the Islanders are up against the cap (although Grabovski's 5 mil might end up on LTIR for awhile).

Seems like they've been trying to move Halak for a few months but nobody was really interested. I think there was some talk about a Halak for Jimmy Howard (another Maine alum) trade last season, but Howard's bad year probably killed any chances of that.

ha, europe outsmarting canada. i like how they play, simple and effective. kind of reminds me of the best of lak, the game itself. and kopitar + josi is a fantastic combo, i wish to see that again one day.

kopi and dd almost involved in a fight, gah. it wasn't really close, just some sparks, and kopi made a very big hug around the neck to end it, but boy **** got frozen in my ass there for a second.

lol Kopitar patted him on the mouth. His gloves must have stinked but DD was all smiles

So if Canada doesn't win tonight, Kopitar and Doughty miss Frozen Fury?

Eh nevermind that's next weekend..
