Around the League '16-'17 Other Teams' Free Agent Frenzy

Yeah, lots of guys would be upgrades over Girardi but Tampa/Yzerman seems to like him for whatever reason (maybe just fills the box for RH penalty killing D).

Yzerman's done an annoyingly fantastic job with their cap up to this point. As much as the loss hurts, I think he can make minor tweaks. They'll probably entrust Sergachev with more playing time next season as well.

Four of their D are UFA after next season. A Palat for D trade might make more sense for them in summer of 2019.

He has, but he hasn't had to really pay anyone yet, other than Stamkos and Hedman, he signed Johsnon, but gave him a NTC, same with Palat, 5M and 5.8M, Kucherov is going to pretty much double what he makes, those three guys right there will be 27 million, add in Palat and Kucherov, that's 38 million tied up in 5 players, gonna have some serious moves to make coming up

Tampa has 7 D signed for next year plus they'll have to make a decision on former 1st rounder Slater Koekkoek. I suppose it wouldn't shock me if they were to move Coburn, but I feel like they would rather move a pick/prospect than an NHL piece like Palat.

I could maybe see in a year that they'll have to move one of their forwards when Kucherov needs his new deal. They have a couple wing prospects (Raddysh/Katchouk) turning pro next year who might be ready to push for NHL spots after some AHL time.

That depends on what he wants. the reason he got the bridge deal that high was because the LTC $$ asked were too much. Stevie Y will do whatever it takes to keep the team in the contender zone. But I don't think he can afford to mortgage the future on Kucherov, as much as I love his game. Unless Kucherov does the 'no state tax so I'll take less cash' that STamkos did.

UFA's I think will be gone - Kunitz, Sustr
RFA's that need contracts - JT Miller, Paquette, Erne, D man Koekkoek ,Namestnikov, and goalie Domingue

and July 1 Kucherov can ink a deal, if he wants. He may elect to wait and test the waters, if the feelers his agent gets back indicate the Bolts aren't prepared to cough up 8-10 m x 8 for him. Also Tyler Johnson's NTC kicks in on July 1, which is something they may consider. Brayden Pointe (who I think is terrific) is going into the last year of his ELC. They may opt to move Johnson and move Miller up to the 2nd line and use that money for Miller and Pointe's contracts.

Stevie Y doesn't usually stand pat, I think he'll make some moves.

Stamkos devastated, believed Lightning would win Stanley Cup

"Personnel will change regardless, whether it's just evolution year to year," Yzerman said. "How much it changes depends on what options, what opportunities are out there. It's difficult to change significantly for us at this stage. It's a challenge. We need to improve.
"My job this summer is, how do I improve this team? Is that through free agency? Is that through trades? Is that hopefully our young guys coming in next year, whoever that may be, and improving us? Or is this group the best option we have? You kind of look at everything."

I think trading Johnson is probably a good move. Kucherov is still an RFA when his deal expires, so Yzerman still have some leverage there, but the clock is ticking for Tampa Bay. Yzerman is going to have to continue to get cap hit discounts, which he may be able to do in 0% state income tax Florida. He must also replace good, but not great players, making high cap hits with younger players.

Interesting bits of info in this column,
John Tavares getting full-court press from Islanders - Sportsnet.ca
We probably won’t know the truth until training camp, but there is a chance Ryan Kesler does not play in 2018–19. Anaheim’s centre gutted through 48 regular-season and playoff games, his discomfort and pain obvious to teammates and opponents alike. From what I understand, he will not be having surgery (that’s been done). Instead, he’s undergoing some aggressive rehab and treatment in an effort to improve the hip area. The team and agent are not commenting, but word is he is not interested in retiring, wants to play and is doing everything he can to get there. But it might be a situation where he sits out and tries to come back in September 2019.

If there's one thing I admire about Kesler, it's that he wants to play badly and he wants to play hard. That sounds really damning for his future, he may just burn out like Stoll, body just gives up.

He's also another one of the guys in 2003 who have shown signs of diminishing talents due to their bodies taking a beating, Mike Richards being another example of this.

2003 NHL Entry Draft Picks at hockeydb.com

About half of those 30 names taken in the 1st round are still playing, and a number of them have also regressed or done with the NHL.

Hard to believe it's already been 15 years since that draft. I remember being at that draft party when all of these guys being called upon to walk on stage were 17-18 year olds.

I remember this one because I was married on the night before. Can’t believe Brown hasn’t regressed as much as some of the others.

Yeah, many of the 2003 guys, including Richards a few years ago [ although I think it was more concussion related] are breaking down. Even Perry is regressing so badly to the point that fans are talking about wanting to buy him out.

Out of all the players taken in the 2003 draft, Brown has played the 2nd most games. Only Staal has played more.

Brown, Getzlaf, Burns, Staal, Pavelski and Bergeron were the highest scoring players last year from that draft.

Say what you will about him, but DB is still hanging around and his career has show some pretty impressive longevity.

It does suck balls that the NBA and NHL have insane games scheduled basically at the same time. Gonna watch the hockey game with volume on the tele and the NBA game silenced on the monitor.

Dustin Brown will be another King in the Hall of Very Good when all is said and done. Solid career.

I don't think there's that much crossover between NHL and NBA fans though.

Personally I never watch the NBA and when sports shows start talking about the NBA I change the channel.
