Well, we've been saying the Kings need to go to the middle and fight around the net to get their scoring going for several seasons now. Sutter said it a lot and they didn't do it. Maybe they'll do it for Stevens.

But if there really are players unwilling to go to the dirty areas, can we unload them to someone else?

As long as you're willing to take equally flawed players back, sure.

Report: Tomas Tatar wants $6-7 million AAV

Tatar has reportedly rejected a five-year, $25 million offer from the Detroit Red Wings.

Tatar is instead looking for a six or seven-year deal in the range of $6 million to $7 million annually. He has an arbitration hearing slated for Thursday, so this matter could be settled then with a one-year deal. If that happens though, Tatar has suggested that would probably be his last season if Detroit, according to a Slovakian interview. Tatar had 25 goals and 46 points in 82 games last season.

Had a good year a few years back and has been pretty durable during his NHL career but that seems like a bunch of cake he is asking for.

I can see why both sides are not close.

I don't think Tartar should get more than a 4 or 5 year deal from any team. The players are trying to tack on extra cash by adding years to every deal. Most of them aren't worth the total amount of the contract.

STevie Y working some more magic , Palat signs 5 yrs at 5.3 per.

Triplet line at 15M, not bad.

But I guess he's still got to work some magic for whatever Kucherov will get. He's already a rising star.

even 5x5 is skirting it for Tatar. Asking for more dollars AND term is gutsy

It is and maybe he wants out of Motor city and that's his ticket. If it goes to arbitration, he'll sign for 1 yr and has already said that will be it for him. And in a lot of cases, there's a bit of bad blood left behind between Gm and player.

He's good , but not LTC at 6M plus good, not yet. And they have some good young forwards there and more coming up. Might be best for them to trade him and move on.

Tatar (DET): Club offer is $4.1M. Player ask is $5.3M

1 yr at 4.5 or 4.7 I'd guess.

STL has asked for a two-year deal on Parayko at $3.4M and $3.6M. He is asking for one year at $4.85. Still time for settlements.

Someone asked if RNH was a bust on trade rumors, and I said yes just to say it, and man, did Oilers fans' Jimmies get rustled.

Brian Dumoulin: PIT offer $1.95M. Player ask is $4.35M

He's a pretty good shutdown d, nothing fancy but doesn't have the offensive numbers that usually come with that kind of price tag. I see him in the 2.75 range.
Conor SHeary also in need of new paper and although he had a good year, you have to think playing as many shifts with Crosby as he did, he benefitted greatly.
And I'd guess Rutherford is eyeing the deals on the horizon for next year an how much money he wants to shell out this year.

Hornqvist has been very good for them and in addition to talent, has a bit of sandpaper to his game. He is among several contracts that expire next year. And he's turning 31 so you have to think that , along with some young guys coming off ELC's that need deals, will be a part of their decision.

To me Dumoulin is a young version of Niklas Hjalmarsson but bigger and slightly more physical. Hjalmarsson put up similar numbers when he was Dumoulin's age. I think he's easily worth 4M.

Jim Rutherford agrees, Pens signed him to 6 yrs at 4.1 per

and the Preds got Arvidsson with a good deal for them, 7 yrs and 4.25M per

The challenge for GM David Poile was making shrewd financial moves to ensure that core remained together, not only for another run or two with Pekka Rinne in goal but for the future.

To that end: He now has Viktor Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg, Roman Josi, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis signed for a combined $20.5 million cap hit through 2019. Which is rather incredible.

Arvidsson is only 24 years old. He will be 31 when his 7-year deal expires. Well done Poile.

Pearson and Toffoli are around the same age. Wish we could have locked them up to 7 year deals.

Some will point out that Pearson/Toffoli may not have wanted LTC's, which is possible, but it sure didn't seem like Blake pushed for longer term deals. If he didn't, it's a mistake IMO.

It would have cost more in the short term, but would have saved money in the long term assuming they both become consistent top 6 forwards.

I don't think either toffoli or Pearson wanted a LTC. they'll be 28/29 when their next contract kicks in. toffoli at least would have been signing a contract off an injury plagued down year. Not the best bargaining position in order to get paid.

Toffoli's agent would have advised him too not sign any long term deal, coming off a poor injury riddled season.

Pearson probably wouldn't have gotten offered anything more than 4 years.

Poile has done an excellent job signing those core players, all those deals will end when those guys are around 29-32 years old.

You're presenting your opinion as fact.

When Toffoli's deal expires he's a UFA. Assuming he's productive, he'll become either very expensive or we'll lose him.

Kings had leverage because both were RFA's. They could have pushed for longer term deals in exchange for high AAV (maybe they did), but regardless if you think these players are going to be productive these are not ideal contracts for LA.

And we're assuming he's productive.

Assuming he's not productive, a 7 year albatross contract is cut to 4 years.

Frankly the Kings just have too many long term contracts.

Zibanejad and NYR have a five-year extension

AAV is 5.35 M.

Seems a bit high, but I guess now that he'll be on the first line, taking Stephan's place, he'll get more ice time and PP time. He's only 24 so hopefully he'll grow into the top center they need.
