Freak accidents will happen. Much greater risk of being killed in a car accident. Should government mandate helmets in cars? How about nomex suits? Both would save many more lives than neck guards.

Agreed, this is asinine. If a player is concerned he can don a neck guard, if I driver is concerned, they can don a helmet.

I'm thinking there's not one person that actually plays/ed in the NHL that agrees with this guy. Not even the unfortunate ones that it happened to.

Edit: Especially the ones that wear bling on their necks for games. It would cover their coolness.

I think what he suggests is over the top, but let's not forget, most hockey players didn't even wear helmets back in the 70's, goalies didn't wear masks at all, and now everyone does. I don't think it should be mandated, but anything to help the players from getting hurt I'm in favor of. You have to also keep in mind the NHLPA always has their two cents worth of input.

You might be surprised. No players wanted to wear helmets, until they found out that their brain might get scrambled much easier that with a helmet.

No players wanted to wear helmets

Pro hockey players have endured literally thousands of concussions and other head injuries, therefore , helmets are reasonable. Dieing from having your carotid artery slashed by a skate blade is less likely than winning Powerball. What happened is tragic, but mandatory neck guards is not the logical response.

So did anyone see the video that caused this guy’s death? Because the player that caused this should be in jail. Craziest thing in hockey I’ve ever seen.

Oh man. No hadn’t seen it. I just watched it. Bone achingly horrifying. I feel it in my marrow. Really, really hard to watch.

It’s also homicide. That dude fully intended to kick him. It’s somewhere between 2nd degree murder and manslaughter. Why has everyone been calling this a freak accident? He kung fu flying kicked him. 100% intentionally.

Dude….amazing. I can’t even believe it. I thought it was a freak thing and watched it and could not believe what I watched. Why is no one saying anything about this? People are saying that this is an African American hockey player and so one is wanting to call attention to it. I’m not sure I really buy that…I don’t really play into the online race baiting game, and I really hope our society is better than that. But honestly what gives here? This guy should be charged with manslaughter 100% it’s not even debatable. Unless he had a seizure and his legs just all of a sudden spasmed up into the he guy’s head. Unreal.

You can’t see the guys skin color in the video or anything. I wouldn’t have known the two guys were different races. But if I’m cynical I would think that would cause more sensationalism. I’d think it would be talked about more because of the engagement levels going up. Not sure why them being different races would be a cause for less rather than more attention. It’s sad but true that these things get more attention this way.

But there’s no chance at all that he didn’t swing his leg up at him on purpose. That couldn’t be more clear. There’s just no way on earth his leg does that in this situation without his brain being involved. Can’t happen. Not possible. He kicked on purpose.

Yeah I don’t know honestly…just seen a few people mention that but I’m at a loss. People are on Twitter calling this “an unfortunate sequence of events.” Wtf did you not watch what I watched?!

I've not seen the video and probably will not but from what I've read it seems like a freak accident and not intentional. The dude who did it was crying on the ice and had to be helped off. A horrible tragedy, loss of a relatively young life and the guy whose skate cut him is going to be scarred for life.

You should really watch it…I would like as many opinions as possible.

Looks like this guy has also been previously suspended for jabbing players with his stick and abusing officials…and led the league in penalty minutes. So a definite lack of impulse control it seems…which is exactly what I saw on that play.

Stan Makita, originally helmetless created his own helmet, fashioned after the Marietta design…. No one forced him.
You are correct, but the NHLPA and the NHL changed all that. The NHL is a physical sport with a high potential of injury with all the players being employees of the club, you have to do the best to protect them from injury and protect yourself from lawsuits in this crazy world.

I didn't say it should be.

I just watched a video of the incident and it does look intentional. Hard to believe someone playing a sport would even think to do something like this intentionally.

Wow apparently “police are investigating.” Whatever that means…
That's not unusual.

I can’t find the video anywhere.
YouTube.

Kids wear neck guards. I don’t know why adults don’t. Also somewhere along the way goalies stopped wearing the plastic guard that hung from the bottom of their mask.

Because athletes get comfortable with their kit and don't want to change.

In 2001, Dale Earnhardt didn't want to wear a full-face helmet or wear a HANS (head and neck restraint) device, even after there was an avalanche of evidence that both would significantly reduce the odds of serious injury or death in a NASCAR crash. He paid for it with his life. They became mandatory within a year.

In the NHL, there are still players who won't wear face shields. They're grandfathered in because the league doesn't want to be unpopular or mess with their manly ethos. Even with the face shields on, the players adjust them so that they're useless - look at Connor Bedard, who has his pushed up onto his helmet like a pair of douchebro sunglasses.

Neck protection exists, as do ear guards on the helmets, skate guards, and face cages to deflect pucks. The players don't wear any of that stuff as a rule, because they don't want to look like p***yes to their peers.

Can't fix dumb.

I won't watch it. If it's as clear as what you and rt are saying, then I don't understand why this isn't being covered or why the guy hasn't been arrested.

Obviously I don’t know what he was thinking, but Instant regret and massive amounts of fear and anxiety is real. “What have I done?!?” is real. If you watch the video (it’s horrific so I don’t recommend it) you’ll see a him make a choice to kick Johnson. I don’t think he thought it through.

Yes, this exactly. I want to be clear that I don’t think there was any intent to actually kill someone here…but there was an obvious out of the way intent to injure, and the guy showed a complete lack of impulse control in my opinion…and seems to have a history of it.

It’s horrific and looks to be intentional.

Awful, just awful.

I have not seen the incident and have no intention of ever seeing it but this is the first person with a voice I have seen yet question the actions of the offender.
