I'm not saying they would've exposed them, but before the Puempel signing, they had to expose two of Stepan/Hayes/Grabner. They still have to, whether it's Stepan or whoever. If they trade Stepan before the draft, that's fine, but then they still need another forward that meets the requirements to expose. If they get another forward in any Stepan deal to expose, that's fine, but they were never not expansion draft compliant in general. The sentence from TSN gives no context is all.

Yes, they never were going to expose two of those 3 or any of the others noted so they we not going to be compliant unless they signed one of their RFA scrubs or traded for a 17/18 contract thus having the minimum of 2 forward players under contract for the upcoming season required for exposure.

If they do trade Stepan it's certain will take back a contract that has been signed for the 17/18 season in order to still meet the minimum exposure requirement.

Other media outlets have reported the same thing.

At the end of the day, it is most likely they pick Raanta unless there is a pre-arranged deal or he is dealt to a goalie needy team prior to the protect/available lists being submitted.

Jesper Fast might also be an intriguing pick.

Meh, enough about the Rags. I think we surpassed the quota for discussing them on this board.

Scratch Drouin off the list.

So, so excited to see what Blake does with all this freed up money. Better be a good reason that doesn't rhyme with Sochi to spread Greene's cap out for two seasons instead of one.

If he strikes out in the trade market, they'll toss money at someone because Luc isn't going to try to sell the same squad from last year. I'm not giving Blake grief either if he does strike out in the trade market: takes two to tango.

MTL gave up a top flight Prospect to get Drouin, no one was beating that offer.

Tampa wanted a young Defender to grow with the team.

Team to watch now is MIN. Lots of Jonas Brodin trade talk coming out of Twin Cities. I don't doubt Brodin would type of D MTL is targeting.

Replying to @TSNBobMcKenzie

Just opinion on my part, but if anything, I think this Drouin trade could make it more likely that Alex Galchenyuk will be traded.

Yup....

and about that new contract for Radulov, now that the Habs will be shelling out about 6 M or so for Drouin

Habs want Radulov back but his current contract demands will have to change otherwise it won't happen

Kucherov will be a UFA in 2019. They also have to re-sign Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat.

And if they didn't move Drouin, Johnson, Kucherov, Palat or Killorn they would have had to expose one of them, because Callahan and Stamkos (duh) have NMCs.

or if they had gone 7-3-1 without moving Drouin, they lose Namestnikov, but as you say, they couldn't afford to sign Drouin, Johnson and Palat.

Sure but Drouin outscored two of those three and is 4 years younger? Just seems a little weird to me.

I think in order for Yzerman to get that young, under 20-year old, top end defense prospect (who is a year removed from being selected 9th overall), they had to move Drouin.

Kings don't have a prospect even close Sergachyov, so if that is what Yzerman was looking for the discussions probably never got off the ground.

I would prefer to sign a winger and keep Carter at C, but if the Kings were to make a move for Galchenyuk they could always move Carter back to the wing.

Have you taken a look at the leaders in goals among UFAs? 2nd to TJ Oshie is Patrick Eaves, after that is Marleau, but it doesn't appear that he will go elsewhere.

Paul LaDue is our best d propsect. Don't know if Kings or Bolts ever talked him in a deal.

If I only have a $10, $5 and $1 bill in my wallet, the $10 bill is my best bill.

I hope he is a Top 4 guy eventually, but we'd all be happy if he turned into a Martinez-type guy, right? That is not the kind of potential that is going to get you Drouin in comparison to the Habs prospect.

Montreal is a division rival for Tampa. You know they didn't want to trade Drouin there. The Habs must have had by far the best offer on the table.

If the Kings were serious about Drouin, they would have had to start with Forbort and a 1st. A lot would depend on how Tampa perceives Forbort.

Seemed like there were a few reports throughout the year that behind the scenes things weren't rosey between Drouin and the front office. It was more or less leaked that Tampa would have given up Drouin to St. Louis for Shattenkirk if he would have agreed to an extension.

Even after the trade demand was rescinded, Drouin might have just been a headache.

As others mentioned, there were salary cap and expansion draft concerns. I think it was Bob McKenzie on his podcast a few weeks back that mentioned Johnson/Palat were more willing to take team friendly deals to help ice a better team. But Drouin wanted to get an expensive long term deal rather than short/cheaper bridge deal.

Tampa has a bunch of forward prospects in the pipeline, but not as much on the backend. So maybe they didn't get the best value, but it makes some sense for them in the long term.

I get the feeling a lot of people aren't seeing Sergachev's value though. Yes Drouin is the better package imo but landing a blue chip defensive prospect is good.

I think will be a top d in the NHL and what's not to like about him and Hedman being your #1 pairing.

Good for both teams but love it for the Bolts.

Haven't really followed too closely but why did TB want to get rid of Drouin in the first place? They really had more important pieces to sign?

Among other things, he has issues with Cooper (and according to Kucherov post season interview, he's not the only player. ) I think Yzerman knew since last year and Droiun's temper tantrum and other things that came out, that he wouldn't sign with them. Animosity there. And given the contracts he has to get to , and what on the horizon, it was his only move. And neither Palat or Johnson gets you Sergachev
