I think sticking with the core is unfortunately the right play here. The disappointment is the coach and style of play. If we stick with that...we are just wasting time.

I'm fine with Dubas making the move, but I know I'm in the minority at the moment.

I don't think you "win" a Marner trade, but you generate assets and opportunity to build a more aligned lineup going forward.
In the hands of a qualified GM, trading two of the four would instantly put this team on the road to success, just need ownership to realize this before it’s too late.

Yeah, hes a bum, barely better ppg than Jack Eichel and over 1.00ppg..

Who needs bums like him.

Maybe they can trade him for some magic beans errr draft picks.

It's funny that nm who we picked that year outside of McDavid you would not be happy... Oh wait actually include McDavid you would still not be happy with him lol
I’ve been a fan of Mitch since jr. I also was all for drafting him. But who cares about ppg. It’s all about finding a balance of players that can play in high stakes playoff situation. This isn’t nhl21. That’s 11M dollars that can’t play playoff hockey. If it’s not Mitch moved, it has to be one of the big contracts.

The chances of winning a Marner trade are unlikely in the terms of what people expect a win is.

You aren’t getting Slavin/Aho for Marner.
Doubt you’d even get Aho.

Boston didn’t win the Thornton trade. They probably could have got a better return but they weren’t going to win.
What they did get was the ability/cap to sign Chara/Savard and draft Kessel. A change to the dynamic of the team.

Marner most likely doesn’t pay dividends over night but again changes the cap allocation, the depth and type of players at other positions.

But again, before that, to protect the core, a new GM can send a powerful message to the group. What do they have to worry about when they can play the way they want and be guaranteed to try again next time without change or repercussions?

That’s why a GM change is important. Someone who has team above individual. There seems to be little to no accountability under Dubas. It’s ok, group hug people.

Its becoming painfully obvious in this years playoffs (and numerous before) that the core money should be spent on a large backend + goaltening instead of up front.

Muzzin Hamilton
Ekholm Brodie
Oleksiak Bogo

Campbell
Vet backup

Trade rielly + holl for prospects, give dermott to the kraken, trade sandin + 1st for a long term signed ekholm.

I would be beyond thrilled to get Aho for Marner. Without salary retention, they would make my Chrismas card list.

Here is what I want from Marner:
1) An offensive player that will perform in the playoffs. We have enough defense. We had the goalie with the lowest GAA in the playoffs.
2) Preferably young and with a lot of career in front of them. As much as I'd love to have Kane, I don't think that is the right move for this team.
3) Good skater. No more Tavares players, I'm not really excited by Tkachuk either.
4) Must score goals and have a good shot. The Leafs are one of the worst shooting teams in the league.
5) How about Caufield for Marner straight up? Who says no?

Brady Tkachuk would be my #1 target. Doubt Sens would do it 1-1 for Marner though.

Failing that Nylander for Matthew Tkachuk if he will take 7x6. May have to sweeten though. Does not improve our cap situation but adds the missing ingredient to our 4 forwards and gives us a #1 LWer.

Probably because you are in the middle of what you believe.

You want to believe that some way some how these 4 get it, but watching the individuals, style of play, intensity and answers while losing, you probably know they won’t.

It needs to start with a GM change. The identity massively shifted from Lou to Dubas and the bottom fell out.
Something in the middle is needed. That exact balance the core lacks as well.
Yup sounds about right.

Do both deal and spend the saving on a heart transplant for AM......

Another year of "lessons learned". How about next season the theme is "No more lessons, time to STFU and show up!"

As for moves, since Marner can't elevate his game and show up in the playoffs, get rid of him.

I can't wait for the Marner era to begin. Clearly most here do not see what a special player we have.
My prediction is: Mitch will wind up in Seattle, Put up multiple 120 point seasons in a storied career, while winning the cup multiple times. Get his John Henry on those Leaf jerseys before he leaves folks.

You might be right. I think it will take him being dumped by his supposed childhood team to finally wake him up

The issue with the players is also that they are being told to play the way they are. It's not like management is trying them all to be tough and belligerent. They keep espousing skill over everything and ask them to play that way all season. They did not try and change it up even in game 7 because they don't know how to change it up.

I bet under a different coach that was not allergic to body contact or bigger players...the core would play better than they do. The problem is not just the players not wanting it enough...that much is obvious. It's also management's vision that makes this a mess.

While at the time I thought Lou's Rules were stupid, I have now come to appreciate what they were trying to do. Remove the individualism from the team and promote the identity of an All for one-One for All.

One of the first things Dubas did was get rid of the ceiling on player numbers. It might seem like nothing...but it was a big screw you to Lou and his ideas of team building.

I didn't agree with the clean shaven and haircuts that he implemented at the time..I thought they were over kill...but I do understand why now. Do you think Dubas understands why? I doubt it.

Everyone knows why, the question is whether they would help or hurt a team like this. Doesn't look like it did either.

You don't need to follow Lous rules to win. Many cups have been won by players wearing high numbers or having long hair.

Has AM ever won a title in anything? Just curious. I know Marner was great his last year of junior but is there any evidence that AM can elevate enough to win? Maybe he skipped through the lower levels too quickly and never got a real chance to dominate and learn how to win the big one....just guessing here.
