Around the League 15-16 Part 3

I still don't understand why the Pacific is so bad. These teams shouldn't have fallen off THAT much since last season, even with rational explanations.

The Ducks are better than their start. They have a 2-6-1 record against the Central teams, most of which came during the start they had. They're almost back to .500. Edmonton is 0-6-1 against the Central, so .500 against everyone else. Plus they're the Oilers, and still have a ways to go. And of course McDavid is hurt. The Central is better than the Pacific, but just those 2 teams account for a 2-12-2 record.

Calgary, they were 18-2 against the Oilers, Coyotes, Kings, and Sharks last year. They were 18-2 against those 4 teams, and still only made the playoffs by a couple points. 10-0 against Edmonton and Arizona. Not even 1 fluke loss in OT. That said, yes, they'll still probably beat the Kings with a last minute 3rd period goal in LA. That's just standard stuff at this point.

The Pacific isn't as bad as it's been so far. It's the only division without a 30 point team as of today, but things will even out a bit.

Trade Bait: Ryan Johansen?

Darren Dreger on Insider Trading said that Ryan Johansen is 'softly in play' that although Kekalainen is not openly shopping him, he is listening to offers.

Frank Seravalli also had that rumor on TSN added that there could be 'enduring discord" there since the holdout on the bridge deal. He's got 1 yr left at 4M cap (6 M salary) but has already missed 2 games this year due to 'lack of energy' and has gotten off to a bad start with Torts, was demoted on Sat to the 4th line.
He had 71 pts in 82 games last year.

Yeah, pretty much old news here. I'm sure CBJ is tired of this guy's tired act.

That's exactly, it. The 'act' of behaving like a spoiled child, and to have the talent he possess and ruin it with bad attitude. It was going south with Todd Richards last year and I guess they're done with his tantrums. I wonder what he was asking for on his new contract.

I wonder if Nashville would take a chance on him?

I don't think Nashville will need him after they trade for Kopitar. :naughty:

Nashville has the d that columbus needs too

Everyone is talking a Seth Jones for Johansen deal, which would make sense for both sides.

"Everyone' might be saying that but Nashville won't . Jones is a stud, just turned 21 and with the young talent on that team, a part of their future, a big part. When WEber went down in the playoffs last year, Jones was solid, confident, very mature, beyond his years in a critical situation in the pressure cooker of the SC playoffs. He never flinched or shied away from the responsibilty that was thrust on him, he excelled. That's leadership and not someting you can coach or teach, you either have it or you don't and he has it is spades. Weber at 31, would go before Jones would. He's been very very good and not just the numbers he's put up in his first 2 years. He good in all 3 zones, and there isn't much he can't do and do well.
He's not going anywhere, excpet to put his name on an LTC at about 6 M per .

Yes I agree with Dee here, Nashville would have to be brain dead to deal away Seth Jones, especially for a guy that has shown to be a concern two seasons in a row for wildly different reasons.

Well the Preds still need a 1C and there's not many available, the tempermental Johansen would still be a #1 on that team. You can build the best goaltending and D corps in the league and it doesn't mean **** if you don't have at least one legit #1 center. They'll get no where in the playoffs once again because of it.

I think most NHL analysts and fans would agree that the Preds do need a # 1C , and they might put a package together for Johansen, but it won't include Jones.

Maybe they outta pitch Weber for Malkin. Maybe they trade for Staal at the deadline and take a chance. Kamenev (who is similiar to Malkin in style) will turn 20 this summer and might make their squad next year.

Not pragmatic, wrong word. I meant temperamental.

Anyways, I hope the trade doesn't happen. Let Nashville keep hoarding good young defenseman while the rest of their roster suffers.

Kevin Westgarth, the international hockey stud, playing for the Belfast
Giants was banned for actions conducted during a skirmish with a Cardiff Devils defenseman.

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey/belfasts-kevin-westgarth-banned-over-8639503

“Westgarth continued to throw multiple punches to the back of the head and body of Hendrikx while he was in a vulnerable position and unable to defend himself covered up on the ice.

“This is a reckless action with no regard for the opposition player’s safety. There is an apparent injury to Hendrikx.â€

Was Westgarth an English major or something? I highly doubt he is making the amount of money he could here in America with a Princeton degree.

Instead he's playing for a ****** team and ****** league in Britain when he could probably be having more fun in beer league here with an actual job.

Banned = 1 game suspension

You know you're career is near the end when you're playing for Belfast. Isn't that where Theo Fleury finished his career?

YEah, Belfast isn't exactly the bastion of hockey. Fleury did play there for 1 yr and according to wikipedia:
Fleury argued with visiting fans,[92] as well as officials, which led him not to return to Belfast in 2006–07
Nothing like wearing out your welcome

it went on to say he played for the STeinbach North Stars (?) in 2008 and attempted and NHL comeback in 2009 with Calgary, played during preseason retired again...in Sep 2009. His oldest son is 28...THeo was a busy boy in high school.

Puck Daddy (i know) saying they could see richards in San Jose.

That was out there for awhile, one of the TSN podcast guys suggested that about a month ago for the DeBeour connection and the fact the Sharks need somebody with his leadership and tenacity, (7-0 in games 7's) , something they miss. SHarks were one of a half dozen teams they 'heard' were interested, said 4 were deep playoff teams. DIdn't mention the others, only spoke of the past connection and trust factor with DeBeour and how that would be benefiical, etc.

But I don't think he'll go anywhere this year, because he didn't sign a plea deal, he is fighting the charges and (just a hunch, nothing I've read) I have feeling on Dec 8th, when the lawyer appears in court with him ,the judge will set a new date, given how backed up courts are, it could be spring.
But maybe not, maybe it's settled that day, it's just that the legal system is usually drawn out.
I hope for his sake, it's resolved next month but I feel not.

Eklund 'hears' all kinds of things, a few days back, he 'was hearing that' the Flyers were 'in' on a package deal for Ladd and Byfuglien.. That is winceably bad, for a lot of reasons, leading of which is paying G and Jake 17M already, you really have room for 13 more? AFter Hexy keeps saying he won't trade for older players, not part of his plans, only to make the team younger and faster.

I think Dec 8th maybe telling. If it is delayed maybe some sort of travel agreement can be put in place so that he can play this season.

Odd Flyers rumour (eklund). I would think Voracek would be going the other way.

Wouldn't trade Jake for either Ladd or Byf. He's younger and a more skilled player. But I can see trading Jake for a player of equal value. I like Jake, , and he's having a crappy start, but not of lack of trying , shots on goal like crazy. Works hard most shjifts, etc.
The thing is this new system had really thrown them for a loop. Lowest scoring team in the nHL . They are all struggling and it's showing. And it can't be easy knowing you have to play every game and you know you're not a playoff team.
Simmonds has been awful, and made the mistake of saying (something that would have been better served to stay in the Locker room) to the media that he's having a hard time adjusting to the system because he has t0 'stop and think about what he's doing too much'.
This is a college system for young, speedy skaters, not meant for a team like this, esp with porous defense and forwards who can't win battles or have that kind of speed.

I do think Hexy will be trading some of these players, to get picks and prospects, build for the future. I've heard he's taking calls on Mason , who is new to the 'trade' list of the usual suspects. I think he knows this team is realistically 3 yrs min. out of being a team that could go on a run and needs to look to that.
