Hey the record is what it is. There are no major 'wins' under his belt, but some pretty brutal losses. I suppose it's a cup half full/empty sort of argument though, those who think he's some sort of a wunderkid won't accept it. I just chuckle though that every time the GM eventually gets the hook, eeeeeeveryone will pile on. You just watch.
btw, not arguing the Timmins trade is looking good - it is... but will he become a major piece for this team? we'll see.
Signing Bunting wasn't a major win?

Trying to spin the Muzzin trade into anything other then a win is peak brain melt. Grundstrom is a 4th line player destined for the waiver wire in the not so distant future. Durzi is a 3rd pairing PP specialist and one of the worst defensive defensemen in the entire league...the exact kind of defensemen we don't need and Bjornfot has 4 points in 25 games at the AHL level this season....I mean he has potential but he isn't exactly looking like the second coming.

100%. It hurts to lose these players, but I doubt Durzi was in anyone top ten prospects list at the time of the trade. It worked out for both teams. Barbanov, highly doubt that anyone was up in arms at the time of the trade. Marchment, I remember it was 50/50 but hindsight is 20/20.

Also, Dubas has done a pretty good job replacing the likes of Grundstrom, Durzi, don’t know much about Bjornfot, and others. He’s brought in a lot of the pieces that are contributing on a top 3 team in the nhl.

Ie. Timmins, Murray, Samsonov, Kampf, Sandin, Robertson, Holmberg. Aside from our high first rounders, that’s a pretty good haul. Not sure what his role was with Lilijgren but that’s another piece.

The Leafs finally capitalized on their structure / culture to bring in a guy that was underperforming. It was the perfect scenario for both the team and player. High upside with good systems = huge W for Dubas.

Not to mention, we’re not operating in a vacuum. Some of these other trades open up opportunities for our younger guys.

Mo
Brodie
Gio
Liljegren
Timmins
Sandin
Niemela ( if leaf brass thinks he is ready )
Muzzin ?

Who do you trade
These are all nhl defensemen

To me
Sandin or Brodie ( just because of his cap hit)

Liljegren is a top pairing dman in my eyes.

None of them?

Muzzin might be done. Niemela probably sees some AHL time. If he's ready and has to spend a half year in the AHL oh well. It'll be good for him. So you're down to 6 already. Kral need waivers so can be a 7th. Brodie and Gio are UFA after that so there's lots of room for Niemela then

I think calling Durzi (averaging over 20min/game in his first full season) a 3rd pairing D is a bit much. I'll agree that Grundstrom doesn't look like a player he was hyped up to be though, his ceiling seems to be 3rd line at this point. Then again, we didn't get a whole lot of mileage out of Muzzin either - don't recall him playing anything close to a full season in his time here and we're all pretty much hoping he retires at this point. Hardly a win when you factor in the price. I said in another post that Muzzin was the element our D was missing, but it's not like his addition made much of a difference come playoff time.

I mean Durzi might be playing that much a night but he absolutely should not be. He has been getting absolutely caved in defensively. He is a guy that should be getting heavily sheltered on a 3rd pairing and get PP time. Which is of no use to us.

I'd trade Reilly....for various reasons...we can win without him, we're better defensively & we get rid of his cap hit. Thats just my take...

Getting 4 years of a top-pairing defenseman at a good cap hit and only losing a late 1st and two mid-tier prospects cannot be described as anything other than a win, and that doesn't change just because we didn't get even more, due to freak injury. Also he played 95% of the games in 2020-2021, and all of his games with us in 2018-2019, and he was great in the playoffs.
