Far different scenario; Crosby is on a 12 year deal and Malkin makes less than Kopitar and Toews. Kopitar makes more than Crosby and McDavid will definitely make more than Kopitar.
I'm not sure I see the difference. The claim is that signing players that are approaching 30 years old as franchise players won't let you win the Cup. Last year, two franchise players were approaching 30 and were signed to close to max contracts and that club won the Cup.
Malkin makes $1m less than Toews and $500k less than Kopitar. I don't think that's sufficiently significant to disprove the fact that signing franchise talents to long deals in their late 20s is just fine. If the Pens signed Crosby this past summer to an 8-year deal, I don't think the Pens would be any less of a Cup favourite right now.
