Live look in at the Isles war room on free agent frenzy day.

JT’s contract offer down the hatch.

guess i missed hearing about gravel in the tavares drama

unfortunate but it clears the pipeline a bit

Funny how the Isles needed a new goalie and did nothing to address this. Bernier would've been a decent option.

Lou traded away Bernier in Toronto, but I'm not sure if there's any animosity there. It was a pretty ugly list of UFA goalies, most of the guys signed are backup level dudes. Islanders apparently kicked the tires on Craig Anderson who quietly requested a move. Gotta imagine there's limited teams interested in Anderson, so they may opt for that route (and possibly could send Thomas Greiss' deal the other way). Plus the game of goalie musical chairs is nearly over and the Islanders represent the last potential starting gig available. So they might get their pick of the leftovers (Mason/Lehner/Lehtonen).

James Mirtle is arguing with people on Twitter about Matthews, Marner, and Nylander’s second contracts. What a homer.

There’s no universe in which Eichel makes $10 million, Drai 8.5, and Nylander and Marner don’t each get to at least 7. Matthews at 11 will be a steal at this point.

At the bare minimum, Matthews at 10, Marner and Nylander at 7, that’s $36 million tied up between four forwards (incl Tavares) by 2019. $42 million in five forwards if you count Marleau’s deal. Over half the cap.

Only the homiest of homers must think that Toronto will be able to keep their big three.

Leafs fans wonder why they get the attitude all the time. Main board threads:
"Leafs getting overpowered"
"Would it be a major failure if the Leafs don't win the cup within the next 5 years?"
"Does Toronto now have the best centers in the league?"
"The Leafs are the villain the NHL needs"
"(Has) a top team ever had a worse defense than the Leafs?"

Have to wonder if Vegas did themselves more harm than good by signing Stastny when they have to sign Karlsson, the idea being "oh, you think he's worth $6.5M, my guy just scored 43 goals, what's that worth to you?"

Granted, their are obvious differences, Stastny has had a long career and was a UFA.

They only have 2 NHL dmen under contract for the 19/20 season. Where are they going to get the other 5 dmen they need? And how are they going to afford them?

Seems like they'll have to move a forward for a dman.

They have three, Reilly, Zaitsev, and Dermott, I don't know if they resign Gardiner, but by 2019-2020 they expect Lilejegren and Borgman to be playing, that's 5 right there, they take the 3M from Hainsey and the 4M from Gardiner, and sign a good #4-#5 like a John Moore, or Jack Johnson etc,

They trade Martin for a back of pucks, resign Nylander, who won't get 7M, not based on what he's done, 5M, 3 years, Marner will get 7, Matthews will get 10, depends on the term for everyone though,

They should be fine with the cap, but it's going to rely on having the 3rd/4th line being carried by ELC guys,

With the departure of James Neal and David Perron , Vegas has lots 41 goals and 110 points. They've brought in Paul Stastny and Nick Holden.

They've gotten worse in my book.

No, they've gotten better, Perron is not a PPG player, he had a career year, he will regress to his mean, they got better up the middle, and they brought in a solid D....with the young guys they have coming up...they made the right moves, the issue is going to be, Karlsson isn't gonna score 41 again, Marchessault, isn't going to average a PPG again etc, they will have their work cut out for them, but their banner guys had career years....gonna be real tough to live up to.

I'm a big fan of Paul Stastny, but at the end of the day he's your average 2nd line center. 16 goals last year and 18 the year before. Nick Holden is just a #4/5D which is an upgrade over Sbisa.

Losing two consistent 20+ goal 50 point players in Neal and Perron is gonna hurt. Like you said; there's no way Karlsson has nearly as good of a year as he did.

Statsny is a solid 2nd line C, and is an upgrade on Haula, and pushes Haula into a proper 3rd line position, by just counting Stastnys goals at 16, you are ignoring the 37 others that he brought, can't get an assist, without a goal being scored.

Losing Neal and Perron will hurt their winger depth, but it allows them to see if Tatar is a fit, given the right setting now, he's clearly not a 3rd/4th line W, he's a solid fit on the 2nd line W, he does have a scoring touch.

Holden is a #4 D, and an upgrade on Sbisa, Engeland, Merril, McNabb, Miller etc,
