yes and no. Yes, they are making calls, they are at almost 79M and have 19 forwards signed. JVR and Bozak are the 2 forwards that are at the top of their move list. That will get them 8.5 back and they need to sign Connor Brown (expected at about 2.25 or so) ANd they want a d, that's no secret. But they have the summer to work that out.

I dunno, I think he gets more. had a real solid season. Wonder if they buy some free agent years and it pushes the number up.

Lou said recently on Sportsnet radio he is happy with the look of the club and doesn't see anymore moves but he said they would not make a splash in free agency prior to it commencing and look how that turned out. :laugh:

One thing about the Leafs is they are pretty tight lipped so if you hear something it's probably not true. They don't let stuff get out.

Coyotes hire Tocchet as head coach

It's official in the desert.

ESPN mentioned hfboards in an article. ESPN lurks here.

A month ago, hockey fans at HFBoards.com engaged in a lively debate about which teams had open Stanley Cup windows, closed Stanley Cup windows, or opening or closing Cup windows. About one-third of the 31 teams were gauged to have "open" windows, with the Penguins, Nashville Predators, Senators, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Capitals mentioned most often.

Great signing by the Canes, getting Jacob Slavin for 7yrs at 5.3 per .

They have a ridiculous wealth of talented young d. A very young and deep d that will grow into elite. Hanifin, Faulk, Slavin and Pesce, pretty decent young top 4. I watched a lot of their games last year and this kid was good, didn't show much first year jitters . Pesce was good for them and I really like Hanifin, who was given additional ice time and responsibility after Hainsey was traded and thrived. Getting TVR will upgrade their bottom pairing.

Slavin, 23, posted career highs in points (34), goals (5), assists (29) and shorthanded points (4) during his first full NHL season in 2016-17. The Erie, CO, native led the Hurricanes in blocked shots (161), takeaways (83), time on ice per game (23:26) and shorthanded time on ice per game (3:07), and was tied for first in plus/minus with a plus-23 rating, the fourth-best plus/minus season in franchise history. Slavin ranked second in the NHL in takeaways, first among league defensemen in shorthanded points and tied for 10th among league blueliners in plus/minus

Slavin, Faulk, Hanifin and Pesce is filthy. And that's not including Fleury and McKeown coming up soon.

They are loaded with prospects, Ron Francis, much like he did as a player, very quietly doing consistent good work as GM. He's gotten some pretty good forwards as well in the draft (Gauthier last year and NEcas this year) . But their stable of d is impressive. Last year, with one of their first rounders they got a pretty talented speedy d in Jake Bean. That's a lot of young d talent.
THat's why they can make those calls about upgrading at center, they have the top colts in the stable to do so.

7 years @ $5.3 after 1 full season? Very risky IMO. Too pricy for my liking. Hope he continues to progress or this is gonna be a horrible contract that will result in a buyout.

Their D is nasty deep. Jake Bean will be something special too they have Fleury and Mckeown too that's 6 Dmen who are top 4 dmen or have top 4 dmen potential and 1 (Mckeown) who will be a great serviceable dman as well who can grow into a top 4.

They have Necas , Aho , Lindholm, Rask, Skinner also made great trades picking up Tervainen , TVR , Zykov to add more depth throughout the lineup. They have Staal , Kruger who will be solid in whatever role they're put in. Darling as goalie . They got Williams back they're on their way to the playoffs .

Carolina does look good but they are soft as hell. I agree the league is heading toward more speed and skill but you have to have some grit, they have none. Not sure how they will hold up in the playoffs. The Ducks, Preds, Pens, Oilers, and Caps all have speed, skill and size.

Carolina is building the right way, but they're overrated because this is HF. They'll likely finish in the bottom half of the league again this year.

Also, Hanafin really isn't good right now. Brought into the NHL too early. Shouldn't be in the league.

Larry Brooks was on the Power Play on XM yesterday. God that guy is a terrible interview. Every question he answered with I don't know and then some smartass response. Brutal interview!

Couldn't agree more. ANd I watch alot of hockey, thanks to NHL Center ICe, I watch a game(s) every night. I've seen them play and they're very good. What stopped them last year was no backup goalie (lost at least 18 pts Lack/Leighton) Ward at one point started 16 in a row, he was good but that's too many for him. Darling/Ward a great duo. The other thing is getting a #1 center and they are trying to get Duchene.

Although I think they can finish 4th, in the Metro, I don't know if that's enough. Toughest div in the NHL. But they are being built the right way and a team on the rise.

Ron Cook of the Pitts Post Gazette thinks that Phil Kessel’s days as a Pen are numbered. He reasons that there is issues between Kessel and the coach as well as Malkin. That with Rick Tocchet gone, the buffer is now gone. That is something I’ve heard pretty much since Tocchet got there, he’s very very good with the players, and they respond to him. Kessel said Tocchet was the best Asst’ coach he ever had. As was pointed out in the article, the only thing Kessel can do is score, and 23 goals in 82 games is not enough.

