Leafs paid Martin's bonus on July 1st apparently. Islanders are on the hook for 750K this year and 1.75 mil next year. Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck was a good 4th line a couple years ago.

The key phrase there being “a couple years ago”.

Dumb move by Leafs - they are soft as pillows and now just added Tavares. I'm sure every team next year will just mark on the board, run Tavares, run Mathews and no one will do anything.

It's 2018 not 1988.

This game within the game, and toughness arms race you think happens, well it really doesn't.

While I agree to a degree, it’s still a bonus to have a player on the ice that the opponents hate playing against, like Tom Wilson on the Caps. I don’t care much for guys like Reaves, but those who can play, chip in, and punish opposing dmen, that’s something that I felt the Kings have been missing from their bottom six.

I think during the playoffs, the only Kings forward besides Brown who actually was connecting with hits was Kempe, which was a pleasant surprise. And by no means does this suggest they need another Westgarth or Ivanans in the lineup. Players like that are just about extinct, and completely useless in today’s NHL.

You definitely want some sort of toughness in your line-up. Look at teams like Carolina; zero physical players making them a very easy team to play against.

Carolina grabs Da Haan. That’s a nice group they have on their backend. I really like Slavin.

I’m assuming they still entertain offers to move Faulk.

Had to, he's a fringe 4th liner with a 2.5 million salary, had to move him.

I don't see how anyone can say with a straight face that a toughness arms race doesn't happen when Ryan f***ing Reaves just got 2 years, nearly 3 million a year

SHOULDNT happen is a different story altogether

And he's just your stereotypical 4th liner. His career high is 13 points and 7 goals. Apparently teams see something in Reaves that they don't in guys like Jared Boll and Jordan Nolan who are also UFA's.

If nolan more consistently stirred things up and played a little more physical he would find a job

Jordan Nolan strikes me as the guy who's capable of being a good power forward but doesn't want to do power forward-like things.

It’s weird with him. Three or four times a year he’d have a game where he would be out there pancaking d-men and creating opportunities. Maybe even show some puck handling skill. Then...gone for months.

I just had a Leafs fan on Reddit tell me that hockey is very clearly a “strong link game” that values “top heavy gamebreaking talent” over depth.

Do these people even watch this league?

I heard Nolan doesn’t like fighting. In addition, in juniors there was a commitment issue with him which is why he was a late round pick. These are things that can become an issue when you think you have “made it.” I’ve met Jordan and he’s a nice guy and was my favorite King for a few years, but he did some things that bothered me. Turtled agaisnt Sestito, lined up with Reaves many times after the Kopitar elbow and did nothing, and the whole missing practice thing with Sutter. There are times he could dominate a shift and school a guy like Souray in a fight and then there were times he was invisible or started the brawl against the Ducks and turtled against Stoner. He also started that brawl in Vancouver and ended up fighting Ryan Stanton instead of Kassian or Sestito. Stanton was a rookie who only occasionally scraps.

Howyadoin, NY Rangers fan here. Most likely we are looking for cheap FA depth options with some upside. What are thoughts on Shore and Folin?

Folin is great in a bottom pair role (that right shot is a bonus too), where he gets into trouble is being asked to play #3/4 minutes.

Shore is just your run of the mill 4th liner, Sutter ruined him.
