Cap range will go from $55.4M to a ceiling of $75M for next season
----------------

$75M it is.

Leaves the Kings just south of $9M.

Chicago will still be over the cap with their current roster.

This is a 2.74% increase in the cap from last season. Players will likely give up 15% - 17% of their checks to escrow next season.

Is this summer's UFA class really worth it? No.

I just saw the Blues left unprotected a guy named Jacob Doty. I haven't checked but please say his middle name is Brad.

George McPhee has told NHL teams that today is the last day they'll complete a trade to protect their players.

I've heard 5 rumored, all for 1st rounders, going to be interesting to see how many picks he racks up for this year and beyond.

Who says they sign a UFA (especially if they are looking for a top 6 forward)? For all we know this gives them more flexibility to trade a defenseman for a Top 6 forward, looking at you Rangers (bought out Girardi, Klein maybe retiring, could use a defenseman), maybe Stepan? He could be the 2C and Carter could play with Kopitar, or Kreider to play on Kopitar's wing.

I am speaking in general regarding this summer's UFA class. The only reason to increase the cap via the escalator is to allow UFAs to get a contract with a bigger cap hit. Are there any UFAs out there worth it?

Remember, use of the escalator is an NHLPA decision, not an NHL decision.

Well yea, then your point is valid. This class is a joke, but it's all about getting guys paid.

That's just it though, guys already under contract aren't getting paid. Every time they use the escalator to artificially increase the cap, the players already under contract give up more money in escrow. The escrow money almost never comes back.

The owners don't care, because it's always a 50/50 revenue split with the players. If fact, many owners want the cap to go up. It increases interest among the fans during the off season, and it helps bail out teams that have made stupid decisions in the past like the Kings and Blackhawks.

From Frank Seravalli TSN

There are several deals that are believed to be already in place.

Anaheim – to not select Sami Vatanen and Josh Manson
Columbus – to not select Joonas Korpisalo, Josh Anderson and Jack Johnson
NY Islanders – to not select Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson, Ryan Strome and/or Calvin de Haan.
Chicago – to take Marcus Kruger.

The Blue Jackets are believed to be giving up their first round pick, No. 24. The Islanders are believed to be giving up a first round pick. The Blackhawks are believed to be giving up Trevor van Riemsdyk. The Ducks are believed to be giving up a big package. The Ducks don’t have a first round pick but do have some young defensemen.

The Golden Knights could have other deals in the works as teams like the Senators, Rangers, Wild, Predators and Panthers may have players they don’t want to lose.

I would think the Ducks are giving up something significant for Vegas to stay away from both Vatanen and Manson. They don't have a 1st in this year's draft (traded to Dallas for Patrick Eaves), and I would think it would cost more than a 1st in 2018 to lay off a top 3-4 defenseman who can log 20+ minutes.

Same applies to the Islanders and Brock Nelson. I would think he's worth more than just a 1st round pick.

I'm thinking Shea Theodore and Nik Kerdiles are on their way to LV as part of the agreement not to poach Manson or Vatanen.

Cbus gives up their 1st and Sonny Milano? Vegas takes Calvert or Karlsson in the ED.

Who the heck knows what Garth Snow is thinking, he protected 5 defenseman. He must have a deal in the works post ED with someone to move Hamonic for a forward.

Actually the wording of the CBA it's written in unless either side objects. But both sides can agree on another number. But to this point the league has just allowed the PA to make a call and agree to it.
When I get off mobile I'll go and grab that section. But it's on page 258 of the CBA.

Giving up Theodore? Damn, thats a tough one. I heard the other option is that Vatanen is going to Vegas.

If I am Anaheim, I do everything I can to protect Manson and not give up Montour or Theodore.

If Seravalli (TSN) is noting there is a deal in place to not select Vatanen and Manson then I am making the assumption that Theodore is going, just pure guessing on my end. I would find it difficult to see them not losing one of their young guys.

I think Theodore has fallen behind Manson and Montour in the pecking order with the Ducks so for them, it would not be that significant of a loss. Their defense pipeline is pretty strong.

Arizona's exposure list is pretty thin. I wonder if Vegas will give Doan a call and see if there is any interest. Pretty sure he wanted to continue playing.

I saw something out there today they called Kris Russell's agent to check in on him.

I am sure they will check in with a bunch of UFA's in the next day. Let the rumors fly. Interesting times, for sure.

There is your 3C for next season to help fill the leadership void.

I'm only half-joking. Doan't want but figure LA will be mentioned if he decides to keep on playing.

If DL was still around I bet he'd be pursing Doan.

I almost mentioned that in my post since I figured it would come up.

I fully agree; however, I still won't be surprised if Blake kicks the tires.

I expect whiffs in trades and free agency. They have space for this coming season so a cheap one-year deal with Doan could wind up happening if they are staring at the same roster + Ontario kids after July 1st.

I hope he just retires.
