The biggest takeaway from this is that TB had a number of deep playoff runs prior to their cup wins, including THREE losses in the conference finals and one loss in the SC final

Everyone talking like TB went from first round losses to juggernaut when in reality they have been making deep runs for a while now

We do they same one and done every season without fail

Right. They lost to the cup champs three years (2015, 2016, 2018) in either the finals or semis and made it to game 7 of the semis and then later the finals without Stamkos. This Leafs group is maybe the Minnesota Wild-East and even that's pretty generous.

I am sitting on the fence about the core right now.

The main pieces have been here for five failure seasons.

We have shuffled almost every secondary piece possible, bolstered the defence, even brought in a new goalie.

If we don't have a solid run in the playoffs this year there is no way you don't trade at least one of the core pieces

Do you really consider the first two playoff loses as failures?

It was "common knowledge" that Tampa was a regular season team and playoff paper tiger.

oh FFS.........give it a rest with your "common knowledge" nonsense.

Looks like a damn good playoff team to anyone with an ounce objectivity.

Imagine moving Matthews one of the best players in the league.
People are ridiculous. Only in Toronto would we be like we should trade the reigning rocket winner because 'think of the return' imagine how many firsts we could get for him!

I think that this year, especially the playoffs, was awful to watch for everyone involved.

I also think cooler heads should prevail, and we'll see what this team looks like next year.

What magical trade actually makes sense for the long term?
The playoffs were great as usual.
This team is too timid to compete.
Shannahan/Dubas/Keefe/Engvall/Kerfoot/Marner must go.
If you can’t see that, I gotta ask ; do you actually Watch Hockey or just opine on Hockey.
Big Difference.

100% correct approach. You don't f*** with the division winner who took the present SCF finalist to 7 games -- and was the only team to win more than 1 game against them in the playoffs.
Please.
You think winning the terribly weak North means anything?
And.
A complete collapse in the first round means everything is good?
Wow.
Never heard a true fan who accepts such awful results so easily.

I don’t think you understood my point. And you’re being a jerk about it for no reason.

The Leafs were hard to watch this year. Especially in the playoffs.

I don’t agree that your random list of scapegoats needs to go, but changes definitely need to happen.

I don't think they have much choice.

Matthews is an excellent regular season player, who will hopefully learn to succeed in the playoffs, as well as being the star and main attraction, so they really can't trade him.

Nylander is our best playoff performer, on a somewhat reasonable contract.

Marner is so badly overpaid that any trade involving him wouldn't return value, and probably wouldn't help our cap.

Tavares, the one we should trade, we can't.

Also, I think I'd rather stand pat than let Dubas make more mistakes.

Yup, at this point I’m just waiting for Dubas to be fired (Shanahan too) nothing changes until these malcontents are removed from the equation.

IMO the biggest takeaway about Tampa's success is that the first cup was won *12 years* after they drafted their star C #1 OA, and even 9 years after Kucherov.

Their core is older than the Leafs by quite a lot, and they were disappointment f***ups until very recently.

It was "common knowledge" that Tampa was a regular season team and playoff paper tiger.

Tampa was not a playoff paper tiger.

Their core went to the cup final in its second year together. They just couldn't take that final step because Stamkos kept getting injured.

In comparison, the Leafs can't even win a round.

Not only are they sticking with the core but they're sticking with the same coaches the same management and the same periphery players like Simmonds/Holl/Dermott/Kerfoot. They'll be forced to lose one guy to expansion or they would've kept him too.

Man I dunno how this Leafs mgmt has brought so much job security and confidence to themselves to fail badly and still not have to make changes and be this confident with what they have.

this core is rotten. tampa had leaders at every level, starting at the top. we have kyle dubas lmao
Letting dubas negotiate contracts is just wrong
I mean I think he only has 2 years left on his contract
Bring in some help

I don't think they know how to fix it
Or aren't willing to - wouldn't want to upset anybody

Scanning the 31 teams around the league with a true #1 defenceman...

How many were traded-for? Drafted? Signed UFA?

That sample of outcomes will give you at least some indication of how possible it will be for the Leafs to land one, and through which avenue.
I think though that we have one in the making in Sandin. And I still feel Lily is going to be a late bloomer. But the win now environment is restricted their opportunities, which is completely understandable.