Habs made an offer to Mark Streit, 1 yr, 1.5. Good deal if he takes it. Gives them a Vet presence with Markov potentially gone.

Friedman’s 30 thoughts

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-summer-market-matt-duchene-still-open/

Pretty good read. In part of the opening statement, he speaks to how when top line forwards (Toewes, Kane, Kopi) get 10M but each had won multiple cups. MacDavid got 12M and hasn’t done that yet, and therein could be a difference for agents using a new measuring stick. That last year, the magic number for second contracts was 6.

One year ago, the number was six. Not “The Six,†just six. Young, emerging stars were getting that on their second contracts. Filip Forsberg landed square on $6M. Mark Scheifele came in at $6.125M, Nathan MacKinnon $6.3M, Sean Monahan $6.375M and Johnny Gaudreau $6.75M. That area looked to be “the new normal†for this group.
It lasted barely 12 months.

Now with MacDavid over 12M, will that number shift to 8 to 8.5 M range?

Buffalo GM Jason Botterill is in talks with Jack Eichel’s representatives about an extension, and that should give everyone a good idea of where we’re going. It will be instructive. Let’s say you’re going to argue the next tier should be $4M below the highest level. Before, that was $6.5M. Now, it’s $8.5M.

“They are going to be saying, ‘I know I’m not Connor McDavid, but I’m not $6M worse than Connor McDavid,†said agent number three.

One agent speculates that giving that kind of money to elite players will dissolve the middle class. That more than half the roster will be signed around the minimum in order to afford price tags in the 12M range.

1. One thing a few different NHL executives agree on: Offer sheets are coming. Cam Fowler, Martin Jones, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Price are gone from next year’s unrestricted class. “There simply are not enough impact players available in free agency,†one said. “If you need to improve your team — and fast — it’s going to be your best option.â€

15. (too long to copy here) Dwight King has had feelers from some WC teams and is looking to lose some weight, usually 230, is aiming for 225. Feels WC style is better for him

17. Stevens says there will be a difference in the way the Kings play.
“You bet, it’s not a secret. We have the puck a lot, our top guys take ownership that if they don’t have it they are working to get it back. But we don’t do enough in the middle of the ice, creating scoring chances or driving from there. It will be a huge focus on our hockey team. We need to grab the attention of our players to create offence in front of the net and inside the dots. We will challenge some players to be a bit uncomfortable in their games.â€

18. Stevens added he feels good about bounceback years for Kopitar, Brown and Jake Muzzin.
“I saw some promise in (Brown’s) game at the end of last year. He may not necessarily be a 30-goal scorer again, but I am comfortable with what I think he can do.â€

27. Really long and covers the CBA, NHLPA option to reopen in 2019, which EF feels they’ll do and details on CBA related stuff.

Off topic but I've been a huge fan of Couturier since he was drafted (and still pissed off that homer and co ruined his development) That said, his IQ is off the charts. He's just that smart
And those numbers, he is usually pitted vs the other teams top lines and esp in defensive zone faceoffs. He draws the toughest assignments.

Alexander Appleyard‏ @avappleyard 4h4 hours ago

This is pretty ridiculous

Since start of 16-17 5v5:

Flyers with Couturier on ice: +14
Flyers without Couturier on ice: -36

It's also the reason why they struggle when he's out hurt.

http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/the-latest-reported-contract-numbers-for-tomas-tatar

Tatar's camp has rejected a five-year offer of $5 million per season, wanting six or seven years at closer to $6 million a season, a source said.

Says neither side willing to budge. He'll most likely sign a 1yr deal and move on next summer, unless they trade him.

Given their kids and upcoming contracts, I wouldn't sign him to a LTC either, he'd have 4 yrs on the other side of 30.

`````
Rutherford on the Kessel trade rumors
this is the tail end of his statement (starts with the 'he's an important part of the team, scores big goals. etc)
“He's an important part. I don't want to sit here and say that a certain player's not going to get traded at some point in his career. I mean, Phil already did. But that's not something that I foresee happening right now.”
Being diplomatic but not exactly a ringing endorsement
Boston Bruins too many long-in-the-tooth deals
Krecji - 31 with 4 more yrs at 7.2M
Chara - 40, 1 yr left 4M
Bergeron- turning 32 5 yrs left 6.87M
Backes - 33 , 4 yrs left 6M
Marchand 29 , 7 yrs left 6.1M
Pastrnak, not signed yet and 2 very high end D in Carlo and McAvoy who will need new contracts 2 yrs from now, entering last yr of ELC's.
Kind of handcuffs them, trying to trade an aging player with term like that.
Well, we've been saying the Kings need to go to the middle and fight around the net to get their scoring going for several seasons now. Sutter said it a lot and they didn't do it. Maybe they'll do it for Stevens.
But if there really are players unwilling to go to the dirty areas, can we unload them to someone else?
That Backes deal...yuck.
I'm looking forward to a full year of McAvoy. Could he be this years Werenski or Ghost? Kid is uber talented.
