No it wouldn't have been. Kopitar is not what the Preds were looking for. They wanted a top young center, age comparable to the player they were trading. Johansen is 5 yrs younger that Kopi and his new contract (rumored to be in the 6M range) will be less than what Kopi was making. Trading for a player 7 yrs older than Jones, a player who you can't resign, makes zero sense.

Yeah, maybe I wasn't clear. I was advocating trading Kopitar for a younger, less accomplished 1C, not a defenseman.

I won't disagree with this. When your team captain is out there specifically not trying because his view is that the coach's system is "too hard", it's time to consider trading that guy.......

Doesn't matter. The Hawks had to give Seabrook that term and that money, because if they didn't some other really smart GM from another team would have given it to him.

It's not that they had to. It's that they were going to. Even if it's to a lesser extent than Lombardi, Bowman has an emotional attachment to the guys that won for him, until he has no other choice. That's when he'll turn Sharp and later Daley into nothing, or get a guy older than Saad in the Saad trade. He'll also trade some younger pieces for Ladd and get Oduya, and sign Campbell, in turn the clock back moments. Even throw in an additional failed rental trade last year.

The Blues let their captain walk in free agency last year after they didn't win. Had the Kings not won in 2012, it's possible Brown is allowed to hit free agency in 2013.

Pittsburgh has some contracts up this year. We'll see what they have to do, especially if they win again. Maybe it'll all work out for them. Maybe Rutherford will make some tough choices that Lombardi and Bowman didn't/couldn't/wouldn't make.

Rust and Guentzel's cap hits combined are less than Kyle Clifford's.

That is how you keep winning in the NHL, have to draft and develop players on cheap contracts and move on from your James Neal and Dave Bolland types.

I hope that Blake really values the draft and managing the cap better more than Lombardi did.

...you do remember Pittsburgh went a decade between winning Cups, right?

...and people laughed when I said trade Kopitar for Johansen.

As they should have and still should. Johansen had the kind of year this year that got Kopitar eviscerated in 2015. His BEST season isn't even Kopitar's career average season. One first round playoff series doesn't erase any of that no matter how much you want it to.

This is one of those times you go off the deep end with the Kopitar hate ignoring context. Johansen is barely better than Jeff Carter.

NOt really a fair comparison, at 24, Johansen is just entering his prime years, Carter at 32 is well past that. Thru the first 7 yrs (where RJ is now) RJ .66 PPG and JC .75, but JC was used at wing as much as center, and allowed for more goals. Also had the benefit of a great PP and with Stevens, an offensive geared system. RJ is more of a playmaker and I saw a big growth spurt in his game this year. I think he'll only get better.
And is a legit #1.

So at age 24, we shouldn't expect Johansen to get better, and at age 30 we shouldn't expect Kopitar to be below average from here on out. Got it.

I wonder if Kopitar for Ovechkin might be a thing....?

I'd rather watch Kopitar age and retire, even ungracefully, then have an older version of Ovechkin come in from nowhere. I guess you would at least get rid of the extra 3 years on Kopitar's contract.

How about a sad trade between the Kings and Hawks, where a couple big contracts go back and forth? No quite as pathetic as Ehrhoff and Scuderi, but something like that.

Calder finalists
Patrik Laine of Jets, Auston Matthews of Maple Leafs, Zach Werenski of Blue Jackets up for award given to best rookie in NHL

Glad Werenski got recognized. Hardest position to adapt to coming into the NHL and at 19, he made it fluid. Werensk led all rookie defensemen in goals (11), assists (36) and points (47), and all rookies with a plus-17 rating. He averaged 20:54 of ice time per game in 78 games.

Love everything about him and his game.

Norris Finalists

Karlsson (17 goals, 71 pts) Brent Burns (29 goals, 76 pts) and Lightning blue-liner Victor Hedman. (16 goals, 72 pts)

Glad Hedman got the nod, he was outstanding for them, esp post all star game, trying to get them in the playoffs.

No, I was responding to the idea of Johansen going beastmode and that he's awesome when really his "awesome" season this year would have been literally Kopitar's worst season in the NHL if it weren't for this season. And that's on the 11th-ranked offensive team. Hell, he only had two more goals than Kopi THIS YEAR, and look how much he's getting wrecked for it! It's about perspective, grass is always greener. We (some of us, anyway) do not appreciate Kopitar enough.

Agree, think the voters got both these sets of candidates totally correct, and love the Werenski nod. Surprised he put it together in the NHL so quickly, but man, stud.

Thoroughly enjoying the Hawks sweep.

Kudos to the Preds. I'm on the bandwagon. We should all be aware that they have never been out of the first round; however, they have dispatched the Ducks 2x, Detroit and now Chicago off the top of my head in the first round.

Just for that, we should all be pulling for them from here on out.

He generally faced the top lines on other teams, not easy. And what's not to love about the pairing with Jones.

Them or Minnesota are the only teams to want from the West. Edmonton as long as Anaheim or SJ are still alive.

I hope Hedman wins the Norris but you know it's going to be Burns or Karlson. Karlson is a great offensive defenseman but Doughty is still the better defender.

This season he wasn't. Drew performed below his level of expectation, along with many others. I was expecting more out of him after his Norris win and him assuming more of a leadership role.

being here in Chicago, I've enjoyed the Hawks meltdown. plenty of folks here are in disbelief and calling for everything including trading untouchables like Toews and Kane. the funniest i saw was a buddy last night on FB say he's a Blues fan now so he can see STL knock out NSH. c'mon now that is just ridiculous, a hardcore Hawks fan rooting for St Loser

the past two years at least i've heard plenty of smug Hawks fans talking smack about LA's downhill slide. well.....

old man time just caught up to the Hawks and be slapped the living ***** out of them.

the sweep by NSH to me compares to the Kings non-playoff performance in 2015. everything is clicking along, the team is winning and then the bottom drops out.

there are so many comparisons between both teams and being close to each of them I saw this coming and telling them to expect it. i didn't see this smack down to this extent, but I saw NSH winning in six games.

talk radio this morning was all over the place. GM has been bad, poor personnel decisions, trades, drafts. old vets on long-term contracts that shouldn't have been re-signed. old vets they need to trade, expose to the expansion draft. poor prospects and lack of prospects. a D core that has at best 3 solid D and the rest are either undersized for the physical and/or lack foot speed. a system that doesn't work any longer, with the rest of the league has now caught up. etc.....

sound familiar?

the next few months will be enjoyable here in Chicago as a Kings fan

I admit I peaked over at the Blackhawks fans. And they sound exactly like us... Word for word. Coach is married to his players who can't play, team was way to focused on defense, Towes is overpaid and is gonna ruin the franchise. Even saw some fans wanting to bring in Sutter as coach!

It put it all into prospective. And makes you releaize how hard it is to win in this league. A month ago some Kings fans are saying if we were only built our team like the Hawks.... and now the Hawks fans want to blow up their team as much as Kings fans do. Gosh, I love this league! It's wild!

Norris should absolutely be Karlsson's this year, but all three finalists had stellar years.

Have to see how Drew does next year before I suggest he's not the better player.

Doughty still had a top-5 season, make no mistake, he just set an unrealistic expectation of near-flawlessness last season. There's a reason he won over Karlsson who was magnificent. The team went from best-defensive-team-in-the-league-AINEC with him on the ice to below average with him off. He tried to do much at times and that bit him, but I'll take that considering it showed how much he cares.
