Wow Habs fans are touchy. I make a remark about drafting for need, not even knocking Kotkaniemi himself, and a few got very defensive.

I forgot that Bergevin has never made a mistake before.

Habs fans consistently boo the American anthem, too.

Clifford isn't slow his speed is normal. But he sucks at everything else. Sure looked like a good second liner around his debut. But his game fell off a Cliff.
Kyle Clifford never looked like a 2nd liner; maybe a good 3rd liner but never anything top six worthy.

His production hasn't really dropped off at all since joining the league; he's a 14 point 4th line "scrapper" that won't hurt you defensively and has two Stanley Cups to his name.

Last season he would have most likely broke his career high in points and goals had he stayed healthy. But 10 points in 50 games for a 4th liner is solid production.

Skinner had a no move and it is close to home for him. It sounds like the no move really hindered what Carolina could get in return.

It did, he vetoed as least 2 trades that I read about. Either he only wanted the Sabres or he wants to play with Eichel to spike his numbers for the LTC next summer somewhere else....

Skinner will be worth more at the deadline than he is now. Lots of teams could have matched that package, but many would have to make room for him by disrupting their roster in other ways. At the deadline, cap space is banked so a lot more teams could afford him, driving up his value.

Buffalo essentially traded two 3rds, a 2nd, and a 6th for the 1st+ they will easily get for him at the deadline. It will likely be a low 1st, but that player has a far higher chance to be an impact player in the league than any of those other assets.
But if that's the case, than why didn't Carolina just hold onto Skinner and trade him at the deadline for a 1st + ?

I think this trade demonstrates how little value pending UFA's have in today's NHL.

will be interesting. Skinner wanted to be in Buffalo so does Buffalo honor the NTC? Can Buffalo sign him?

I really think Carolina would have held onto him and moved him at the deadline, but they made the mistake of giving him a NMC that kicked in late in his contract. Too much risk there, they had to get what they could.

The cap has affected the UFA to be more than any other type of player for sure. As important as star players are, a player who can get you 40-50 points on an ELC is one of the most valuable assets a team can own nowadays.

Carolina might also have an internal cap which constrains them. Without Skinner (6 million), they're a couple million over the floor. Add in the injury risk (a la Mike Green and Detroit last year), and maybe they had to move him before the season rather than eat the salary and try to get a better return near the deadline.

Yeah, I must admit I was starting to get concerned about this if the Kings were going to have to move Doughty.

It will be interesting to see what E. Karlsson gets traded for. My guess is it will be underwhelming.

geez ducks really praying getzlaf perry and kesler stay relevant through their contracts.. the aav isn't outrageous with how the cap's moving but the term is nasty given how much of that team disappears with those 3

I’m wondering if he can stay healthy for a year or two. If not that contract will be horrible. If he can keep away from the constant injuries, the AAV looks about correct. I’m not a fan of the length, but this is the cost of resigning your players.
