Breaking: NHL linesman Don Henderson has filed a $10.25M lawsuit v Calgary Flames D Dennis Wideman, @TSN_Sports and @CTVNews have learned.

I'm not a fan of litigation so I can't get too excited about a $10.25MM lawsuit being filed for something that happened during the course of a game.

Should players be able to sue other players every time they get hurt from an act that is a penalty/suspension?

I think this is a different scenario. Yes he got suspended, but Henderson's career is probably down now. Henderson hasn't refereed a game since he got cross-checked and probably won't be able to in the future. That is future earnings that he cannot get anymore due to an injury. Wideman deliberately turned around and cross-checked Henderson in the back of his neck/head. Seems very similar to what Steve Moore did when Bertuzzi took him down and then he sued him after the fact that his playing career was ended by that hit.

Admit that I haven't followed the situation since last year. Assumed that he was still able to do his job since I wouldn't expect that hit to end the guys career.

Nothing about this hit from behind on an unsuspecting NHL linesman was "part of the game." It ended his career as a linesman.

I hope he wins and the organization and the NHLPA, who defended Wideman's actions, both pay up as a result.

His career is all but done and he's gonna win a big settlement. The Flames and Wideman will lose this, it was assault.

Not if this holds up from Wideman's appeal:
Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman technically won his appeal of his 20-game suspension for hitting a referee, but the result is more of a theoretical win than a real victory. Independent arbitrator James Oldham cut Wideman’s suspension to 10 games Friday after ruling that while Wideman did injure a referee, there is not sufficient proof that Wideman did so intentionally.

I'd imagine the possibility of Wideman not being "all-there" at the time of the hit will reduce the amount of the settlement. That's what helped trim the suspension down to Antoine Vermette levels, no?

I thought NYR/MON would be a snoozer of a series but I forgot that Montreal added a couple of *******s to their roster.

Nice little scrap between Shaw and Smith. Nice to see Smith land one shot before the linesmen could save Shaw.

Lundqvist looking pretty average in the 1st period of Game 5 against Montreal.

Rust and Guentzel's cap hits combined are less than Kyle Clifford's.

That is how you keep winning in the NHL, have to draft and develop players on cheap contracts and move on from your James Neal and Dave Bolland types.

I hope that Blake really values the draft and managing the cap better more than Lombardi did.

Yip. This is where the poor drafting from 2011 on has really hurt.

Now, I know there is the "If you get x players out of a draft, it is a good one" theory, but the Kings haven't drafted an impact player since Pearson. I know 2nd round players aren't a guarantee, but DL used to make cheddar in the 2nd round but lost the touch after Toffoli. It's exacerbated when that 2nd rounder is the Kings first pick in the draft as well, which it often has been.

7th round guys getting ELCs is cool...it really is. To get NHL players that late is a testament to scouting and development. Failure at the top of the draft since 2011--save for Pearson--has really hurt as the cap issue continued to get worse. This is why I'm all over the Cernak trade since he should be more valuable than a back up goalie for a month. Horrible trade or horrible 2nd round pick...again.

Hopefully DL's recent drafting can be looked back on favorably in a couple of seasons but losing the touch helped doom him here. They may not win either Cup without King/Nolan/Voynov coming up in 2012 and then Pearson in 2014.

They're also put in a position to succeed when playing with the likes of Crosby and Malkin.

But they would probably be better off if they skated shifts with a guy like Clifford or Lewis so they will learn how to compete along the walls. That's far more important than being able to bury pucks into the net.

Didn't realize Henderson wasn't able to come back. That's brutal.

Chicago fans wondering if the hockey gods will smile on them, and they too might experience the thrill of coming back to win a seven game series after being down 0-3.

Perhaps, but I would not expect it.

Ryan Johansen has owned Toews thus far in this series. Just physically dominating him.

Duncan Keith doing an amazing job of holding the zone in the 3rd period.

...and the Preds score to go up 2-0.

Yeah, it's over for the Hawks this season.

Great 3-on-1 rush and passing by the Preds. 3-0!

On to the Nashville bandwagon! On another note, maybe rhe hawks fire Q and we get him:)

But seriously, maybe Blake is waiting for the end of this series to see what happens.
