Karlsson is a joy to watch and having the puck on your stick all the time, is defense as well. However, he's listed as a defender and I dont view him like one.

I cant imagine there are no great, speedy forwards with good hands who could do the same when transformed to a defender.

Karlsson is like a Swedish Mike Green who was in his prime.

I'd argue Green was a supporting player (a very good one) on an offensive powerhouse team while Karlsson is the one doing most of the driving on his. But yeah, it's hard to justify giving him an award for best all-round ability as a defenseman when he isn't that good at a very important part of it. That being said, I love watching him play and what he's doing is really special.

I agree they are not comparable. Karlsson is more gifted.

Green's best asset was his wrist shot on the PP. Its hard to imagine he scored 31 goals and still missed 14 games that season.

So, say he were to finish top 5 in the NHL in scoring as a d-man (currently sits 5th), would you be ok with him being in contention for the Hart or Lindsay?

It's been over 20 years since a d-man was top 10 in scoring, and over 30 years since a d-man was a top 5 in scoring.

Is it okay if he finishes top 5 in scoring and literally worst in the league in goals against? How can you make a case for 'best defenseman' for a guy who is only deployed offensively and cant defend, especially when his lead over the next defenseman is two points? His offense doesn't supersede his complete lack of defense.

I would feel better about him winning MVP than the Norris, tbh. He IS the heartbeat of that team and a hell of a lot of fun to watch, but the narrative about "oh look points" is completely worthless when he can't keep the puck out of his own net and frequently looks foolish trying.

Keep in mind I'm talking about this year in particular. Last year down the stretch he was phenomenal, and his first norris at least was well-deserved. It's very unfortunate he was injured.

I have no doubt that if you kept Doughty off the PK (Fresh for offense), deployed him strictly offensively and gave him free reign to do whatever the hell he wanted on offense with reckless abandon...bad pinches, go behind their net, you name it...that he could put up shiny numbers. Keith too. Klingberg is already doing it.

Viktor Tikhonov on waivers.. A pretty decent bottom six option, right? Two way player and all that... liked his game in Phoenix, no idea how he's been doing in Chicago. I guess being put on waivers isn't a good sign.

Sounds like it was a move to bring up Bickell. But I do recall us wanting to draft him, no clue how high we're on him since, but can't be that bad as center depth right?

Wasn't the rumor that the Kings had him in mind with the Voynov pick but the Coyotes traded up and snatched him? I seem to remember something about Lombardi ending an interview abruptly when finding out what was transpiring.

I don't think top 5 in scoring would be good enough to get into the Lindsay/Hart picture, honestly. It's certainly exceedingly rare for a D-man to get there, but I think ultimately a forward wins out for both. But that's the fickleness of voting.

For instance, my opinion on the Norris means nothing. Karlsson will win more.

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun

- Drew Doughty is 28th in scoring amongst NHL defenceman, which means once again he won’t get a lot of Norris Trophy consideration. Which, of course, is wrong. The voters prefer point-scoring defencemen like Erik Karlsson or John Klingberg. Doughty is second in the NHL in minutes played and Los Angeles has given up the fewest goals in the league. To me, he’s the best in the league again.

In Doughty's career he is going to win another Cup with the Kings. I truly believe he will get at least one more.

Also I see at least one Conn Smythe in Doughty's future. Doughty is too good come playoff time, to not win one.

Both this season.

Watching the Isles Senators game and I seriously don't know how Karlsson gets all these points. Dude got an assist on a play Doughty does every game. I believe it's gotta be the East and the terrible goaltending on that side of the nation.

The East in general fails at Defense.

Karlsson wins it in overtime against the Isles. Prepare yourselves when you enter the main boards...

Just like that 3 more points. No points for 2 and half periods and scores the game winning goal in overtime and assists on the first and game tying goals. Just give him the Norris, Hart, Vezina, Pearson, Calder, Conn Smythe, give it all to him I'm speechless. Eastern Conference is garbage.

Hoping Tampa takes it to San Jose tonight to widen that gap a little more.

See, that was a fantastic game by Karlsson.

...apparently it also erases all the other garbage from every other game, like the 3.11 ga/60, good for rank 210 out of 224 defenseman that have played a game this season. Take out the single-digit games and he's the 8th worst GA/60 d-man in the league, with fully offensive assignments and just about no PK time.

Great, he can play offense---just enough to cover his defense.
