Stamkos with 1 ES goal in 17 games. Crazy.

Another team wasting time. Stamkos is 28 already. They're going to have to pay Kucherov next year. This is 3 of the last 4 years they've made at least the 3rd round, without winning. You only get so many kicks at the can.

Or so we think. Everyone wrote off Washington before the season started. Their 2 year window closed shut. Now there's a team that missed their chance to compete, and an expansion team, playing for the Cup. This is why the Kings aren't rebuilding, or trading Carter. Unless it made them better today. Outside of Ari/Buf, a Was/LV Final would've been one of the least predicted matchups out there. If you're waiting for the Kings to go in a different direction, don't. This is a cap world. Random things happen all the time now. The 7th and 8th seeds played in the 2010 eastern conference final. The Kings as the 8th seed. Vegas. The dead Caps. It keeps going on like that.

Be ready to be sold hope next year, because that's what is going to be sold.

Whoever wins and it will be a great story, but I have to go with Ovechkin and the Caps. I don't think Ovechkin gets the credit he deserves as an all-time great player in the NHL and I hope winning a Stanley Cup might change the false narrative that he isn't a big game player.

I totally agree, guy goes full tilt all the time and I'd like to see him rewarded. Not often a guy can be that hard a player without being dirty yet still be an all time great goalscorer.

Funny stat was always the one where only guys who could get 30 goals, 60 points, and 200+ hits were Ovechkin and Brown :P and like 2 years of Ladd.

Both teams touched the Conference trophies. They're both losing in the Stanley Cup Final!
Well, someone has to win, but instead of getting the actual Stanley Cup, they will be presenting one of these to the winning team's captain.

Not sure where you are going with this, is it:

A) Tampa Bay needs to start a rebuild
B) Every team is a contender every season
C) The Kings are just as talented and deep as the contending teams
D) All of the above

In this cap era, I think that any playoff team can be contenders for the year they make the playoffs, no one in Oct had a WSH vs VGS final, it was all NSH vs PIT, NSH vs TB, possibly Winnipeg etc,

In this era, the difference between a contender and not, is so small, as is the difference between a top 3 vs a top 6 vs a top 9 player

Forget October, nobody in April had these two teams in the final.

Probably D.

Maybe TB does need to rebuild. They can't seem to win with what they have. Stamkos had 6 points in the series, all on the PP. 2 consecutive shutouts. At least the Kings scored between their shutout losses.

Nobody picked Vegas to do what they've done this year, before or especially after the expansion draft. Washington was declared done, no cap space, had to get rid of guys for nothing, and added bottom level free agents on the cheap. I think their own current GM said they were done last summer.

What exactly is a contender? I don't know. Nashville made the Finals as the last playoff team. The Kings won as a middle of the road 8th seed. The Flyers made the Final in 2010 as the 7th or 8th seed, whatever they were. It is a random cap world. Make the playoffs, and if you get on a roll, you're a contender. The numbers for the Kings in their last 9 playoff games are awful, including an embarrassing 0-5 home record, but there's no reason that can't turn on a dime. It's not an impossible scenario that has to be created for it to happen. Nothing less impossible than Vegas and Washington anyway. If the right guys are engaged in the play, and you get any contribution from anyone else, boom, there you go.

Maybe this is just an outlier season, just full of craziness. Maybe things are back to something more normal next year. The Kings are married to their core though, so they're going to keep trying, and hope they get lucky with the stars aligning next April and May.

I wonder if they would entertain a Palat for Martinez type swap? Would LA? I don't know if Palat would gel with Kopitar, but he's clearly gifted offensively

Tampa has 7 D signed for next year plus they'll have to make a decision on former 1st rounder Slater Koekkoek. I suppose it wouldn't shock me if they were to move Coburn, but I feel like they would rather move a pick/prospect than an NHL piece like Palat.

I could maybe see in a year that they'll have to move one of their forwards when Kucherov needs his new deal. They have a couple wing prospects (Raddysh/Katchouk) turning pro next year who might be ready to push for NHL spots after some AHL time.

Possibly, but I doubt they are going to go into next season with the same pieces in place, Martinzez would be an upgrade over Girardi, even McDonagh the way he played etc,

Yeah, lots of guys would be upgrades over Girardi but Tampa/Yzerman seems to like him for whatever reason (maybe just fills the box for RH penalty killing D).

Yzerman's done an annoyingly fantastic job with their cap up to this point. As much as the loss hurts, I think he can make minor tweaks. They'll probably entrust Sergachev with more playing time next season as well.

Four of their D are UFA after next season. A Palat for D trade might make more sense for them in summer of 2019.
