I don't see how the Leafs can afford all 4 forwards long term.
They can't and they shouldn't try to keep all of them. They have a valuable commodity to trade in Nylander, and they should make a deal to improve their team on defense.

30-year old Wayne Simmonds will be a UFA at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how that situation turns out. He would be a great add for a contender on a 3 to 4 year deal. Of course if he has an agent, they will be asking for an 8-year deal.

Can the Leafs win without Nylander? I think so.

As an asset, I don't think they should let Nylander go to waste. Trade him for a good young defenseman. Sadly, the Kings have none to offer. The Ducks might be a team that could swing a deal for Nylander.

Bob Murray holds on to prospect the way Scrooge McDuck holds onto money. Hell, they can't even get a deal done with Richie right now.

And of course they would be trading him too late at this point. Other GM's know what Toronto is up against, and this is just the start of it for them. Should've traded him in the summer of 2017. They will still get something for him, but probably not as much as they could have. Whatever team trades for Nylander will have the same contract headache, so they're going to need cheap young players too.

Lucic? How about Bobby Holik? This **** has been going on for as long as GMs have had dicks in their pants...

It's part of the business. GM's can't be too smart. They have to offer money. They're forced to now with the cap floor, but if GM's start low balling all players, Donald Fehr is not going to sit there quietly.

It's supply and demand. Too few players are UFA's every summer. If more guys were out there, Lucic wouldn't have gotten what he got.

If GMs could keep it in their pants he wouldn't have got what he got either. If the best offer out there was 4x4, it wouldn't matter if he was the only guy on the market, he would have signed for 4x4.

Donald Fehr? Bettman is licking his chops waiting to make a meal out of Fehr again. Maybe owners should wake up and direct their GMs to forget the quick fix (that never works).

Sure, Toronto may not get max value, but getting max value out of every trade isn't required to make a trade. For example, if the Kings are an also ran at the trade deadline, I will still be saying it's time to get something for Jeff Carter and Alec Martinez.

He's going to sign a contract that I wouldn't touch

Neither will Ron Hextall, which is why he's not signed. Simmonds wants an LTC, at 7M per.
He'll be 31 when it starts and an aging power forward whose body is breaking down. They have more talented prospects than room on the team. He's totally replaceable, and only good within 15 feet of the other teams net. In front of his own goalie, slow skater, and average defensively. Also, has not been a guy in the playoffs, that you can count on (along with Giroux and Voracek).

He did try to move Simmonds (Calgary/dougie hamilton and Minny for Dumba) but neither GM wanted the other player offered with Simmonds. And hexy wouldn't give up the player/prospect they wanted.
